It is an intricate colorful design made from sandstone powder or grain-flour. Native to India, it is usually created by women or girls using bare fingers or a brush. Typically the Rangoli is made in a circular fashion, starting with a seed pattern upon which it then builds. See the sample Rangoli design above. Create your own symmetrical design. 1. Use sand mixed with paint or food coloring; chalk, or colored rice powder. Draw your design, then layer colored sand or rice powder on top of it. 2. Compare this art form to the sand paintings of the Navajo. Compare Rangoli designs with those in Islamic Art. Can you find similiarities in any other cultures? 3. The U.S. army faced various problems, including too few troops, a shortage of supplies, and unfamiliarity with frontier warfare. • In 1867 the U.S. government signed three different treaties with five Native American groups: Kiowa, Comanche, Plains Apache, Arapaho, and Cheyenne. Under the Treaty of Medicine Lodge Creek, the Native Americans would move onto reservations in Indian Territory, and the U.S. government would provide supplies and land for the reservations. • In 1869 President Ulysses S. Grant implemented a new policy of improving relations with Native Americans. He removed corrupt federal agents from reservations and placed church groups and missionaries in charge of reservations. • However, some Native Americans refused to move onto reservations. The U.S. government did not prevent soldiers from entering reservations and did not prosecute outlaws who stole Native American goods or sold liquor on the reservations. In the end, the Treaty of Medicine Lodge Creek failed to stop conflict. Lesson 2: The West Texas Wars • In 1871 U.S. General William Tecumseh Sherman traveled west to investigate reports of Native American attacks. On May 18, 1871, Native Americans entered Texas and attacked a wagon train in what became known as the Warren Wagon Train Raid. • The raid convinced General Sherman that the peace policy had not worked. Sherman ordered U.S. troops to pursue any Native Americans not living on reservations and to destroy their camps.

    AMERICANAm HERITAGE DAY DEAR PARENTS, Each year the elementary school students at Valley Christian Academy prepare a speech depicting the life of a great American man or woman. The speech is written in the first person and should include the character’s birth, death, and major accomplishments. Parents should feel free to help their children write these speeches. A good way to write the speech is to find a child’s biography and follow the story line as you construct the speech. This will make for a more interesting speech rather than a mere recitation of facts from the encyclopedia. Students will be awarded extra points for including spiritual application in their speeches. Please adhere to the following time limits. K-1 Speeches must be 1-3 minutes in length with a minimum of 175 words. 2-3 Speeches must be 2-5 minutes in length with a minimum of 350 words. 4-6 Speeches must be 3-10 minutes in length with a minimum of 525 words. Students will give their speeches in class. They should be sure to have their speeches memorized well enough so they do not need any prompts. Please be aware that students who need frequent prompting will receive a low grade. Also, any student with a speech that doesn’t meet the minimum requirement will receive a “D” or “F.” Students must portray a different character each year. One of the goals of this assignment is to help our children learn about different men and women who have made America great. A friendship forged from respect, mutual interests, and a shared sense of the importance of preserving the historical record, led author J. Evetts Haley and the trailblazing Goodnight to sit down inside of this house and record the stories of events that quite literally changed Texas. In 1925 the occupant of this prairie home, Charles Goodnight, was visited by a young collegiate historian from West Texas State Normal College in Canyon. J. Evetts Haley had been dispatched by his employer, the Panhandle Plains Historical Society, to secure an interview with the “Colonel.” This visit marked the beginning of a relationship that would impact the lives of both men. The story of those two kindred spirits has been best told by author B. Byron Price. He presented the Haley- Goodnight story in a book published in 1886 by the Nita Stewart Haley Memorial Library entitled Crafting a Southwestern Masterpiece: J. Evetts Haley and Charles Goodnight: Cowman and Plainsman. Price began the story of the friendship this way: On a hot summer afternoon in June 1925, a second-hand Model T rumbled down a short country lane in the Texas Panhandle. Pulling to a dusty stop beside an unpretentious white frame ranch house, an aspiring young historian unfolded his lean frame from behind the wheel and ambled to the door, unannounced.

This was a modification and reduction of a reservation established by a treaty of Oct. 18, 1865 (Stat. L xiv 717) with the Comanche and Kiowa. In 1868 A. G. Boone, Special Agent to the Kiowas and Comanches, and Pvt. Maj. Gen. W. B. Hazen were sent to Indian Territory to bring together the Kiowas, Comanches, and Apaches who wished to abide by their treaty commitments. Progress was made and the following year Boone’s successor, Laurie Tatum, arrived at agency headquarters near Fort Sill.
