During this action-packed show, the Youth Olympic cauldron will be lit by a young athlete and the world will be welcomed to the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020. Many future Olympians may start their career right here in Lausanne – the Olympic Capital and home of the Olympic Spirit. The Opening Ceremony will allow the audience to follow the Olympic Spirit on a fantastic and poetic journey across the different phases of an athlete’s growth. Similarly, this development of an athlete’s career applies to youth in general. The Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 have put the youth at the heart of the project, offering them a platform to get engaged, develop their skills and gain experiences. The Lausanne 2020 Opening Ceremony takes place at the Lausanne Vaudoise Arena, host of the ice hockey competitions, and brings together athletes competing in seven of the eight competition sites of Lausanne 2020. The athletes competing in St. Moritz (bobsleigh, luge, skeleton and speed skating competitions) are also participating in the ceremony and will be broadcast live from St. Mortiz. THE VENUE The Lausanne Vaudoise Arena is a brand-new stadium which was already scheduled to be built and its development was accelerated thanks to the organisation of the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games. It was inaugurated in September 2019 and is the home of the Swiss National League first division ice hockey team Lausanne Hockey Club. The Lausanne Vaudoise Arena will also host matches of the upcoming 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship next May. SUMMARY 3 THE SETTING The creative concept of the Opening Ceremony is known as “Home”. “Home” is a place that you consider yours, where you feel good and at ease, and a place where you are happy to invite people - as you would to a mountain chalet. Lausanne is the home of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and regarded as the home of international sport. Through the Opening Ceremony, we would like to welcome the world of sport “home”. The staging concept represents a set of individual chalets scattered throughout the arena in a decentralised manner which make up part of the bigger scenery. The chalet – or cabin – is a place to come together with family and friends, a place to rest before or after intensive training, a shelter from the cold and the snow, a place to nourish the body and the mind - and sometimes a home away from home. The chalet is part of life for many winter athletes around the world, but it is also strongly rooted in Swiss culture. It is a traditional and typical symbol of warmth, nourishment and friendliness as well as a testimonial to Swiss expertise in architecture and sustainability. THE STORY Youth Olympic Games athletes are connected to each other through the common Olympic Spirit that they share. This spirit will always be present in their careers and nourishes their commitment to excellence, friendship and respect as well as an expression of their determination, inspiration and courage. The Opening Ceremony takes the audience on a journey through seven short stories interpreting the different phases of an athlete’s growth. Present from the start of a young athlete’s career in the form of a strong and meaningful legacy (Story 1: Olympic Capital Legacy), the Olympic Spirit accompanies young athletes in their first steps in their chosen discipline(Story 2: Where it all starts) and later in the long development of their skills and education (Story 3: Education: Sports and Culture). When the foundation is laid, the Olympic Spirit supports the development of the athlete’s personality and style leading them to do things in a different, individual and innovative way (Story 4: Innovation: Doing it in a different way). Having reached an empowering freedom of expression, the athletes can now spread and share the Olympic Spirit within the community and beyond (Story 5: Sports to the City). The Olympic Spirit is still there when the athletes continue growing sustainably through proper balance of body and mind (Story 6: Body and Mind). The Olympic Spirit finally transforms any individual performance into a collective story – and the Olympic community ensures that the spirit lives on for the next generations (Story 7: Cooperation and Co-Creation) from the very beginning of a young athlete’s career. Similarly, this development of an athlete’s career applies to youth in general. Youth, especially local youth, are at the heart of Lausanne 2020, and are being offered an active role in all stages of the Winter Youth Olympic Games. “START NOW”: THE MOTTO OF THE 3RD WINTER YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES “Start now” is the motto of Lausanne 2020. Not exactly a slogan but a call to action. For the athletes, the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 can be the start of a new life, of a career on or off the field of play. It can be the start of new friendships, new ambitions and Olympic passion. For the young people watching and enjoying Lausanne 2020, the event can be the start of new inspiration as they discover the unique spirit of the Olympic Games and its values for the first time. “Start now” also speaks to older audiences, representing not only the start of a new Winter Youth Olympic Games era in Lausanne, but also the emergence of new talent and a new Switzerland – a nation which is empowered by hosting this event. “Start now” is also the name of the Games’ official song, which will be played during the Opening Ceremony. 4 18:00 Door opening 20:46 Olympic Anthem and raising of the Olympic flag 19:30 Start of the Opening Ceremony 20:50 Torch Relay: Part II 19:33 Athletes’ parade + live broadcast St. Moritz 20:51 Story 5 – Sports to the City START BROADCAST 20:55 Lausanne 2020 President and IOC President’s speeches / Opening of the Games 20:00 Story 1 – Olympic Capital Legacy 21:03 Torch Relay: Part III 20:03 Welcome Head of State and IOC President 21:05 Athletes’, Judges’ and Coaches’ Oath 20:05 Parade of NOC flags 21:08 Story 6 – Body and Mind 20:15 Torch Relay: Part I 21:12 Torch Relay: Final part and lighting of the Youth Olympic Cauldron 20:17 Story 2 – Where it all starts 21:16 Story 7 – Cooperation and Co-Creation 20:26 Playing of the National Anthem and raising of the Swiss flag 21:22 End of Broadcast 20:29 Story 3 – Education: Sports and Culture 21:30 End of Opening Ceremony 20:37 Story 4 – Innovation: Doing it in a different way RUNDOWN OVERVIEW 5 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS The Organising Committee of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 believes in doing things differently including focusing on innovation; creating an inspiring lega- cy; challenging the old and building the new; and involving young local players before, during and after the Games.
