On imdb.com, there's a description for an unreleased Danforth film from 1985 that sounds fascinating called Zoo Ship... "A spaceship carrying specimens from all over the universe--a sort of alien Noah's Ark crash-lands on Earth." Does anyone have information on this film? Regarding David Allen, I understand that he was working on his project, The Primevals at the time of his death. Is there a chance that someone will pick up the torch and finally complete the film? It just seems criminal to me that some spectacular stop-motion footage from these greats may never see the light of day. It would be nice to see a DVD anthology of their unfinished films. Check out Criterian's EQUINOX disk for a rare Allen short subject. georgechastain (11/8/06 7:43 am) Re: The Incomplete Works of Jim Danforth and David Allen -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I recently discovered that Jim Danforth was working on his own recreation of the lost spider pit scene from KONG long before Peter Jackson tackled it. Yet another in a long series of fabulous unrealized projects Danforth has labored on over the years. Issue #5 of SPFX magazine has a terrific article about Danforth's career with tantalizing details about many of those projects, including lots of illustrations and color photos. I'd LOVE see a DVD collecting the existing footage from all or many of these "lost films" someday. It's not a strict tretise on FX and stop-motion, thank goodness, but a far broader canvas. It sounds neat. As for PRIMEVALS... (sigh). There are still some 30 or 50 FX shots to do, including most of the elaborate climax. The actors (including Robert Cornthwaite in a prime character rle) were apparently never paid for their work (in Romania); the sound elements may still be missing, or at the very least tied up by unpaid lab & storage bills. The long relationship betwee Dave and Charlie Band was more than occasionally strained, but Charlie never gave up on trying to finish the movie. Any time there was spare dough, he'd funnell it over to Dave and his mate Chris Endicott so they could keep working, albeit slowly and between other assignments. Even after Dave's death, no one truly gave up. I was at the funeral, and Charlie was devastated. Dave was a really good guy. Unfortunatly, PRIMEVALS probably isn't cost-effective when it comes to pouring more money into it, not in today's market. If the film really isn't cost-effective to finish, then I wish Band would find a way to release Allen's footage as is somehow, even if it's just as a DVD extra on an unrelated title. It's strange how Danforth and Allen's careers somewhat parallel Willis O'Brien's, with so many promising projects never coming to fruition. Makes you wonder what would have happened to Harryhausen without his association with Schneer. Harryhausen has said, on more than one occasion, what a great thing it was to have become involved with a producer who realized the potential of stop-motion. I've only seen blurry photos in some magazines and caught brief glimpses of the figure on television and I would love the chance to have a real good look at the Monster Maker's take on THE Monster. I wanted to use and build on everything I learned at RIT, entertain both young and old audiences, and support my belief that shooting mediums should be a choice tailored to fit the needs and purposes of a character in a film. Popular trends in animation and visual effects sometimes overshadow the fact that technological advancements benefit more than just computer-generated graphics. Convincing stop-motion characters (and characters of other mediums) can benefit from these same advancements, and even coexist with multiple other styles within the same frame. My film is framed in a situation familiar to nearly everyone. It uses three major characters to tell its story, each of which is photographed separately using different filmmaking techniques. I have a real boy shot on HD video, a mashed potato monster brought to life with stop-motion animation, and a television super-hero created using computer-generated images.

    American Society of Cinematographers Historical Timeline DRAFT 8/31/2018 Compiled by David E. Williams February, 1913 — The Cinema Camera Club of New York and the Static Camera Club of America in Hollywood are organized. Each consists of cinematographers who shared ideas about advancing the art and craft of moviemaking. By 1916, the two organizations exchange membership reciprocity. They both disband in February of 1918, after five years of struggle. January 8, 1919 — The American Society of Cinematographers is chartered by the state of California. Founded by 15 members, it is dedicated to “advancing the art through artistry and technological progress … to help perpetuate what has become the most important medium the world has known.” Members of the ASC subsequently play a seminal role in virtually every technological advance that has affects the art of telling stories with moving images. June 20, 1920 — The first documented appearance of the “ASC” credential for a cinematographer in a theatrical film’s titles is the silent western Sand, produced by and starring William S. Hart and shot by Joe August, ASC. November 1, 1920 — The first issue of American Cinematographer magazine is published. Volume One, #1, consists of four pages and mostly reports news and assignments of ASC members. It is published twice monthly. 1922 — Guided by ASC members, Kodak introduced panchromatic film, which “sees” all of the colors of the rainbow, and recorded images’ subtly nuanced shades of gray, ranging from the darkest black to the purest white. The Headless Horseman is the first motion picture shot with the new negative. The cinematographer is Ned Van Buren, ASC.

Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

    UNCERTAIN GLORY (The other Casablanca) For THOMAS McNULTY- in appreciation and gratitude* Uncertain Glory is the 29th in the celluloid career of Errol Flynn. The only film of Flynn’s released for the year 1944 falling between Northern Pursuit and Objective Burma. The first of a series of seven films (ultimately amended to three) to be made by Flynn’s company, Thomson Productions, which was contracted to Warners both for use of facilities and release arrange-ments. It has the distinction of being the 5th of 8 films in which Flynn would die, along with Charge of the Light Brigade, Dawn Patrol, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, They Died With Their Boots On, Rocky Mountain, Too Much Too Soon, and The Roots of Heaven). And also the 4th of 5 dealing with the subject of World War 2- the others being Desperate Journey, Edge of Darkness, Northern Pursuit, and Objective Burma. It’s Flynn’s first important film post-trial. He’s in mid-career, and about 33 years old. He is vulnerable and changed. And the performance shows it- someone in transition, from a boyish attitude toward life into a man’s more serious focus (remember we’re speaking about Flynn: he still had his extra-curricular activities- only less of them). At about this time he was paying alimony and support, married**, LIVING WITH Nora, a father, working on the novel Showdown (writing always having a calming effect), and a recently successful USO and bond tour (meaning public acceptance). He chose this film as his next project, and it DID NOT capitalize on (although there are the usual references to a young man in search of feminine company) the rape trial (the ordeal actually started on 10/11/42 with 2 policemen coming to the house and culminated in an acquittal on 2/6/43) by suggesting the new image he would ultimately be saddled with.

    The Birth of Haptic Cinema An Interactive Qualifying Project Submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science by Panhavuth Lau Jordan Stoessel Date: May 21, 2020 Advisor: Brian Moriarty IMGD Professor of Practice Abstract This project examines the history of The Tingler (1959), the first motion picture to incorporate haptic (tactile) sensations. It surveys the career of its director, William Castle, a legendary Hollywood huckster famous for his use of gimmicks to attract audiences to his low- budget horror films. Our particular focus is Percepto!, the simple but effective gimmick created for The Tingler to deliver physical “shocks” to viewers. The operation, deployment and promotion of Percepto! are explored in detail, based on recently-discovered documents provided to exhibitors by Columbia Pictures, the film’s distributor.
