The Republic of Cuba has approximately 610,000 telephone access lines of which 210,000 are in La Habana Metropolitan Area. The telephone switching equipment is a combination of crossbar, step-by-step and only a small digital switch (1,200 access lines) serving the International Airport in La Habana, until ETECSA1 installed a few more digital switching systems and a fiber ring in La Habana since 1998. The fiber ring is used to supplement the data carrying capabilities of the existing network. Long distance service is provided by a combination of crossbar switching systems and cord boards. Cuba has access to the International Direct Dial Plan for most countries. Direct distance dial within the island is made possible by a crossbar toll tandem network.

LUCERO: Engendering Inequality: Masculinity and Racial Exclusion in Cuba, 1895-1902 (Under the direction of Dr. Louis A. Pérez, Jr.) This dissertation explains the rise of a culture of racial silence in a time of heightening racial exclusion in Cuba at the turn of the twentieth century. Employing a case study of Cienfuegos, a port city on the south-central coast of the island, I examine gendered articulations of inequality among Cuban separatists between the outbreak of the war of independence in 1895 and the inauguration of the Cuban republic in 1902. I argue that Cuban struggles for political power in the wake of the American military intervention (1898) and military occupation (1899-1902) fundamentally transformed separatist visions of citizenship, increasingly restricting its boundaries along racial lines. Separatists expressed racial exclusion in terms of masculinity. During the first years of the war, a discourse of racial brotherhood afforded inclusion to all men regardless of race or class. There were two key turning points thereafter. When Cubans entered the final year of the anticolonial struggle and especially after the American intervention, diverse groups of separatists struggled to secure access to political power.

© Lonely Planet Publications 291 Sancti Spíritus Province Sancti Spíritus is the province of good fortune. Spend a day trekking through its rolling Jatibonico hills or crested Sierra del Escambray and you’ll quickly discover that there’s more of everything here, and all of it squeezed into an area half the size of Camagüey or Pinar del Río. The cities are a perennial highlight. Sancti Spíritus is the only province that hosts two of Cuba’s seven founding settlements: in the east is the understated provincial capital, a soporific mix of weather-beaten buildings and bruised Ladas. South, and within sight of the coast, is ethereal Trinidad, Cuba’s – and Latin America’s – colonial jewel that is second only to Havana as a tourist magnet. Unlike other colonial belles, Trinidad has beaches – nearby Ancón is a stunner, easily the best on Cuba’s southern coast – and mountains. Within mirror-glinting distance of the city’s SANCTI SPÍRITUS colonial core lie the haunting Escambray, Cuba’s best hiking area with an actual network of decent trails, a couple of which can be done – officially – without a guide! PROVINCE Sandwiched in between is the once-formidable Valle de los Ingenios, the industrial heart- land upon which Trinidad’s fortunes were once laid out in sugar. But, while the valley’s economic riches depleted, its tourist value sky-rocketed; it’s now a Unesco World Heritage Site and best explored on a steam train. The rest of the province hides a surprisingly varied cache of oft-overlooked curiosities. There’s a great fishing lake at Zaza, a seminal museum to Cuba’s guerrilla icon Camilo Cien- fuegos in Yaguajay, and a barely visited Unesco Biosphere Reserve in the beautiful Bahía de Buenavista.
