Having traveled and represented CAFS at the Annual Conference in the US, these visionaries thought that members would rather attend a day long conference close to home as opposed to traveling to Seattle for a four day event. The local Conference drew enough attendance to break even, but there was still the criticism that this event was not up to the standards of the high profile experience in Seattle. Despite the tight budget, this was a good fundraiser for CAFS and worth the effort to continue. Through hard work and perseverance, the event became so popular it was extended to a two day event that was held for almost 20 years. The Maintenance Conference Committee always seemed to attract the movers and shakers from the industry; people that as an individual you would never be able to hear in person, let alone ask questions of. Subjects covered ranged from Engines, Fuels and Lubricants, Brake systems, transmissions and Drive lines, and subject material that was current and forward thinking (topics that were happening in the industry during that time period). The Maintenance Conference was dropped in the mid 1990’s in favor of a series of technical seminars which later developed into the CAFS training courses that are available today. One of CAFS longest standing members, Wayne Jardine / W..D.J Mobile Fleet, has been a member for over 50 years! The BC Truck Rodeao The idea of a BC Truck Roadeo was conceived in Canada in 1949 by the Vancouver Safety Council who had witnessed a similar US event. Initially it was a small one day event and attracted very little attention. Again the visionaries of the time persevered and in 1953, the location of the BC Truck Roadeo was moved to the Simpson Sears’s parking lot on Kingsway in Burnaby. This became “officially” know as the first Annual BC Truck Roadeo. In 1983, our B.C. Truck Roadeo, grew from a one day several hour event at Sears in Burnaby (now called Metrotown), to a four day event that composed of the Roadeo, displays, entertainment a beauty queen (Continued on page 12) September 2018 10 11 Canadian Association of Fleet Supervisors 70th ANNIVERSARY FUN FACTS (Continued from page 10) contest. (Our own Past President, Peg Macmillan took part!) and an awards banquet. The BC Truck Roadeo became such a popular event that it had to change the name to 'The British Columbia Professional Truck Driving Championships' because the Canadian Trucking Association, which ran the national event, wanted a unified appearance thought the provinces. One of the highlights of our endeavours was Mr. Denny Kohn of Shell Oil, who went on to represent Canada in the World Truck Driving Championships in Paris, France. Due to popularity and growth, we soon ran out of areas that CAFS own Royalty! could be used for this event. The location at this time was Our 1st and only female the Boundary Bay airport, it was great but now its time here president to date, was coming to a close - apparently somebody actually Peg Macmillan 1993-1995 wanted to fly airplanes there! The Roadeo had seen many location moves over the years; Oakridge Shopping Center, Richmond Mall, Domans Marpole Transport, Boundary Bay Airport, the Cloverdale fair grounds and is currently held at Tradex in Abbotsford. Then in the early nineties CAFS board decided that they could no longer manage and finance such an endeavor and the event was turned over to the BC Trucking Association (BCTA), who was better suited to hosting such a prestigious occasion.
