It has not been submitted in any previous application for a degree. Signed: (Setriakor Dzivenu) Date: 2 Abstract This thesis examines the role of chiefs and chieftaincy in Ghana’s Fourth Republic. It focuses on the interactions between chieftaincy, the state apparatus and society in areas of local government, land administration and democratic politics, using Hohoe and Kumasi as case studies. The central objective is to explore the legitimation processes of chiefs and chieftaincy, especially how chiefs in both areas seek to assert authority with respect to the state and society. By taking a closer look at how chiefs negotiate the modern political order, this research takes a position between those who see chieftaincy as an indigenous institution deserving recognition and protection, and those who view it as incompatible with the modern political dispensation. The research describes how a network of legal and informal strategies has influenced the ways in which state and chiefs interact. By focusing on this interaction, the thesis also reveals the on‐going legitimation processes at the local and national levels in Ghana with respect to chiefs and chieftaincy. The thesis reveals that even though both state actors and chiefs want, and are constitutionally obliged, to exercise political control in certain distinct ways, the reality is that neither is able to do so completely. To remain relevant, both the state and chieftaincy asserted a hybrid authority in their relation with society, thereby blurring the boundaries between their primary identities. Thus rather than establishing a ‘bifurcated state’, these processes revealed a ‘syncretic’ authority relations overlapping in ways that blend political norms, processes and rules associated with each. Kissiedu ABSTRACT This studio-based research improvises on the architectonics of Kumasi kiosks. I present the ensuing body of artefacts as a working prototype which joins on-going cultural conversations on hybridity in contemporary art. The typical Kumasi kiosk is referenced as a site for negotiation of boundaries in its design, setting and function, but I have also made allusions to suggestions of hybridity and boundary negotiation in the polyvalent structure of Asante myth and folklore. I made a close study of three hundred kiosks located in the urban quarters of Kumasi. I also engaged such thinkers on hybrid spaces as Homi Bhabha , Jacques Derrida, Michael Foucault, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, etc, to discourse on Asante mythology. I laid emphasis on the myth of ɔhyeεni (ɔhene-king), a patriarchal figure who negotiates boundaries, Asante and Akan filial kinship narrative from Asante history.

THE MACONDE AND THE SHETANI Advisor: Dr. Mustafah Dhada Thesis dated December, 2000 This thesis examines to what extent the shetani icon in Maconde Art has been elevated to the status of deity; and what powers it has been endowed with to transform the lives of its "worshippers." The investigation was based on the observation that, although not a recognized 'god' in the traditional Maconde form of worship, nor that of Mozambique, the shetani’s appearance in Mozambican art was consistent and abundant. The investigative approach used was a comparative analysis of three internationally known Mozambican artists, two of which are Maconde. The researcher found that with all three artists, the shetani was an obvious element in their artistic renderings and in each instance, their individual lives, though not unique, were charged with suffering and unhappiness. The conclusion drawn from this investigation suggests that, although created by a Maconde for the purpose of patronage, the shetani icon has become a 'deity' not only for the Maconde, but for Mozambicans, as well. While not 'worshipped' in the sense that Westerners worship, it has been endowed with powers that transform the lives of those who identify with it. At the very least, it has been endowed with the power to promote their artistic abilities with a view to catalyzing greater creativity. Louise Müller Wijsheidsweb, 26 november 2019 This briefing outlines a Ph.D. project to find indigenous religious reasons of why — unlike in other African countries — the traditional political institution (known as ‘chieftaincy’) among the Asante in Ghana has not been dismantled. Whereas previous researches have focused on legal, economic and political reasons for the persistence of chieftaincy among this cultural group, this doctoral research focuses on the native belief or (in jargon) ‘Indigenous Religion’ of tribal heads (in jargon) ‘Traditional Authorities’ as a possible explanatory factor[0] . Key Points The Asante are a prominent cultural group in Ghana that belongs to the Akan, which is the umbrella name of cultural groups in Ghana, Togo and Côte d’Ivoire. The Asante are practitioners of Indigenous Religion, which legitimises the institution of chieftaincy. Since the foundation of the Asante Kingdom in 1701 their Traditional Authorities fulfil the indigenous religious functions of: Mediators with the spiritual beings, from which they receive the sacred power to rule by occupying a “stool” (throne), and B. Peacekeepers between Islamic and Christian religious communities in the Asante Region by incorporating aspects of Islam and Christianity into their Indigenous Religion. The outcome of this doctoral research is that there is a positive correlation between the persistence of chieftaincy among the Asante and the continuation of indigenous religious mediation and peacekeeping of their traditional authorities.     THE THREE AKYEM: A COMMUNITY PARK FOR THE TOWN OF AKYEM ODA, GHANA by ALEXANDER NAGEL (Under the Direction of Pratt Cassity) ABSTRACT This thesis presents a program and design for a new community park for Akyem Oda, a small town in the rain forest region of Ghana. The town was visited two times in 2004 and 2005 as part of the ongoing yearly Summer Service-Learning Studio during which time a site inventory was performed. Background research for the program development included geography and history of Ghana with a special focus on the Asante kingdom, traditional building techniques, land planning and an exploration of Akyem history in relationship to the dominant kingdom of Asante. A photo documentation of the main features of Akyem Oda and their spatial relationships to each other completes the research part of this thesis. The program for the proposed ‘Three Akyem Community Park’ integrates a Parade Ground, a Cultural Center and three Groves representing each of the three Akyem people on the 8.9 acres rectilinear site.     ARTICLES THE GOLDEN STOOL AND THE OATHS TO THE KING OF ASHANTI by George P. Hagan* My aim in this paper is to present an interpretation of Ashanti kingship in the light of two other political institutions in Ashanti; and it is in two parts. The first part is an attempt to interpret the functions of the King of Ashanti in the light of the symbolic significance of the Golden Stool. And the second part is an attempt at a structural analysis of the institution of oaths. The two parts of the paper, or the two themes, are related: while it is the Golden Stool which gives ritual and, therefore, ultimate validation to the authority oS the King of Ashanti, it is through oaths that the prerogative of the king to command the obedience of his subjects - which is the substance of real authority - is given the force of personal commitment by his subjects, from below. It is the Golden Stool^ and the Oaths which make the king 'the hub of Ashanti political system.' The significance of the Golden Stool - the Attribute of Divinity The symbol of political authority in Ashanti is the Stool. Every political unit in Ashanti - division, vicinage, village or lineage - has a stool which is the symbol of the authority of its leadership. All such stools, needless to say, are parochial symbols which focus attention and sentiment on segmental identities and factional interests. The Golden Stool is the sole exception to this. As the symbol which stands for the widest expanse of political authority (and all other stools fall under it), the Golden Stool enshrines the common fundpmental values which all the segments of the nation fcspouse and cherish.
