By 1970, he had joined the Sports Car Club of B.C. and started volunteering at the track. In 1974, while studying for a degree in zoology at U.B.C., he took the Westwood Driver's Training course and began his racing career. He started racing a Mini Cooper S in the Sedan class. This car was so well prepared that it was used in car shows to promote the track. In 1976, he built another Mini, which he used for two seasons of ice racing in Ashcroft. He then bought a fully race-prepared Ford Pinto which, at that time, held the track record in its class at Westwood. A few years later, the classes changed and the Pinto was no longer competitive with its four-cylinder engine, so a V8 was prepared and dropped into the small car. It was a handful on the track, but it got Dennis several wins and a Super Production class championship. A car show standout, the Pinto was used to promote sports car racing at Westwood. Dennis was asked to become the pace car/ rescue car driver at Westwood in 1984, a job he also did at several Molson Indy races in Vancouver, and still does at Mission Raceway Park today Dennis finished his bachelor's degree in science, and then did his fifth year in education to become a certified teacher. He taught for thirty-five years in Vancouver, at Windermere and Killarney Secondary Schools. In 1992, Dennis and a group of seven other high school teachers started the B.C. Secondary School Motorsport Association (BCSSMA). The group promoted interest in motorsport (the students were taken to car shows and monster truck shows) and safe racing. They started the high school drag racing program (the first car they built was a 1975 Camaro), which is still in operation today. Dennis served as vice-president of the association for five years. Meanwhile, Dennis was still competing in sports car racing and running a 1937 Ford in the Hot Rod class at Mission Raceway. He was Hot Rod class champion in 1992, 1993 and 2003. In 2003, he got a 1989 Camaro for sports car racing and won several class championships. Unfortunately, the car was destroyed in an accident during the 2009 season. Soon after the accident, he built a 1974 Camaro for Vintage Sports Car racing. This is the car he is currently running. He was vice-president of the Vintage Racing Club of B.C. for several years, and is currently the group's race chairman. The Sports Car Club of B.C. voted him a Life Member in 2012, and further honoured him in 2013 with the Randall Award for outstanding long time club service. Dennis has retired from teaching, but between racing his vintage Camaro, driving the Mission track pace car and serving as the Vintage Club race chairman, Dennis finds himself "very busy, in a pleasant way." http://www.indycar.com/News/2015/10/10-27-INDYCAR-announces-16-race-Verizon-IndyCar-Series- schedule-for-2016 INDYCAR Announces 16 race schedule for 2016 New events, extended season highlight 2016 By IndyCar.com staff | Published: Oct 27, 2015 The 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule -- a 16-race season anchored by the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race – spans five weeks longer than last season and features new events in Phoenix, Road America and Boston. INDYCAR has experienced a 38 percent growth in both television ratings and viewership over the past two years with longstanding TV partners ABC and NBCSN and the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season is poised to capitalize and build upon that momentum. The most diverse schedule in motorsports features five races on oval tracks, five on permanent road courses and six on temporary street circuits. “Overall, the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule is another key step forward in INDYCAR’s strategic vision,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, the parent of INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We’re confident that the momentum that INDYCAR has experienced in fan engagement over the past two seasons will continue as a result of the tireless efforts of our event promoters and our improved scheduling on ABC and NBCSN.” The schedule opens March 13 on the streets of St.
