AV-1, FIII-6 ! AV-3) (1), has been iso- 1 lated from leaves of Oxalis triangularis A. St.-Hil. In the 1D H NMR spectrum of 1 dissolved in CD3OD–CF3CO2D (95:5), MTFA, recorded 45 min after sample preparation, this covalently linked dimer occurred mainly as flavylium cation (38%) and two equilibrium forms assigned to be quinonoidal bases (54%), whereas only minor amounts of the hemiacetal forms were present. After five days storage at 300 K, the hemiacetals (39%) and flavylium cation (38%) constituted the main forms of 1. More simple anthocyanins are normally considered to be on the flavylium cation form in acidified deuterated methanol. The cross-peaks observed in NOESY NMR spectra of 1 indicated the presence of vertical ’p–p’ stacking between the B-ring of the flavone unit and the A-ring of each of the two forms assigned to be quinonoidal bases. It was not possible to discriminate between inter- or intramolecular association mechanisms. The equi- libria between the various forms of 1 were studied by two-dimensional NOESY and ROESY NMR spectroscopy. 2D HSQC-TOCSY NMR spectroscopy was among the methods used for characterization of the various forms. Spread of Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) in a heavily infested citrus area in Southern Valencia (Spain) has been monitored since 1981. Two adjacent plots with 400 trees each were selected and tested yearly by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). One of them was planted to 4-yr-old Newhall navel orange on Troyer citrange and the other to 8-yr-old Marsh seedless grapefruit on the same rootstock. Both had been established using virus-free budwood. In 1981, 98.7% of the Newhall navel plants indexed CTV-positive and by 1984 all of them were infected, whereas only 17.8% of the Marsh grapefruit indexed CTV-positive in 1981, and 42.5% were infected in 1986. This is an indication that grapefruit is less susceptible than navel orange to tristeza infection under the Spanish field conditions. Wild plants of 66 species collected in the same heavily tristeza-infested area were also tested by ELISA to find a possible alternate non-citrus host. Reproduction is both sexual (with pollination mostly by bees), and asexual (by way of runners). The species is widely distributed in the United States but is rare in New England. Oxalis violacea is an obligate outcrosser: the species is distylous, meaning that there are two flower morphs (pin and thrum), with a given plant producing one morph, not both. Pin flowers are more common than thrum flowers. In New England, the habitat varies from dry to moist, and for populations to remain vigorous forest canopies must remain partially open. Fire benefits this species, in part by removing competitors. Human consumption of the leaves has been reported. Oxalis violacea has a Global Status Rank of G5, indicating that it is demonstrably widespread, abundant and secure. In Massachusetts, it is ranked as Threatened; five occurrences are current (in four towns among three counties) and 10 are historic. In Connecticut, it is listed as a species of Special Concern; 10 occurrences are current (in ten towns among six counties) and 19 are historic.

Habitat: Coastal dunes, scrub, grasslands, oak woodlands, gardens, turf, urban areas, orchards, vineyards and agricultural fields. Grows in most environments and can tolerate many soil types. Grows in full sun in cool coastal areas, but inland it grows primarily in semi-shaded sites. Origin: Native to South Africa and brought to North America as a garden ornamental. Impacts: Buttercup oxalis is a major problem in field-grown flowers and in the home landscape, especially in groundcovers. In the last 10 years, this plant has spread extensively throughout California invading native coastal dunes and natural areas along the coast. The list includes a number of 33 invasive neophytes, most of them native in North America and Asia. The harmful character of these species was discussed, related to their effect on the biodiversity and economical quality of the invaded grasslands. A large variation in the number of invasive neophytes in the analyzed grasslands have been registered, depending of the grassland type. The grasslands with the highest number of invasive neophytes were those from the orders Potentillo-Polygonetalia and Arrhenatheretalia, which are usually stronger disturbed by anthropogenic or natural factors. The less disturbed grasslands (from the orders Nardetalia and Caricetalia curvulae) were either invaded by a low number of neophytes or entirely free of neophytes.
