Overseas Expert Column by Bill Esdaile The first G1 of the day, the 1,200m British Champions Sprint Stakes, is one race trainer Sir Michael Stoute has failed to win in his glittering career, but he’ll be very hopeful of doing so this year. The legendary handler saddles DREAM OF DREAMS who based on his two most recent performances looks the one to beat. The son of DREAM AHEAD began his 2020 campaign with a very close second in the G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes over 1,200m at Royal Ascot and followed that up with an impressive seven-length victory in the G2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury over 1,400m. The 6YO has since won Haydock’s G1 Sprint Cup Stakes over 1,200m and although he was disappointing in this race 12 months ago, he looks to have found a new lease of life this season. Like DREAM OF DREAMS, ONE MASTER comes into this contest on the back of a G1 success. William Haggas’ mare was last seen when winning the 1,400m Prix de la Foret at ParisLongchamp – a record third victory in the race. She’s enjoyed another good campaign with a G3 win at Goodwood over 1,400m her other success. She loves soft ground and was second in this race last year, but her best performances have come over 200m further. CAPE BYRON hasn’t been seen since finishing down the field in this contest last year. That was a rare below par performance at Ascot given he’d won his last two at the Berkshire track. The long absence shouldn’t be seen as a negative as he has a good record fresh and Roger Varian’s runner is an interesting contender at a double-figure price. Aidan O’Brien’s last win in this race came in 1998 and he relies on LOPE Y FERNANDEZ. The 3YO hasn’t won since August 2019 but he has plenty of solid form, including a runner-up finish in the G1 Prix Jean Prat over 1,400m earlier this season. Kieren Fallon rode CRYSTAL CASTLE to victory in 2002 and his son, Cieren, will be hoping to follow suit aboard OXTED. The 4YO has enjoyed a fantastic season with two victories, firstly in the G3 Abernant Stakes and then in the G1 July Cup (both 1,200m). The son of MAYSON is clearly on the upgrade and deserves his place in the line-up, although this will almost certainly be the softest ground he’s ever encountered. ART POWER bounced back from a no-show in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes over 1,000m when fourth behind DREAM OF DREAMS in the aforementioned G1 Sprint Cup Stakes. That was a step in the right direction, but he still has plenty to prove here. The placings can be completed by BRANDO who looks set to get his preferred underfoot conditions. The old stager hasn’t tasted success for over a year now but has run well in a number of races since, including in this contest 12 months ago. He was a respectable third in the G3 Bengough Stakes over 1,200m at York last weekend and based on recent showings in this contest, he shouldn’t be dismissed despite his likely big odds.     Jockeys Profile Avdulla, Brenton Age: 28. Brenton Avdulla was a leading apprentice in Melbourne before a ‘chance’ phone call from Gai Waterhouse saw him relocate to Sydney to be indentured to her. He has remained in Sydney since and was crowned 2017/18 champion jockey. Avdulla has ridden over 100 winners in his last five seasons in Sydney striking at no less than 14.5%, contributing to his total win tally of 1,124 (as of 25 November). His first G1 win came aboard the Grahame Begg-trained Secret Admirer in the 2010 Flight Stakes at Randwick and his first Australian ‘major’ came aboard Estijaab in the G1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill. Honours: Sydney champion jockey (2017/18). Hong Kong wins (as of 25 November): 0 Badel, Alexis Age: 28. Alexis Badel hails from a racing tradition, his mother being trainer Myriam Bollack-Badel and his father, former jockey Alain Badel. He was France's Champion Apprentice in 2007 and broke into the top 10 in the premiership in just his second year riding, with 60 winners. Badel's first Group race win came aboard Norse King in the October 2013 Prix du Conseil de Paris. He was appointed as the second retained rider for The Aga Khan behind Christophe Soumillon at the beginning of the 2015 racing season and went on to record his most successful season to date with 104 wins. That saw him obtain seventh position in the French Championship. He debuted at Sha Tin with two mounts on 11 December, 2016. His first Hong Kong winner was Supreme Profit on 27 December, 2016 and he ended that maiden two-month stint with seven wins.

    THURSDAY, 19 NOVEMBER 2020 BALLYHANE STUD RELEASES 2021 FEES ETREHAM BUYS INTO Ballyhane Stud, home to five stallions, has released its fees for WONDERFUL MOON 2021, with newcomer Sands Of Mali (Fr) set to stand at i6,500. Established sires Dandy Man (Ire) and Elzaam (Aus) were both represented by Group 1 winners this year, and Dandy Man's fee will remain at i15,000, while Elzaam's has been set at i5,000. Ballyhane Sud owner Joe Foley said of his stalwart Dandy Man, "Our flagship stallion has had another stellar season with another Grade I-winning colt in River Boyne (Ire) and four stakes-winning 2-year-olds including the explosive Royal Ascot winner Dandall (Ire). His stock continue to be highly sought after in the sales ring and, with the quality of his next crops continuing to rise, his future looks very secure." He continued, "Elzaam's breakthrough Group 1 success with Champers Elysees in the Matron S. at Irish Champions Weekend was his highlight. His colts continue to be in high demand in the Far East with many more being sold to Hong Kong this year following the path of Playa Del Puente (Ire), who was so close to Wonderful Moon | racingfotos.com winning the Hong Kong Derby last spring."
