Scratches? Scribbles? Scripture! Revealing the Unseen – 3D Scanning of Glagolitic Graffiti of the 10th Century at the Monastery of St. Naum RUTH TENSCHERT, MAX RAHRIG, RAINER DREWELLO, and SEBASTIAN KEMPGEN, University of Bamberg, Germany The Monastery of Saint Naum in Macedonia is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region”. The area is unique not only for its architecture but also its outstanding linguistic heritage. The monastery was named after Saint Naum and founded at the end of the 9th century and is visited by many tourists every day. In the transition from the narthex to the central church, the visitor immediately notices two shiny white marble columns. These columns carry unique inscriptions/graffiti, which represent some of the earliest evidence of the Glagolitic alphabet, a precursor of the Cyrillic alphabet. During the project, previously unseen inscriptions were revealed on the columns. The huge number of tourists poses a danger to the historic surfaces of the columns, as the constant touching and rubbing of the inscriptions is causing deterioration. Therefore, there is an urgent need to image and archive the inscriptions. Using macrophotography with raking light did not work well as the columns’ curvature and shiny surface caused blurring in the images, and some of the graffiti were not visible. Therefore, a structured light scanner with a 3D point resolution of 30 µm or less was used to record the columns, to both preserve and reveal these unique graffiti. The recording of the surfaces was deliberately carried out without texture information to exclude errors caused by the shiny and discoloured marble of the columns. -

Nominalia of the Bulgarian rulers An essay by Ilia Curto Pelle Bulgaria is a country with a rich history, spanning over a millennium and a half. However, most Bulgarians are unaware of their origins. To be honest, the quantity of information involved can be overwhelming, but once someone becomes invested in it, he or she can witness a tale of the rise and fall, steppe khans and Christian emperors, saints and murderers of the three Bulgarian Empires. As delving deep in the history of Bulgaria would take volumes upon volumes of work, in this essay I have tried simply to create a list of all Bulgarian rulers we know about by using different sources. So, let’s get to it. Despite there being many theories for the origin of the Bulgars, the only one that can show a historical document supporting it is the Hunnic one. This document is the Nominalia of the Bulgarian khans, dating back to the 8th or 9th century, which mentions Avitohol/Attila the Hun as the first Bulgarian khan. However, it is not clear when the Bulgars first joined the Hunnic Empire. It is for this reason that all the Hunnic rulers we know about will also be included in this list as khans of the Bulgars. The rulers of the Bulgars and Bulgaria carry the titles of khan, knyaz, emir, elteber, president, and tsar. This list recognizes as rulers those people, who were either crowned as any of the above, were declared as such by the people, despite not having an official coronation, or had any possession of historical Bulgarian lands (in modern day Bulgaria, southern Romania, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and northern Greece), while being of royal descent or a part of the royal family. -

Наум Охридски:27–145.55–42 Review article A THOUGHT ON THE ETHICS OF SAINT NAUM’S MIRACULOUSNESS AND ON THE NATIONAL SPIRIT Abstract Starting from the fact that it is not enough to just get rid of evil, but that the es- sence is to get away from the evil and get the evil away, and you can only do that when you start doing good, seemly to man as a temple of God - it becomes clear why and how an ethics of practical action, as is the case with St. Clement from Ohrid, grows into an ethics of spiritual shaping of the space and the people where they live. That St. Clement manages this, there is a proof in the case of St. Naum, so it should come as no surprise that in addition to being proclaimed a saint, he is more often called a "miraculous". One can become a "miraculous" when a certain group declares certain "heal- ings" as a miracle of God, or when, understanding the ethics of his teachers Cyril and Methodius, but above all Clement’s, they become the starting point for creating a space in which man will come up to what the man is doing – a spiritual space in which he will find himself opening up to the Spirit. At the same time, without violating the iden- tity of God, monastic or canonical, and opening space for building churches the walls of which will give space for anticipatory commentary on the world, but also space for those who will enter them by looking at the frescoes, the icons, listening to the word of God, come to themselves as a temple of God, but universally ethically constructed – is the result that confirms this ethics of miraculousness, the ethics of the people's spirit. -

Approaches to Sarı Saltuk from the Late Middle Ages to the Present STEFAN ROHDEWALD Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen ABSTRACT Interpretations of texts on Sarı Saltuk may serve as a central example of the entanglement of Muslim and Christian contexts in (south-)eastern Europe and the Near East. Analyzing the fifteenth- century Saltuk-nâme and reports by Evliya Çelebi from the seventeenth century, a wide extension of the area concerned, as far as Poland-Lithuania, Muscovy and Sweden, can be observed. With the change of the contents of reports from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an increasing interest in Christians participating in the veneration of sites connected to Sarı Saltuk can be remarked. Yet descriptions of a veneration of Sarı Saltuk in a non-Muslim setting remain firmly embedded in Christian contexts, complicating a transreligious interpretation of them. In today’s Turkish perspective, though, Sarı Saltuk is no longer contextualized in a manner encompassing Russia and Poland, too, but much more in a context focusing on and affirming national Turkish Anatolian or nationalized post-Ottoman contents in the Balkans. -

NAUM MONASTERY By Evelyn Reuter Evelyn Reuter studied Ethnology, Protestant Theology and Southeastern European Studies at the Martin-Luther-Universität at Halle-Wittenberg (2007-2011) and at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität at Jena (2011-2016). During 2016-2019, she completed her PhD dissertation in Southeastern European Studies at the University of Jena. The title of the dissertation is “The Ambiguity of a Shared Religious Place: An Ethnographic Case Study on the St Naum Monastery in Ohrid (Macedonia).” Her research interests include: Balkans as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious space, religious minorities, Islam in the Balkans, Sufi Orders, culture of remembrance, sharing religious places. Abstract Shared religious places may be provocative phenomena—for the members of the sharing communities as well as for uninvolved observers. -

Maurice Barrès parlait de « lieux où souffle l'Esprit ». Serti dans les âpres reliefs albano- macédoniens, le lac d'Ohrid offre sa surface lisse et limpide comme une ca resse aux regards et un climat d'une douceur exceptionnelle pour la région. Sur son rivage sud-est, une source de résurgence importante est connue pour être celle du Drin. Juste à l'endroit où ses eaux claires se déversent dans le lac, un ro cher se dresse en promontoire. Ce rocher a fait l'objet d'un contentieux territo rial entre Serbes et Albanais de 1913 à 1925. Mais les charmes naturels du site sont loin de tout expliquer : des enjeux historiques, religieux et d'idéologie nationale s'y imbriquent étroitement. Ce rocher en éperon sur le lac fut en effet choisi au tournant du IXe et du Xe siècle par saint Naum pour y établir un monastère. Moins connu que saints Cyrille et Méthode, dont il fut le disciple, il partage leur culte sous l'invocation collective des Sept Apôtres des Slaves (Sveti Sedmočislenici). A cette époque, le peuple ment slave s'étendait, semble-t-il, profondément à l'ouest, dans les vallées du Devoll et du Shkumbin, où il laissa des traces dans la toponymie. La figure de saint Naum, telle que nous la présentent l'hagiographie médiévale et la tradi tion populaire, est davantage celle d'un ermite évangélisateur que celle d'un promoteur des lettres et de la machine hiérarchique, comme saint Clément d'Ohrid, son confrère. -
Why Macedonia Matters
AHIF P O L I C Y J O U R N A L Winter 2012-13 Why Macedonia Matters Panayiotis Diamadis With the formation of the Former Yugoslavian n Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in 1991, there has been a systematic effort to undermine the legitimate rights of the Greek state, particularly of Hellenes in the Greek Province of Macedonia. Selectivity, omission, and distortions of the past by FYROM have become routine. This extensive campaign of disinformation is aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the present borders. Motivating the arguments about history, language, culture, religion, identity and heritage is a struggle for control of the strip of territory between the Aemos (Balkan) Mountain range and the Aegean Sea, the land of Macedonia. Since earliest antiquity, the people to the north of the mountains have sought control over the fertile plains, strategic ports and mineral resources of Macedonia. In the twenty-first century, this continues to be the case. Despite FYROM’s endeavors to present the Macedonian issue as being about human rights, it is about territory and power. While Greece and Bulgaria have somewhat resolved their differences over access to the Aegean Sea through the framework of the European Union, land-locked FYROM has resisted all efforts to reach similar accommodation with any of its neighbors. The Macedonian issue, therefore, is not just a bilateral problem between Greece and FYROM. Bulgaria is just as concerned about the policies of governments in Skopje that endeavor to falsify the historical record and de facto challenge its established borders as well as those of Greece.
