VICE ADMIRAL JOSÉ M. NÚÑEZ TORRENTE

Vice Admiral José M. Núñez was born in Ferrol in November 20th, 1964. He was appointed to the Spanish Naval Academy in 1983, being graduated and commissioned Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) on July 16, 1988.

He was designated by the USN to take the Naval Jet Pilot course within the Training Command. After flight training he served with the 8th Squadron, flying the - .

At sea, his fleet duties have included assignments as Communications Officer of Aircra ; as Commanding Officer of Patrol Boat he also commanded Minehunter

integrated in MCMFORSOUTH; Nuñez also commanded the First Squadron of the Spanish Mine Counter Measures Force.

Other duty assignments, at sea and ashore, include: Staff Chief Operations, SPN Fleet Amphibious and Projection Group, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom (EF), in 2002, and Operation Iraki Freedom (IF), in 2003; Chief Operations, SPN Aircraft Flotilla; Chief Current Intelligence, STRIKFORNATO HQ in Naples, participating in NRF-12; XO and Chief of Studies of SPN Naval Academy, when the new Officers Teaching Model was instituted; Chief Plans, Maritime Action Force Staff; Officers Section Chief within the SPN Naval Teaching Office; and, finally, Superintendent of SPN Naval Academy.

He is specialist in Naval Communications, completed the Advanced and Command Staff Course in the United Kingdom and is in possession of the King College of London. He also completed the Combined Force Maritime Component Commander Course with the US Naval War College.

On September 2018 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and on 1st October 2018 was assigned as SPN Fleet Chief of Staff, where he also served as Chief of Staff for the Maritime Component Commander during National Operations against the COVID-19 pandemic:

On February 23th 2021 he was promoted to Vice Admiral (OF7) and was assigned as Commander of the High Readiness Maritime HQ of SPN Fleet, which is his current duty assignment.

Vice Admiral Núñez has been awarded with the SPN Naval Merit Great Cross, the Spanish Royal and Military Order of San Hermenegildo Great Cross and several national and international decorations.

He is married to Cristina and they have three sons: Paloma, Jose and Cristina.
