Mohammed bin Faris, one of the most authoritative Arab musicians of the 20th century, has inspired manyF to take up music as more than just a hobby. Mohammed bin Faris has mastered the Sut music which is said to be the blue genre of music and it was traditionally inspired from places like Africa, India and Persia. As a memorial to the significant contribution of Bin Faris, the Shaikh Ebrahim Centre of As Cold As Brutal Culture and Research has initiated bringing back the legacy of the music as it was originally loved and cherished. Mohammed bin Faris Al Khalifa House of Music and Hall resonates the unique style of beautiful tones that were culturally enriched and once heard vividly by the music lovers of the Kingdom. Weekender’s Santhosh Rajendran decided to explore the music house to know more of its aesthetic appeal and current standing.

Having laid the stone of inception on 12 September, 2005 Mohammed bin Faris Sut Music house is a reconstruction of Mohammed bin Faris’ house at site of the original building and had made into a small museum commemorating his life and career. It houses his instruments, his 78-rpm discs and other recordings. The house is located in the centre of Muharraq and has been restored as part of the ongoing project by Shaikh Ebrahim Center to hold onto the memory of Kingdom’s valuable members of society and those who Dazzle In Palazzos have given the country its identity today. As Cold As Brutal

hen a crime is committed, there is always an air of fear, guilt and apprehension, that looms over the head of the culprits. At times, the culprits who commit the crime either feel a twinge of guilt, or feel as light as a bird. But, what invokes curiosity in the plot, is the mental condition, the culprits suffer from and the intention behind Wcommitting those heinous crimes. Writing a book on the real happenings, possesses the charm of hooking the readers to the plot, but what makes it even more interesting is the ability of the readers to travel with the happenings and arrive at a conclusion that is neutral and fair. “In Cold Blood” which is penned by the late American novelist, screen writer, playwright and actor, Truman Capote, is one such novel, that recalls the accounts of a real murder that took place in the city of Kansas. It may open with a chirpy plot, but as the story becomes intense, curiosity, interest, suspense and a finer perspective about the happenings and the culprits gets established at the conclusion of the novel.

Set in the year 1959, two convicts Perry Smith and Richard Eugene Hickock, popularly known as ‘Dick’, unite together, and plot the robbery in the house of a well-to-do farmer, Herbert Clutter in the city of Kansas. As the story proceeds ahead, what makes it even more interesting is delving into the past life of the convicts, where the hardships experienced by Perry, will make one sympathize with him. Born into a family of rodeo performers, Perry’s mother, who is a victim of spousal abuse, leaves with her four children, where the children experience severe loneliness, due to the alcoholism, their mother indulged in. What is even more depressing over here, is the bitter experiences, Perry undergoes, when he along with his siblings are left in the care of the catholic nuns, where his emotions are wounded, due to the excessive torture committed on him by the nuns, which results, in him wetting the bed for a lifetime. To lighten the plot, owing to the heaviness experienced by delving into Perry’s life, some light is even thrown on Richard’s life. Being an exceptionally good student, Richard excelled in sports and academics, but financial constraints forced him to be a mechanic, where his unique mindset introduced him to the world of ‘Crime’. Being a womanizer, his corrupt mindset is exposed, when he tries to rape the daughter of Herbert Clutter, Nancy, who is in turn saved by Perry.

What makes the novel a bit sloppy, is the way it has been introduced. Reading the first page itself, gives one a unique perspective about the nature of Kansas City, but the way it has been dragged, has the possibility of stirring disinterest in proceeding ahead. Also, stressing about the Clutters, their background etc, will leave the readers amazed, inspired, happy yet sympathetic for the Clutter family. But, the novel picks up, and what makes it worthwhile is the conversations between Perry and Dick, and the required things they get hold of, in order to realize their plan of becoming millionaires, by looting the Clutter family. The novel reaches its apex, when the criminals finally arrive at the scene, and initiate the process of looting the Clutters.
