  • THE ROSEAU CATHEDRAL and Dominica's First Catholics. Part IV By
THE ROSEAU CATHEDRAL and Dominica’s first Catholics. Part IV by Bernard Lauwyck The old market in Roseau in 1770 by Agostino Brunias Father Martel provided us with the background of the early French settlers of Dominica: “Some left Guadeloupe or Martinique, crippled by debt, running from their creditors, and looking for a second chance in life; others came to work out their dreams in a place of complete freedom without shackles imposed by governments and laws,..” (“Histoire Générale des Missions catholiques Vol. 3 page 625 by Baron Mathieu Henrion). About one particular group of Catholic French settlers we know more as they emigrated to Dominica after a revolt in Martinique, known as La Gaoulé. (see Lennox Honychurch’s Dominica Story). Members of this group have been pillars of the Catholic Church up till the present. Let me give you some background on France of the “Ancien Régime” or France before the French revolution (which took place in 1789). The policies of the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin made the “glorious period” of the French “Sun King” Louis the fourteenth (1638-1715) possible. The Chateau de Versailles became the “golden cage” where this king gathered all the grand nobles of France. Stupendous ceremonies and rituals were centred around this absolute monarch. Louis XIV also waged many wars and all this pomp and glory had to be paid for by the lower classes who were grovelling in misery. Besides the heavy government tax, the lower classes also had to pay a mandatory tithe, called the "dîme" or 10 % on their produce to the Second Estate which was the clergy or nobility of the robe.

  • THE ROSEAU CATHEDRAL: the 1924 Sanctuary
THE ROSEAU CATHEDRAL: the 1924 sanctuary. by Bernard Lauwyck In last week’s Chronicle we explored the sanctuary of the Roseau Cathedral dated 1905. In today’s article, we look at the sanctuary 19 years later, in 1924, 2 years after the death of Bishop Philip Schelfhaut C.Ss.R. His successor was, as he was, a Belgian Redemptorist missionary, who had worked in the West Indies for many years, James Moris C.Ss.R.. Bishop Philip Schelfhaut started the Ecclesiastical Bulletin of Roseau, which was published from 1907 by Father A. Finoulst. These bulletins have been one of my many sources on the history of the Catholic Church in Dominica. In 1909 The Dominica Chronicle was started as the official newspaper of the Catholic Church. I have been able, to create a composite picture of the 1924 Cathedral Sanctuary, based on a picture out of the Ecclesiastical Bulletin of Roseau. The original picture was taken during the 1924 Redemptorist mission, featuring a large black cross with the words : HEAVEN, DEATH, JUDGEMENT, HELL. This reminds me that the Redemptorists were called the “helleprekers” in Flanders: hell-preachers because they were very gifted preachers, warning and frightening people with the fires of hell. Mr. Stanley A.W. Boyd, a former editor of the Dominica Chronicle in his “a brief history of the Cathedral of Roseau” mentions that the Cathedral was finally “free of debt” and was officially consecrated in 1925 by Bishop J. Moris. I have not been able to confirm this consecration date from other sources, but we know that the Cathedral bazaars/ fundraisers had been very successful and enabled Bishop Schelfhaut to clear the debt left over from the 1907-1910 renovations.

THE ROSEAU CATHEDRAL and Dominica’s first Catholics. Part I by Bernard Lauwyck Roseau Cathedral stained glass window on the Sacred Heart of Jesus “Apostolat de la prière et la communion réparatrice” As we know, the Kalinago people were the first baptised Catholics in Dominica. Father Raymond Breton wrote: “Among the Caribs of Dominica there is not one who has not been instructed in our holy religion; they listened willingly to me and offered me their children to be taught the Christian doctrine “ Before his death in 1679 Father Breton wrote his friends this letter (found in Bishop Moris’ “History of the Diocese”) “To the Caribs of Dominica. My dear friends, Several years have passed since my departure from your island. During all this time my body was far from you, but not my mind and heart, because you are created, as well as we, to the image and likeness of God. It is the desire of your salvation which had urged me to be the first to remain with you. As I can no longer instruct you personally in the mysteries of our holy religion, on account of much infirmities, I have translated a summary of our belief from French into your language, in order that our fathers and yours, who will visit you, may be able to teach you. I conjure you by our old friendship to receive them well when they come to you, to listen to them when they instruct you and to obey their orders. They will love you as I loved you; they will bear with your weaknesses and try to please you.
