The Roseau Cathedral and Images Part I By Bernard Lauwyck OUR DIOCESE

ur Roseau Cathedral is full of images, as any other Catholic church: the statues of the Holy OFamily and saints, Stations of the Cross, the two murals, Our Lady of Perpetual Help triptych, etc. Our protestant friends would call them “idols”. Confronted with this “idol” word, I always respond that when I kiss the photograph of my little granddaughter Elisa, this does not mean that I worship her “image” but it means that I express my love for my granddaughter through this image. Many people assume mistakenly that the Jewish community has observed this commandment strictly but evidence of ancient synagogues tells us another story as you will see. In the Catholic church’s history there were other moments of intense iconographic destruction such as the French revolution. Even in the immediate period after the Vatican II council many devotional images were disposed off in churches and convents. My father, who was working in a convent at the time, brought many of the discarded statues home and our attic was full of them. He could not understand how the sisters could get His Lordship, Bishop Gabriel Malzaire,Bishop of rid of all these beautiful artworks.
