NICK MULVEY ! Official Site | Facebook! | Twitter ! Nick Mulvey Is Less the Master of Reinvention, As He Is the Master of Invention ! ! NICK MULVEY ! Official Site | Facebook! | Twitter ! Nick Mulvey is less the master of reinvention, as he is the master of invention. Invention by its very definition being a ‘unique method, composition, or process’. First Mind ticks all three boxes, and it ticks them in !spades. As a founding member of sprawling, Mercury Prize nominated jazz collective, Portico Quartet, Nick played an otherworldly new instrument called The Hang, and their music still resonates today in broad- er circles outside of any insular jazz clique (Alt-J quoted one of Nick’s Portico lyrics on their debut al- bum). Nick though wanted a change, and one where the creative process was perhaps a more singular vision, albeit no less! liberal-minded. Putting himself through a guitar school in Cuba, the only Brit in the room, his technique is exquisite, a blur of picked notes and offbeat, irregular timings. Nick is one of life's great thinkers, and coupling his beautifully delivered verse with the intricacies of his playing, you have something wildly at odds with his peers.! Three single releases into this solo career and Nick's music is making impressive, encouraging footprints across the globe. Concluding 2013 on the BBC Sound of 2014 shortlist, those introductory singles, Fever to The Form, Nitrous, and the irresistible Cucurucu are picking up fans in all the right places. Playlisted at Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music, Absolute Radio, and XFM, and armed with a slew of impressive press quotes, its crucially not just the airwaves and printed press that are taking to Nick but their listeners and readers! alike. The confines of the studio, where an artist can pour over every dropped note or wayward vocal, are rarely the litmus test for a musician's true worth, so it's equally as encouraging that the past twelve months have taken Nick across the UK and Europe and back again, performing to bigger crowds and selling out venues well in advance. Laura Marling invited him out on a full UK tour last Autumn, Ben Howard has become a big vocal supporter following a support slot in Ireland, and Nick's upcoming UK and European tour already includes sold-out shows in cities far beyond his London home. Last Summer he was a regular on the festival stages to busy crowds, and this year already looks likely to repeat and surpass that feat. He dips speculative toes in America this March with his first performances out at SXSW in! Texas. First Mind is an engrossing listen, and not easily defined. It encourages an open-mind (the ‘First Mind’ perhaps), and a sense of the worldliness that Nick poured into its making. Cucurucu is an interpretation of DH Lawrence's poem, Piano, wrapped within a heady groove. And groove, for all its modern day bag- gage, is at the heart of everything Nick Mulvey does. Nitrous, a song about a daydreamer selling laugh- ing gas, positively radiates with a classic chug and groove when the bassline slinks in. There are contem- plative moments too, Fever to the Form and Meet Me There are poignant odes, whilst The Trellis and Juramidam showcase that leftfield, Eastern-inflected guitar technique. It is a record that gets under your skin, and its sense of exploration is palpable. For press information contact [email protected] Ellie Jones . Portico Quartet Portico Quartet Mercury nominated East Londoners release their third, self-titled, album. Real World Records - CDRWP186 - Release date: 30 January 2012 Portico Quartet still sound like nothing you ever heard before. The Mercury nominated East London based outfit’s unique music has expanded to embrace new sonic territories. Drawing on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as they take their strange, beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new vistas where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver and echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter. But all underpinned by a shared joy in collective music making as the band push their inimitable music into the future. It’s a change that was brewing for some time. As anyone who saw Portico Quartet live throughout 2010 knew, the band had added a heady brew of live samples and loops to their arsenal, exploring a harder-edged sound that brought a more contemporary edge to their previously wholly acoustic music. It was a metamorphosis that was accelerated when the band’s original hang player, Nick Mulvey, left to explore his own musical muse earlier this year and the remaining members drummer Duncan Bellamy, bassist Milo Fitzpatrick and saxophonist Jack Wyllie started exploring the possibilities of sampling the hang and triggering it’s sounds from electronic pads, opening up a whole new way of utilising the instrument’s unique sound. It accelerated further when they invited keyboard player, and now hang player, Keir Vine (an old friend of Milo’s from Goldsmith’s University) to come on board.

Sign to Real World Records. Announce new recording and spring tour dates. + Crisis Hidden Gig on June 2 with Star Sailor and Bombay Bycyle Club Portico Quartet are four young musicians from London who sound like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Their strange, beautiful sound was honed busking at the South Bank in London and playing in unusual spaces; churches, galleries and chill-out zones. The band, who all live together in East London, describe their ethos as like an Indy band that plays post-jazz and their unique, hooky sound has won them fans from Gilles Peterson to Radio 4 as well as catching the ear of Real World Records head honcho Peter Gabriel. Their debut album Knee-Deep In The North Sea (Babel/Vortex records) was named Time Out’s Jazz, Folk and World music album of the year for 2007 and was one of the Nationwide Mercury Prize albums of the year for 2008 Portico Quartet signed to Real World Records in February 2009 and will record their eagerly anticipated second album and label debut with producer John Leckie (Doves, Radiohead, The Stone Roses) at the helm at Abbey Road in May. “We are delighted to be releasing Portico Quartet on Real World Records. They create environments with their own world of sounds, that are as stimulating as they are soulful " Peter Gabriel “We are all really delighted to be joining the Real World family and of course excited to be recording at Abbey Road with one of our favourite producers John Leckie”. Portico Quartet The band also tour in May with dates in Penzance, Constantine, Bristol, Plymouth, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester, Coventry, Leeds and the Cheltenham and Bath jazz festivals.

  • The Mercury Prize Shortlist: Reading Between the Lines | Nouse
Nouse Web Archives The Mercury Prize shortlist: reading between the lines Page 1 of 5 News Comment MUSE. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › News Features Reviews Playlists The Mercury Prize shortlist: reading between the lines What do the 2014 ‘Album of the Year’ contenders say about modern British music? By Chris Owen, Editor (2015/16) Monday 27 October 2014 First, let’s make one thing absolutely clear: like most awards given for artwork, the Mercury Prize means nothing. Chosen from a collection of roughly 250 UK-based albums submitted by paying entrants – a fraction of those written and released in any one year – the winning record is singled out by a panel of experts for being the best bit of good music released between two Septembers. Circular debates about subjectivity, influence and bias aside, the award is proven a few rungs short of sacrosanct by its dubious track record. The winner in 2003 (the same year that Radiohead’s Hail To The Thief was nominated, and Muse’s Absloution released)? Boy In Da Corner by Dizzie Rascal. Ignored entirely by last year’s panel were outstanding efforts from London Grammar, Fuck Buttons and Frightened Rabbit in favour of Jake Bugg and Rudimental. Of course, it’s impossible to please everyone. This is exactly the reason why any conclusions drawn from this year’s shortlist about the nature of the UK’s music landscape should be taken with several handfuls of salt. But draw some I will. Shakers at the ready. #1: British music has plenty to say that isn’t being said.
