Ed.Council.Grad.Middleschool.Letter St. Vincent Martyr School Middle School Academic Achievement During their tenure here at SVMS, students strive toward ever increasing academic challenges. SVMS middle school faculty work diligently to encourage students to study with greater focus and prepare more thoroughly for classes. Teachers share perspectives that enable students to think differently and more deeply about matters great and small. Recognizing the uniqueness and individuality of children, teachers guide them to discover and develop their God-given gifts. SVMS’s fundamental task is, and has always been, to educate the whole person by integrating Christian values with learning in daily life. On behalf of the Education Council, we are proud to share the following information about some recent academic successes of our middle school program. Academic Competitions In 2016, SVMS middle school grades participated in the NJ Math League for the second year in a row and placed well in regional standings against many other Morris County middle schools1. Here is a summary of the results by grade: • 6th grade - SVMS student achieved the highest individual score in Morris County • 7th grade - SVMS team ranked #4 in Morris County • 8th grade - SVMS team ranked #4 in Morris County. In 2015 and 2016, SVMS also participated in a national engineering competition called Future City, which is a program of DiscoverE. In January of 2015, SVMS sent one team to the New Jersey regional competition held in Rutgers, and they performed well. Our competing students enjoyed the experience so much that the SVMS program grew, and we were able to send two teams to the 2016 New Jersey regionals. Again, both teams performed admirably, and they are eager to do even better next year. A few SVMS middle school students have also been honored as some of the brightest young students in the world at recent awards ceremonies sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). As part of the CTY Talent Search, advanced students in 2ndthrough 8th grades take challenging tests that can reveal their true capacity for learning. Seventh and eighth graders take the SAT or ACT, the same tests used for college admissions. These students may also take advanced versions of the School and College Ability Test (SCAT) or the Spatial Test Battery (STB). In 2015, two SVMS students received scores that earned them High Honors. In 2016, four SVMS middle 1 Other Morris County schools in the NJ Math League competition included public middle and high schools in Boonton, Chatham, Denville, Mountain Lakes, Succasunna, East Hanover, Florham Park, Mendham, Montville, Oak Ridge, Chester, Roxbury, Pequannock Township, Flanders, Parsippany and Morris Plains, as well as St Joe’s in Mendham, Delbarton, VillaWalsh, Morris Catholic, Morristown-Beard and the Peck School. school students were recognized for High Honors scores, including a current 7th grader and graduating 8th grader who received top scores on the SAT. Application, Acceptance, and Scholarship 2013-2016 On behalf of the Education Council, we are proud to share the following information about the past four graduating classes of St. Vincent Martyr School. There were a total of 132 total graduates from 2013 – 2016, many of who apply and are accepted to some of the most competitive and academically challenging high schools in the state. Additionally, many of our students consistently place into Honors level and Advance placement courses upon entering high school. SVMS continues to achieve its mission of providing a Christ-centered foundation and excellent education necessary for students to compete successfully with their peers outside the SVMS walls. We believe it is important to recognize the tremendous success of these students and the education they received at SVMS. Below is a summary of the high schools our students have been accepted to, are attending, or scheduled to attend, as well as the aggregate scholarship awards offered to each graduating class. The caliber of an SVMS education, and the overall preparation of our students, is well-known and recognized by the leadership of these schools. The Education Council would like to extend its sincere congratulations to each of the SVMS graduates and their families, and wish them continued success in their academic endeavors.
