Tarasov* Siberian Federal University 82/1 Svobodny, Krasnoyarsk, 660041 Russia 1 Received 4.04.2011, received in revised form 11.04.2011, accepted 18.04.2011 In meaning Grunewald Battle for Moscovia Tsardom, their on the international position of Russian State in the process of integration of Russian territories. The given article is dedicated to the 600-anniversary of the Battle of Grunewald, which was celebrated in 2010. In the given work, we consider the influence of the victory of the join forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish Kingdom and regiments of the Golden Horde over the troops of the Teutonic Order in 1410 on the external political position of the Russian State. The authors come to the conclusion that the Grunewald Battle results had negative consequences for the Moscovia Tsardom. To our mind, the defeat of the Teutonic Order resulted in Lithuania’s, Poland’s and Golden Horde’s strengthening and it significantly worsened the external political position of the Moscovia State, and delayed integration of the Russian lands around Moscow for a long period of time, postponed the fall of the Golden Horde’s yoke and contributed to the rift of the integral ancient Russ nation. The article also analyses the reasons of formation of the positive estimation of the results of the Grunewald Battle in the native historiography, and considers the points of view of foreign leading historians on the results of the Battle.

    SPECIAL ISSUE: Studying THE ORIENT IN Lithuania Introduction: Tracing the bicentennial history of Oriental studies in Lithuania Audrius Beinorius Vilnius University Historiam nescire hoc est semper puerum esse CICERO This special issue of Acta Orientalia Vilnensia is dedicated to the bicentenary of the commencement of Asian studies in Lithuania and particularly at Vilnius University, which was founded in 1579 and is the oldest academic institution in Lithuania. Two hundred years is a comparatively short period, but these years have a wealthy history, especially keeping in mind that Asian or Oriental studies, as it was called at the beginning of this period, was a newly emerging academic field that has grown from a purely comparative and philological approach to recently discovered non-European cultures due to of the increasing implications of colonial aims and the imperative to manage properly those subjugated Asian counties and nations. Certainly, an integral part of this interest in Asian learning was European romantic fascination with the cultural and intellectual otherness of that area. Lithuania was not excepted from this kind of intellectual involvement. The beginning of the 19th century was a politically complicated and turbulent period in Lithuanian history. After the third and last division of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, between Tsarist Russia and Prussia in 1795, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became an eastern province of the Russian Empire and formally disappeared from the world map for a more than a century. Notwithstanding, some academic institutions, including the main one, Vilnius University, continued their activities, even though under the strict control and supervision of Russian officials.

ISBN 978-609-8183-13-9 Out of a longstanding interest in the question of the inclusion of the nobility in the modern Lithuanian nation, Olga Mastianica has written the book ‘The Nobility in the Lithuanian National Project (Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries)’, which is a valuable contribution to the study of Central and East European national movements. As the author notes, the question of the inclusion of the nobility in national movements was also important in other Central and East European national movements, so Lithuania was no exception. Mastianica attempts to shed some light on the issue of the (limited) inclusion of the nobility in the Lithuanian national movement, by zooming in on the attitudes of the Lithuanian intelligentsia towards the place of the nobility within the modern Lithuanian nation. The attitudes of prominent activists, mostly grouped according to their political-ideological affinities, are mostly inferred from a study of the press. The focus of Mastianica’s research is the newspaper Litwa (1908–1914), which was conceived with the help of leading figures in the Lithuanian national movement. Published in the Polish language, the newspaper aimed to present the program of the Lithuanian national movement, and more generally, ‘to defend the national, economic and social interests of Lithuania’ (p. 94). Its intended audience was Slavic-speaking people who did not speak Lithuanian, but nonetheless were brothers and sisters of Lithuanians by ‘blood’, and who wanted to live in peace with Lithuanians.

    Princes and Cossacks: Putting Ukraine on the Map of Europe Serhii Plokhy The word “Ukraine,” which today is used to define an independent country in the middle of Europe, has medieval origins and was first used by the Kyivan chroniclers of the twelfth century to define the areas of today’s Ukraine bor- dering on the Pontic steppes. In the second half of the seventeenth century the term “Ukraine” entered the international vocabulary as one of the names of the Cossack polity created in the course of the Khmelnytsky Uprising (1648– 57). By that time, European geographers could already locate Ukraine on the maps produced by the French engineer and cartographer Guillaume Levas- seur de Beauplan. His, however, was not the first depiction of Ukraine on a European map.1 The terms “Ukraine” and “Cossacks” appeared on European maps simul- taneously in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Both terms were introduced for the first time on a map of Eastern Europe produced by a group of cartographers and engravers assembled by Mykalojus Kristupas Radvila (Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł) the Orphan, one of the most prominent aristo- crats in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The map, titled “Detailed Description of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Other Adjacent Lands,” captured not only major political and territorial, but also social and cultural changes that had taken place in the region in the course of the sixteenth century. The Radvila map covers the territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as they existed before the Union of Lublin (1569) between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and has a supplement consisting of a separate map of the Dnieper River.

    Ukraine's Westward Bent By Gregory Feifer JUNE 2001 KIEVmUkraine is poor. The extent of the country's unenviable state of affairs is perhaps best illustrated by its massive energy bill to Russia, a country on which Ukraine depends for economic survival. (Basketcase Russia, of all places!) So it may come as a bit of a surprise to learn that in comparison to any Russian city, the Ukrainian capital looks clean, orderly, in parts even stunning. In prepara- tion for its celebrations marking a decade of Ukrainian independence in Au- gust, Kiev is undergoing a massive regime of rebuilding. Pedestrian underpasses are being reconstructed; the train station is being completely renovated. Almost every church in the city center looks as if the paint on its walls is still drying. That's just the literal surface of things. Other comparisons also put Russia to shame. Ukrainians in general are a relatively friendly, civilized lot. They're also industrious. Ukraine's corruption-riddled economy and crony politics still need far to go to recover from many decades of Moscow-imposed communism, but society itself is westernizing quickly. That's not the picture one gets reading news about this country outside its borders. Western media tend only to report economic and political crises--and Ukraine has had more than its fair share in the past months. There's also the reputation-blackening Chernobyl nuclear plant, which was finally shut down last December, some 15 years after the world's worst nuclear disaster claimed A view of the Dniepr River and the east bank of the city.

    Artistic Expression of the Translatio imperii Concept in the Latin Epic Poetry of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th Century and the European Literary Context1 Žanna Nekraševič-Karotkaja Translatio imperii (transfer of the empire or transfer of power) is a political stereo- type of transfer of metaphysical world domination from country to country. Having originated in late Antiquity in the realm of political ideology, this idea preserved its relevance and expressed itself in the literature of many countries all throughout the Middle Ages as well as during the Renaissance and Baroque period. The concept of translatio imperii explains the belief of the Byzantine emperors in their excep- tional right over emperorship as legal successors of the old Rome. The emergence of the empire in the West in the times of Charles the Great (742-814) and then Otto I (912-973) did not destroy that stereotype and even added a new meaning to it. After the fall of Constantinople (1453), “the history of thetranslatio imperii myth in the Latin West was over” (Paškin 2012: 117). This concept gradually lost its universal character and was interpreted within the confines of a nation. In that sense, the title Sacrum Imperium Romanum Nationis Germanicae is quite indicative.     7 The Journal of Belarusian Studies World War II Memory Politics: Jewish, Polish and Roma Minorities of Belarus BY ANDREJ KOTLJARCHUK * ‘No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten!’ Olga Bergholz, 1960 A popular slogan used by the Soviet authorities in regard to WWII. The aim of this study is to interpret recent trends in contemporary memory politics in Belarus, with focus on the Holocaust, Roma genocide memorials, and the memorial sites of the Polish minority in Belarus. The author believes that the theory of ‘path dependence’ is suitable for analysis of contemporary Belarusian memory politics with respect to World War II. In accordance with this theory, the scope and limitations of new politics are determined by the political choices made or results attained much earlier by the previous political regime. Recent comparative political studies adapt the ‘path dependence’ concept to historical material (Hedlund 2005). From this point of view, a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Belarusian memory politics is not possible without an examination of the Soviet period. In his study on the memorialization of the Holocaust in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia Jeffrey Blutinger defines three basic approaches to contemporary memory politics in Eastern Europe. The first approach, ‘aphasia’, means a virtual taboo on memory typical for the communist age. The second stage, ‘deflective negationism’, means that the Holocaust is recognised, but all responsibility for it is placed exclusively on the Germans. At the same time, the problem of local collaborationism is slurred over.     In Search of Agency: Examining Belarusian Society from Below Felix Ackermann, Mark Berman, Olga Sasunkevich In 2005, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice referred to Belarus as the “last remaining true dictatorship in the heart of Europe.”1 In the twelve years since, this image has dominated not just mass media but also scholarly representations of Belarus. In recent times, new contenders to the title of “Europe’s last dictatorship” have appeared: an aggressive and unabashed authoritarianism has risen in Russia and right‐wing populism has gathered strength in Central and Western Europe. All the same, the “last dictatorship in Europe” remains a popular metaphor for describing the Belarusian situation. Furthermore, this sobriquet seems to refer to more than the current regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka. Rather, it extends an entrenched habit of thinking about Belarus as a quintessentially East European country, one lying in “shadowed lands of backward‐ ness, even barbarism” (Wolff 1994). Under this view, Belarus is above all else an object, its population cowed and passive—at best dominated, at worst slaughtered by a succession of brutal rulers, domestic and foreign.
