BIG SIR MESSAGE

Welcome to February, important dates during the month are: the 2nd is ground hog day, the 6th is our luncheon at McGinnis, the 14th is Valentines Day “remember to make those dinner reser- vations early”, the 19th is Presidents’ Day. We celebrate all of our ex presidents. As we all know February is the shortest month of the year. This year will be the first time since 1999 that the month will pass without a single full moon. That was for those who even care. I was not able to attend the January luncheon, but from all re- ports the speaker was excellent, and the attendance was outstand- ing. Let’s keep up the good work. Again if any of our members have any recommendations for new events or activities for the Sirs group please bring them to the attention of any of the board mem- bers. Also if you have a friend who you feel would be an asset to the group please invite them to a luncheon. Golf will starting again soon, I' am looking forward to getting back on the course with the merry little group of golfers in our or- ganization. Jim, Steve, and Mike are diligently working on new ac- tivities which will be announced soon. Don’t forget the Surf and Turf dinner is March 15, hope to see everyone there, it was a lot of fun last year. If our plane does not go down on the way home I' am looking forward to see “all” your smiling faces on February 6. Until then enjoy the last few days of January.

Chuck Krogh Big Sir

The SIRndader’s

MIKE SCAFANI JERRY HAYDEN

The SIRenaders started off the new year by singing at Senior Access, which is on Skyview Terrace in San Rafael. Senior Access is a Day Care center for seniors. We usually have a small group that shows up to hears us sing. It is usually about 12 people. Still I can honestly say that they really enjoy our program. We next are scheduled to sing at Novato Health Center in Novato. It's located on Hill Rd. There is always a group of twenty-five or so who come into the rec room to hear us sing. On the 19 of January we are back in Novato and singing at Deer Park Retirement Center. This is located on Canyon Rd. This place is probably the most upscale facility we sing in, you should see the gor- geous piano they have. The following week we sing at Lifelong Living Center at 1905 Novato Blvd. This place is also a day care center, but here we usually have between 25 and 30 seniors who come to enjoy our mu- sic. And that takes care of the month of January.

FOR FUN A group of 12 women were at a seminar on how to live in a loving relationship with their hus- bands. The women were asked, "How many of you love your husband?" All the women raised their hands.

Then they were asked, "When was the last time you told your husband you loved him?" Some women answered today, a few yesterday, and some couldn't remember.

The women were then told to take out their cellphones and text their husband "I love you, sweet- heart."

Next the women were instructed to exchange phones with another woman and read aloud the text message they received in response to their message.

Below are 12 actual replies from their husbands. If you have been married for quite a while, you understand that these replies are a sign of true love. Who else would reply in such a succinct and honest way?

1. Who the hell is this?

2. Hey, mother of my children, are you sick or what?

3. Yeah, and I love you too. What's wrong?

4. What now? Did you wreck the car again?

5. I don't understand what you mean?

6. What the hell did you do now?

7. Are you sure this is for me?

8. Don't beat about the bush, just tell me how much you need?

9. Am I dreaming?

10. If you don't tell me who this message is actually for, someone will die.

11. I thought we agreed you wouldn't drink during the day.

12. Your mother is coming to stay with us, isn't she?

GOLFERS CORNER

Ready for the new year? Hope so. Last year we lost a few of our good friends and Golfers. Notably Art Ross, Don Gotelli, Bill Bevin, John Murphy and Don Vaughn. Let us hope for a Happy and Healthy New Year with a lot of good golf with good friends.

Not much to report until we get started in February. We need rain, but not on golf days.

Tee bit for the month: A framer, having a bad year, was selling his peaches door to door. He came to this cute little cottage and a very beautiful woman came to the door in a very sheer negligee. He asked her if she would like to buy some peaches. She lifted the top of her negligee and asked are they as form as these? Yes he said with a tear forming In his eyes. Again she showed him the other side and asked are they as pink as this. Again, with a tear, rolling down his face, he said yes the are. She then lifted her gown to show her fuzzy area and asked are the as fuzzy as this. Again he replies yes and breaks down crying. She asked why on earth are you crying? He replies, The drought got my corn, the flood ruined my soy beans, I voted for Trump and now I am going to get screwed out of my peaches.

Hope to see you on the first tee. Jim

TURNING PAGES by Bud Pflueger

“Deep Freeze” by John Sandford 2017 Crime Detective genre The latest John Sandford novel is in the Virgil Flowers series. Virgil is asked by his boss in the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to return to Trippton, Minnesota, to investigate the murder of a wealthy woman whose body turned up in a warm , unfrozen area of the Mississippi River. (Trippton was the site for an earlier nov- el involving a murderous school board.) He receives a second, unrelated assignment in that town, relayed from the Governor to his boss, to help a woman investigator from LA, Marga- ret Griffin, in town to serve cease and desist papers from Mattel Corp on Jesse McGovern. She runs an operation making and selling online altered Barbie dolls, which have morphed into sex toys with pornographic dialogue and “added appendages” (Think Ken). Jesse’s whereabouts are kept secret by the locals, since the illegal activity is supporting a poor group of folks who need the extra income to survive. This humorous side story addresses Virgil’s conflict between his legal obligation and his sense of rightness. Like in most of Sand- ford’s novels, the reader meets David Birkman, the killer, at the very beginning. This is a good read from an author who never fails to please. “Artemis” by 2017 Andy Weir’s first novel, “The ” was a huge literary success and made into a major movie. Artemis is equally nerdy and hi-tech. Artemis is a moon based five-domed city , half underground. Jasmine Bashara (Jazz), the female protagonist, was born in Artemis but is of Saudi origins. (Serious crime is low but transgressors might be shipped back to their earthside countries of origin, onerous if you have spent all your life on the moon.) Undera- chieving her potential, Jazz is a genius but currently always broke, and earning money by transporting packages from the space port to various destinations in the city. She augments her income by delivering illegal items, one to a very rich and powerful person. Artemis is owned by a huge mob-controlled earth corporation which owns and runs the power source, an aluminum mine, which also supplies all the oxygen as a by-product, and is using Artemis to launder money. Artemis flourishes by a prosperous tourist trade with regular visitors for all over earth, many of whom flock outside the domes to visit nearby Apollo 11 landing site and visitor center. The large cast of locals include Jazz’s father from whom she is estranged. The technological aspects of this novel are well-researched, and exhaustive explanations oc- cupy much of the writing. I enjoyed that side of the novel and I like the protagonist, who is always on the brink of disaster. The narrative describing the social interactions is naïve and repetitive, the spoken dialogue immature. However, the plot is engrossing. I enjoyed the detailed explanations of chemistry and physics, the challenges of living in a hostile environ- ment at one sixth earth gravity. This is not as good as “”, but I still highly rec- ommend it. If you enjoyed reading “The Martian”14 you must also read Weir’s second novel.

The Next Sirs Poker Game is scheduled for Monday February 11, 2018

We had 7 players on Monday January 8th who checked in to play poker. Those who arrived early were treated to a really nice breakfast and we had a really great game this month in spite of all the rain. We did not have a really big winners or looser this month as in the past few months, This month the following players were able to play: Ray Bufkin, Steve Miller, Bob Null , Jim Stein, Walt Torrens, my next door neighbor as a guest Joe Carlomagno and I. We missed Steve Bettega, Mike Dean, Stan Ellexson, Tom Fox, Sandy Grieve, and Jack Michel. We hope to see everyone at the February 11th poker game and as Walt said at the January Sirs Luncheon, please join our Poker Group for a great breakfast at the 19th Hole Bar and Grill. Due to the rain and heavy winds, Indian Valley closed down at 1 PM to go home. Today we played poker out in front of the fire place in the restaurant.

The Sirs Poker Club play poker on the first Monday after the regular Sirs luncheon is a lot of fun. Please take the time to join us. If you think we can improve on our games and get larger turnouts, give us your thoughts and comments? We would like to improve in the number of players, and have a fun outing and enjoy good friends and food.

There is a $50 buy in to play poker. The red chips are 50 cents, black chips dollar and the yellow chips are five dollars. There is a 3 raise maximum and it is dealer’s choice on the game they would like to play. The deck has one joker and it goes with aces, straights, and flushes. However, if you name a wild card game such as down and dirty, the joker is automatically wild unless you state at the beginning the joker is not wild.

Hope you can take the time to join us for a really fun day of poker. If you are interested in joining our poker group, please let Walt Torrens or me know. We will add you to the monthly notification and e-mail reminder to list of play- ers.
