Closing Plenary Danny Glover and Felix Justice Actors Wednesday, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. “In Conversation with Danny Glover and Felix Justice” Friends since first meeting as struggling Bay area actors years ago, Danny Glover and Felix Justice have honed a stellar performance that stems from a long history of friendship and mutual respect, both on- and off-stage. Using examples from their lives and some of the great works of literature, both men bring to life their devotion to the education of young people and how to inspire the next generation of leaders in the world. Photo credit: Chris Buck Danny Glover A native of San Francisco, Glover attended San Francisco State College and trained at the Black Actors' Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre. He first merited national attention in the New York production of Athol Fugard's "Master Harold and the Boys." He has garnered rave reviews for his roles in "The Color Purple," "Dreamgirls," "Grand Canyon," "To Sleep With Anger" and the "Lethal Weapon" series. In recognition of his lifetime dedication to public service, Glover was honored with the 2003 NAACP Chairman’s Award. In 2006, he captured Director's Guild of America honors for his contributions to film and television. Felix Justice Felix Justice grew up in Florence, S.C., and studied theater in both San Francisco and New York. His one-man Martin Luther King, Jr., show, "Prophecy in America," premiered in 1981 at San Francisco's Lorraine Hansberry Theatre and subsequently toured throughout the United States and Africa. .

The stories told in this genre reflect values that are embedded in American culture. They are typically about men of strong character who represent a certain kind of moral order, and the story being told is about how they confront and overcome villains, outlaws, and other “bad guys” who are enemies of that order. It can be a black-and-white world of good vs. evil, or it can be a world where there are many shades of gray, so that it’s less easy to tell the difference. This conflict is typically played out on the American frontier, in the late 19th century (1865-1900), during the decades after the American Civil War. It is the era of cowboys, the growth of the cattle industry, the fencing of the open range, the demise of the buffalo herds, the final displacement of the Native American tribes, the building of cross- continental railroads, and rapid settlement of the frontier territories fed by waves of immigration and the availability of free land made possible by the Homestead Acts. The conflict in a western typically involves and is eventually resolved by violence – fistfights, gunfire, sometimes even explosives.

Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Danny Glover Guest Speaker San Francisco Bayview Rotary Please join us for an early evening with guest speaker, actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover. The San Francisco Bayview Rotary is honored to be associated with a Danny Glover INSPIRE project to further our 2011 Rotary Club Ben Robinson Educational Scholarship fund, benefiting Bayview college-bound youth; promoting health while building funds with healthy coffee products. Glover, UNICEF Ambassador, will talk about 'Community Health and Prosperity' highlighting his ongoing work in bringing healthy alternatives and opportunities to people and communities around the world. The San Francisco native may include some anecdotes of his early work in San Francisco and the Bayview community. Actor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover has been a commanding presence on screen, stage and television for more than 25 years. As an actor, his film credits range from the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise to smaller independent features, some of which Glover also produced. Most recently, he co-starred in the critically acclaimed feature Dreamgirls directed by Bill Condon and in Po' Boy's Game for director Clement Virgo. He appeared in the hit feature Shooter for director Antoine Fuqua and can currently be seen in Honeydripper for director John Sayles and Be Kind, Rewind for director Michel Gondry. Glover has also gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for economic justice, and access to health care and education programs in the United States and Africa. For these efforts, Glover received a 2006 DGA Honor. AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA CINEMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA The history of the African-American Cinema is a harsh timeline of racism, repression and struggle contrasted with film scenes of boundless joy, hope and artistic spirit. Until recently, the study of the "separate cinema" (a phrase used by historians John Kisch and Edward Mapp to describe the segregation of the mainstream, Hollywood film community) was limited, if not totally ignored, by writers and researchers. The uphill battle by black filmmakers and performers, to achieve acceptance and respect, was an ugly blot on the pages of film history. Upon winning his Best Actor Oscar for LILLIES OF THE FIELD (1963), Sidney Poitier accepted, on behalf of the countless unsung African-American artists, by acknowledging the "long journey to this moment." This emotional, heartbreaking and inspiring journey is vividly illustrated by the latest acquisition to the Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts - THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA COLLECTION. The valuable research material, housed in this collection, includes over 300 pressbooks (illustrated campaign and advertising catalogs sent to theatre owners), press kits (media packages including biographies, promotional essays and illustrations), programs and over 1000 photographs and slides. The journey begins with the blatant racism of D.W. Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), a film respected as an epic milestone, but reviled as the blueprint for black film stereotypes that would appear throughout the 20th century. Researchers will follow African-American films through an extended period of stereotypical casting (SONG OF THE SOUTH, 1946) and will be dazzled by the glorious "All-Negro" musicals such as STORMY WEATHER (1943), ST.LOUIS BLUES (1958) and PORGY AND BESS (1959).
