  • Why YOU Should Be an English Major
Why YOU should be an English Major You’ll be able to communicate your ideas effectively. This is what employers want the most – people who can communicate clearly. Impress your employer with your ability to communicate, and you’ll get promoted. You’ll also sound smarter than everybody else. You’ll be able to learn new tasks and ideas. A liberal arts education teaches you how to learn, not how to do a specific job. Your employer will provide on-the-job training. Besides, the hot jobs of 20 years from now haven’t even been thought of yet; major in English, learn how to learn new job skills, and stay employed. You’ll be prepared for med school, law school, business school… Being an English major teaches you how to think critically. Graduate schools in every field are more interested in your ability to analyze situations and make connections between concepts than in your ability to memorize lists. You’ll get a good job. Major scientific, technological, industrial, and financial companies like to hire English majors. They want employees who can analyze problems, think up creative answers, and communicate those answers to coworkers. And an English degree teaches you to do all these things. You’ll earn lots of money. Well, maybe not as much as science graduates, but the 201 201 Payscale College Salary Report listed salaries for popular careers for English majors that ranged from $ to $ . 5- 6 40,000 76,000 You’ll move up the company ladder. Your English major taught you how to analyze problems, think creatively, synthesize intelligent solutions, and communicate those solutions to your bosses and coworkers.

  • Kevin Costner, America's Teacher
H-Announce CFP Extended: Kevin Costner, America's Teacher Announcement published by Edward Janak on Monday, June 8, 2020 Type: Call for Papers Date: June 5, 2020 to August 30, 2020 Location: United States Subject Fields: Cultural History / Studies, Film and Film History, Humanities, Public History, Teaching and Learning Call for Proposals: Kevin Costner: America’s Teacher Deadline for Abstracts Extended We are looking for chapter proposals for an edited collection on Kevin Costner examining the role of/potential of/problematization of Costner in educational settings domestically and abroad. Costner’s career is a myriad of successes and failures. In the past 35 years, his movies grossed 2 billion dollars in ticket sales worldwide and he has he won/been nominated for several Academy Awards; he also experienced critical and box office failures with Waterworld and the Postman. However, in the past 20 years Costner has been able to reinvent himself as a versatile character actor appearing in leading roles in films as well as on cable (Hatfields & McCoys, Yellowstone) and streaming (The Highwaymen) television platforms. He has also become a quiet, but notable, philanthropist, giving both his time and money. Through the films in his oeuvre, Kevin Costner has been teaching audiences around the world about the United States--its history, people and culture. Some viewers and scholars recognize this as positive, others as problematic. This book will serve as a place for teachers and scholars to explore ways in which Costner may be tapped for research and teaching purposes at all levels of education, including problematizing his oeuvre.

  • The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson
The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone. Date of review: Thursday the 12th of October, 2006. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world.

  • The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway  by Nate Jones
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway By Nate Jones Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than. In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter. Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012'sLes Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative.
