The Book of Isaiah Overview “When Scripture Speaks, God Speaks.” — Augustine Background and Genre: • Isaiah is one of the Major Prophets writing around 740 BC. • Isaiah is the third-largest written book, behind Jeremiah and the Psalms. • The book of Isaiah is itself the major source of its information. • Background material is contained in 2 Kings 15-21 and 2 Chronicles 26-33. • Contemporary prophets were Amos and Hosea, prophets to the Northern Kingdom. • Isaiah and Micah wrote to the Southern Kingdom of Judah. • He prophesied during the reign of Uzziah (or Azariah as noted in 2 Kings), Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. • Jewish tradition informs us that Isaiah was probably an aristocrat because of his easy access to Kings. “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub.” Isaiah 7:3 Theology: “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day, and repentance for forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.” Luke 24:46-48 God • Isaiah proclaims an awesome God, dwelling in a high and holy place. “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.’” Isaiah 57:15 • He has a plan for the whole world, and is sovereign, even to the last detail of creation and the plan for redemption. -

Isaiah 62:1-5 Every So Often We Hear the Rumors That Jesus Was Married
Sermon Lesson: Isaiah 62:1-5 Every so often we hear the rumors that Jesus was married. A number of years ago, there was a bestselling book and a hit movie in which Jesus was secretly married to Mary Magdalene. Supposedly, they had a child, whose bloodline still exists today and the church has covered it up for centuries. It’s just not true. The Bible gives no indication that Jesus was married, but plenty of evidence to the contrary. It’s not that Jesus took a vow of celibacy thinking that it’s more pleasing to God to remain single than to get married. From Bethlehem, he had the world’s salvation in mind and wouldn’t be distracted from that goal. But that doesn’t mean Jesus looked down on marriage, either. He took time out of his busy schedule to attend the wedding at Cana and blessed it with his first miracle. Throughout Scripture he pictures his relationship with his people as that of a husband and wife. Today, through Isaiah, the Lord tells us that he Takes Pride in his Bride. She is the crown of his splendor and is called by a new name. Isaiah gives us the maiden name of Christ’s bride: “Zion and Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, of course, was the capital city of Israel and the home of God’s temple. Zion was one of the hills on which Jerusalem was built. With unbridled enthusiasm the Lord declares that he “will not keep silent” about the righteousness and purity of his people. His beautiful bride shines like a gorgeous sunrise or like a blazing torch cutting through the darkness of night. -

Turn back there, now to Isa. 50. – We are continuing our special 4-part Easter study in Isaiah’s famous Servant Songs. – These are 4 prophetic portraits of our Messiah, Jesus, written 7 centuries before Jesus’ was born! – I’ve had such a great time studying these prophecies for the first time. – I’ve been blown away at these unique windows into the mind & heart of our Lord, glimpses of Christ found nowhere else – not in the Four Gospels, nor in any other part of Scripture. Few people can get me into the right Easter mood better than a dead German friend of mine from the 18 th century: George Freideric Handel, composer of the breathtaking oratorio entitled, “Messiah”. It might interest you to know that Handel composed his “Messiah” when he was at his lowest point in life. – His opera company had just gone bankrupt, he had suffered a mild stroke, and his music was causing conflict and outrage in England where he was living at the time. At this dark time in his life, Handel was visited by his friend Charles Jennens. – Jennens had written a work about Christ’s life and His work of redemption, for the purpose of challenging the deists of the day. – The entire text of Jennen’s work was taken straight from Scripture, mostly from Isaiah. – Would the discouraged, depressed Handel take on such a task? He wasted no time. -

Isaiah 50-55 Part 2 QUESTIONS 1. We saw last time that there were various sources in ancient Jewish thought anticipating something like a suffering messiah, but that it was likely not the dominant view. Jesus repeatedly predicted his own suffering and death (Mk 8:31; 9:12; Lk 17:25; 22:15; 24:26, 46), e.g.: He said to them, ‘How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Lk 24:25-27) Jesus specifically named himself as fulfilling Isa 53:12 when he said in Lk 22:37, “It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” The disciples anticipated a very different messiah1 (Mk 9:9; Lk 24:25-26), as demonstrated by passages like Mt 16:21-22: From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, ‘God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.’ In Lk 24:25-27 above, Jesus shows that he reads the Scriptures as predicting a suffering messiah. -

Wednesday in Holy Week April 8, 2020 RCL: Isaiah 50:4-9a; Psalm 70; Hebrews 12:1-3; John 13:21-32 Isaiah 50:4-9a Deutero-Isaiah (or “Second Isaiah”) is believed to be the author of chapters 40-55 of the book of Isaiah. The author is writing during the time of the fall of Babylon, the empire that had destroyed the Temple and sent the people of God into exile. This reading is connected to the servant, a recurring figure in Isaiah who is believed to be Israel. The previous prophets, Amos, Hosea, and Jeremiah had called Israel to repentance for not being faithful to their covenant with God. Deutero-Isaiah focuses on the restoration of God’s people and encourages them to not grow weary as the God of Israel is trustworthy and faithful. • In verse 4, the author credits God for giving him the ability to “sustain the weary with a word.” Who is weary in your world? How can you use your words to sustain those around you? Psalm 70 A lament is defined as a passionate expression of grief or sorrow. Psalm 70 is an individual lament psalm. The author pleads for God’s deliverance. We don’t have details about what situation the author is facing, but many of us can relate to feeling poor and needy, as in verse 5. Our American society is generally allergic to lament. We seek distraction, numbing, and avoidance rather than facing our fear, grief, and loss. This psalm gives us words to lament to God, even if we aren’t sure if our problem qualifies. -

YHVH’s Servant A Literary Analysis of Isaiah YHVH’s Servant • If we want to understand and correctly interpret the book of Isaiah in its proper context, we need to understand much of its literary structure. • The Literary Structure of the Old Testament A Commentary on Genesis - Malachi is the main source for the literary structure of Isaiah in this presentation. 2 YHVH’s Servant • I have made a few modifications to the chiasms from this book, as I have seen fit, for this presentation. • However, most of the summary structures are intact. 3 YHVH’s Servant • Isaiah is really a chiasm composed of multiple layers of chiasms and numerous parallels or couplets that can cause the average reader to get lost in a fog. • There are at least 3 and sometimes 4 levels of chiasms in Isaiah, which contribute to this fog. 4 YHVH’s Servant In this presentation, we will: 1 Look at the overall structure of Isaiah; 2 Look the secondary and some tertiary chiasms in Isaiah; 3 Focus our attention on the portions related to YHVH’s servants to properly identify the servants of YHVH in Isaiah. 5 1 YHVH’s Servant • The following chiasm contains a broad overview of the entire book of Isaiah. • It is the primary chiasm for Isaiah. 6 1 YHVH’s Servant The Book of Isaiah A1 Message of condemnation, pleading, and future restoration (1:1-12:6).
