  • Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage
Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.

  • RADIO's DIGITAL DILEMMA: BROADCASTING in the 21St
RADIO’S DIGITAL DILEMMA: BROADCASTING IN THE 21st CENTURY BY JOHN NATHAN ANDERSON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor John C. Nerone, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Michelle Renee Nelson Associate Professor Christian Edward Sandvig Professor Daniel Toby Schiller ii ABSTRACT The interaction of policy and technological development in the era of “convergence” is messy and fraught with contradictions. The best expression of this condition is found in the story behind the development and proliferation of digital audio broadcasting (DAB). Radio is the last of the traditional mass media to navigate the convergence phenomenon; convergence itself has an inherently disruptive effect on traditional media forms. However, in the case of radio, this disruption is mostly self-induced through the cultivation of communications policies which thwart innovation. A dramaturgical analysis of digital radio’s technological and policy development reveals that the industry’s preferred mode of navigating the convergence phenomenon is not designed to provide the medium with a realistically useful path into a 21st century convergent media environment. Instead, the diffusion of “HD Radio” is a blocking mechanism proffered to impede new competition in the terrestrial radio space. HD Radio has several critical shortfalls: it causes interference and degradation to existing analog radio signals; does not have the capability to actually advance the utility of radio beyond extant quality/performance metrics; and is a wholly proprietary technology from transmission to reception.

  • University Radio Stations Serving the Wider Community, Using Case Studies from the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States
“YOU’RE IN THE RADIO LAB!” - UNIVERSITY RADIO STATIONS SERVING THE WIDER COMMUNITY, USING CASE STUDIES FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM, AUSTRALIA AND THE UNITED STATES JANEY GORDON UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE PROJECT LEADER RADIO LAB0 Introduction In a number of areas globally, the development of what has come to be known as ‘commu- nity’ radio has occurred in many forums, such as ICT centres, community groups, churches or social clubs. However a number of countries have found universities to be natural hosts for the early development of this type of broadcasting. This has occurred in some areas due to radical political changes, for example in the ex communist country of Hungary (Velics, 2012) or the newly democratised state of Uruguay (Light, 2012), and the university has been regarded as a ‘neutral’ area.In other countries, universities have had a keyplace in the development, formation and sustainability of this sector of broadcasting, notably the United States, Australia and latterly the United Kingdom. Community radio may be seen as a natural development of what happens in universities anyway, - experimentation into the physics of broadcasting, a commitment by politically active academics and students to use radio to provide alternative views and culture to the mainstream media andthe enhancement of education using broadcasting technologies. There are also pragmatic reasons for universities to host community radio stations. A uni- versity is a semi-public site, the university authorities can welcome external visitors but also provide some restrictions and security to access if needed. A university frequently occupies large premises that may be able to find space for a fledgling community radio station and its volunte- ers.

Birth of Our Lady, Queen of You and Me “Through her birth, the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.” -St. Augustine of Hippo Once in a great while, once or twice a generation, an event so major occurs that it crystallizes the memory that surrounds it. Stories begin with “where were you when (fill in the blank) happened…” For many, such dates are never forgotten, such as: •November 22, 1963: John F. Kennedy’s assassination •October 17, 1989: World Series earthquake •September 11, 2001:Terrorist attacks The events we remember most may depend on where in the world or country we were. These events bore significance in political, moral and economic realms, but personally they may have left us feeling void and empty.
