The Lies Behind The SECTION D FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016 SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL sports VOL 15, ISSUE 4 thePINNACLE Parks and Rec basketball provides fun, non-competitive atmosphere for players Connor Duggan Staff Writer In a basketball league where half- court shots are the norm, and boys with no basketball background turn into junkies, the Bend Parks and Recreation Basketball League triggers a competitive few months among Storm athletes. Two different leagues are open, one for freshman and sophomores and the other for juniors and seniors. These leagues are populated by students from all of the three local high schools. “Our numbers have been growing slowly over the years, especially after we decided to make two different leagues. This year is our largest year with around 135 participants,” said Parks and Rec. basketball organizer Greg Brady. The drafting process for the league is relatively simple. Each student has an opportunity to be the captain of a team, as long as he can sink a free throw. Whoever makes the first free throw gets first pick and the pattern continues until every team has a captain. There are six total teams in both leagues, all named after college mascots in Oregon. Once players are selected to a team and there is no one left to draft, athletes are pulled off the waiting list and placed on teams that are lower in numbers. Each team is largely made up of athletes from the same school because groups of friends tend to select each other. The teams pick two of their own coaches, who are usually friends from their respective school. Typically the coaches are athletes playing on their school’s junior varsity or varsity squad because they are not allowed to play on The Lies Parks and Recreation teams. The coaches wear shirts with printed ties and team slogans on the back. They have to wear the shirt in order to be on the bench. Coaches also have to figure out how to give each player equal playing Behind The time between the two running halves. Each game has 20 minute halves with a running clock, unless the teams are within 10 points of each other. The clock will only stop if a coach calls a time out. NFL Coaches for every team are given three time outs for the entire game, unless the game goes into overtime. If this occurs, Photo Illustration by Aiden Ullman they are given one additional time out. “I wanted to get into the coaching COMMENTARY business because I felt that it was my Colin Burdsall spend hundreds, if not thousands, of This campaign attracted supporters, time to give back to the Parks and Rec. Growth Mindset Assemblies (5) Excellence – Usain Bolt Who has heard the name Usain Bolt before? Who can do his lightning bolt celebration? The fastest man on earth is known the world over. He has always strived for excellence and shows no sign of stopping. When Usain started school he was much more interested in cricket and football, but his cricket coach noticed how fast he was and sent him in the direction of the running track, a move that would change the face of world athletics forever. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Jamaican sprinter broke the world and Olympic records in both the100 and 200 metre events. He also set a 4×100 metre relay record with the Jamaican team, making him the first man to win three sprinting events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984. But Usain believed he could do even better. He set himself new goals and wanted to set new records. In 2009 he did just that, breaking his own 100 and 200 metre world records. After all his success, people questioned if he would have enough hunger and drive to repeat his heroics when the Olympics came around again. (Play youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O7K-8G2nwU) At London 2012, after months of dedicated training, Usain once again stormed his way to gold medals in the 100 and 200 metres, gathering millions of more fans with his confidence and charm. He inspired his Jamaican teammates to rise to the occasion too as they once again took the 4x100 metre gold.

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, March 25, 2020 * The Boston Globe Red Sox minor leaguer tests positive for coronavirus Julian McWilliams The Red Sox announced Tuesday night that a minor leaguer had tested positive for COVID-19. The player’s positive test occurred March 23 following his return home. The Sox said he was last at Fenway South March 15. The Red Sox kept the player’s name confidential and believe he contracted the virus after leaving spring training. As a precaution, the Red Sox decided to shut down all activity at Fenway South for at least two weeks. The facility will undergo a deep cleaning to disinfect the area. The Sox have instructed all players who came in close contact with the minor leaguer to self-quarantine for two weeks. Manager Ron Roenicke noted during a conference call last week that most of the major league players had returned home, but approximately eight to 15 players stayed back to work out. During that call, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said although a player hadn’t tested positive for the virus to that point, he knew it was a possibility. “That’s something we’re being very vigilant in monitoring,” Bloom said. “You look around and where this is going, obviously we know that it’s very, very possible that it’s going to happen at some point. We’re just trying to make sure everyone is educated and, again, stay in touch with everybody.” A new group is advocating for minor leaguers to be paid above the poverty line Michael Silverman A new group thinks minor league baseball players ought to earn a salary above the poverty line.

  • 3. Olympic Stadiums
    3. Olympic stadiums We have included eight Olympic stadiums in the study and we have chosen to include venues for the Summer and Winter Games as well as stadiums that have been constructed as a consequence of an Olympic bid from a candidate city which ended up not being awarded the Olympic Games. As the figures below show, the main stadiums for the Summer Olympics are much more expensive to construct and modernise than the corresponding venues for the Olympic Winter Games. The total costs of the Olympic stadiums are just over $2 bn. giving an average price of close to $270 million per venue. Figure 3.1: Construction price Olympic stadiums 1996-2010 (million dollars) Contruction Price Turner Field 346 Nagano Olympic Stadium 107 ANZ Stadium 583 Rice-Eccles Stadium 67 Olympic Stadium Spiros Louis 373 Beijing National Stadium 428 BC Place 104 Atatürk Olympic Stadium 144 0 200 400 600 800 All prices in 2010 dollar value Figure 3.2: Price per seat Olympic stadiums 1996-2010 (dollars) Price per Seat 8000 6908 6978 7000 5361 6000 5355 5000 3571 4000 3000 1448 1905 1879 2000 1000 0 Turner Field Nagano ANZ Rice-Eccles Olympic Beijing BC Place Atatürk Olympic Stadium Stadium Stadium National Olympic Stadium Spiros Louis Stadium Stadium All prices in 2010 dollar value 17 One of the explanations why the stadiums for the Olympic Summer Games are more expensive to construct is that the capacity in general is significantly higher for those venues than for the Winter Olympic venues. Often it is also necessary for the hosts of the summer Olympics to build a main stadium, because the majority of the candidate cities do not have a stadium which is big enough and provides running tracks.
