SECTION D FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2016 SUMMIT HIGH SCHOOL sports VOL 15, ISSUE 4 thePINNACLE Parks and Rec basketball provides fun, non-competitive atmosphere for players Connor Duggan Staff Writer In a basketball league where half- court shots are the norm, and boys with no basketball background turn into junkies, the Bend Parks and Recreation Basketball League triggers a competitive few months among Storm athletes. Two different leagues are open, one for freshman and sophomores and the other for juniors and seniors. These leagues are populated by students from all of the three local high schools. “Our numbers have been growing slowly over the years, especially after we decided to make two different leagues. This year is our largest year with around 135 participants,” said Parks and Rec. basketball organizer Greg Brady. The drafting process for the league is relatively simple. Each student has an opportunity to be the captain of a team, as long as he can sink a free throw. Whoever makes the first free throw gets first pick and the pattern continues until every team has a captain. There are six total teams in both leagues, all named after college mascots in Oregon. Once players are selected to a team and there is no one left to draft, athletes are pulled off the waiting list and placed on teams that are lower in numbers. Each team is largely made up of athletes from the same school because groups of friends tend to select each other. The teams pick two of their own coaches, who are usually friends from their respective school. Typically the coaches are athletes playing on their school’s junior varsity or varsity squad because they are not allowed to play on The Lies Parks and Recreation teams. The coaches wear shirts with printed ties and team slogans on the back. They have to wear the shirt in order to be on the bench. Coaches also have to figure out how to give each player equal playing Behind The time between the two running halves. Each game has 20 minute halves with a running clock, unless the teams are within 10 points of each other. The clock will only stop if a coach calls a time out. NFL Coaches for every team are given three time outs for the entire game, unless the game goes into overtime. If this occurs, Photo Illustration by Aiden Ullman they are given one additional time out. “I wanted to get into the coaching COMMENTARY business because I felt that it was my Colin Burdsall spend hundreds, if not thousands, of This campaign attracted supporters, time to give back to the Parks and Rec.
