Commencement Program, 2019
263 rd COMMENCEMENT MAY 20, 2019 20, MAY R D COMMENCEME 263 NT CLA S S O F 2 019 M A Y 20, 20 1 9 CLASS OF 2019 KEEPING FRANKLIN’S PROMISE In the words of one elegiac tribute, “Great men have two lives: one which occurs while they work on this earth; a second which begins at the day of their death and continues as long as their ideas and conceptions remain powerful.” These words befit the great Benjamin Franklin, whose inventions, innovations, ideas, writings, and public works continue to shape our thinking and renew the Republic he helped to create and the institutions he founded, including the University of Pennsylvania. Nowhere does Franklin feel more contemporary, more revolutionary, and more alive than at the University of Pennsylvania. His startling vision of a secular, nonsectarian Academy that would foster an “Inclination join’d with an Ability to serve Mankind, one’s Country, Friends and Family” has never ceased to challenge Penn to redefine the scope and mission of the modern American university. When pursued vigorously and simultaneously, the two missions – developing the inclination to do good and the ability to do well – merge to help form a more perfect university that educates more capable citizens for our democracy. Penn has embodied and advanced Franklin’s revolutionary vision for 279 years. Throughout its history, Penn has extended the frontiers of higher learning and research to produce graduates and scholars whose work has enriched the nation and all of humanity. The modern liberal arts curriculum as we know it can trace its roots to Franklin’s innovation to have Penn students study international commerce and foreign languages. -
Racing Racing Foundation for Masters Athletes
Faster Five Racing Racing foundation for masters athletes The Faster Five Racing document details how to improve your racing skills. Also included in this document is information about planning a 1000-meter race, and racing inspiration from Olympic singles champion, Xeno Müller. The following five parts provide the foundation of Faster Masters racing: ● Racing and speedwork ● Exercises for speedwork and starts ● Planning your race ● The anatomy of a race: Xeno Müller’s Olympic gold ● Faster Five pieces of advice Racing and speedwork The main purpose in doing speedwork is to help us work a little bit faster than base pace. We need to develop speedwork, for example, if we’re going to perfect our final sprint in a 1000-meter race, or if we’re rowing a short race like a 500-meter dash. Speedwork isn't intended to raise our base pace, which is our average pace for the middle of the race. Raising base pace is accomplished through endurance work. But there are times when we have to make transitions and raise stroke rates when we have to push, such as, the final 150 or 200 meters. At that part of the race, you’re fatigued, so in order to maintain or gain speed, you have to be able to go above the base pace. Most often we do speedwork faster than we do our regular base race pace. You wouldn’t row your whole race at this pace. You have to learn how to make transitions so that you can raise your stroke rate effectively. Ideally, when your stroke rate goes up, your speed goes up. -

A Case Study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth Sculling Champion Peter Antonie
A CASE STUDY OF OLYMPIC, WORLD AND COMMONWEALTH SCULLING CHAMPION PETER ANTONIE A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS, SPORTS HUMANITIES/MEDIA, DIVISION OF HEALTH, DESIGN AND SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA ROBIN POKE AUGUST 2006 ii Abstract This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years – from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australia’s greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature – widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonie’s reputation, particularly as it compares with his better- known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport. -

Pressemitteilung Peter-Michael Kolbe: 50 Jahre „An Bord“
Pressemitteilung 30. -

CANOTTAGGIO Enciclopedia Dello Sport Di Bruno Marchesi
Scesero in gara solamente equipaggi maschili. -
