The bridge there is the actual “Bridge Too Far” from the famous 1970’s movie. We’ll continue on along the Rhine to Nijmegen, known more recently as the birthplace of the Van Halen brothers, but in World War II the location of another crucial bridge from “Operation Market Garden.” Here, we’ll have a battlefield tour, visit the Freedom Museum, and have a vineyard tour and wine tasting. Return to Amsterdam for dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 8– AMSTERDAM: After breakfast, the day is at leisure to enjoy this amazing European city. Three sightseeing suggestions would be a visit to the Anne Frank House, the massive Rijksmuseum with its stunning collection of art, or a visit to (and tour of) the Heineken Brewery. All are quite centrally located. Another option would be to travel the canals on any one of the many public boats that ply the canals performing public transportation much like our subways do. Wageningen UR, 2011 M.A. Schouten Registration number: 890713747040 Economics and Policy (BEB) Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group Supervisor: prof. dr. W.J.M. Heijman Second supervisor: dr. J.A.C. van Ophem Abstract There are several methods to measure clusters in agribusiness: . Shift share analysis: a method of estimating the competitiveness of a certain area. Location quotient: a tool to measure economic strength of a certain industry in a region. Clustering based on number of farms. Clusters can be identified by type of knowledge: . Factor endowment clusters: clusters that exist because of comparative advantages. Techno clusters: clusters that are based on sharing of knowledge. Historic knowhow-based clusters: clusters that exist because of traditional knowhow advantages. Clusters can be identified by type of development: . Geographical clusters: clustering because of the location or availability of resources. Sectorial clusters: clustering of firms from the same sector. Horizontal clusters: clustering of firms on a horizontal level. Vertical clusters: clustering of firms from the same supply chain. Location quotients agriculture in the Netherlands: According to location quotients calculation (based on number of jobs in agriculture and number of farms) agriculture is overrepresented in the less urbanized and more remote parts of the Netherlands with the exception of horticulture; horticulture is mainly located in the urbanized western part of the Netherlands. Cluster analysis based on number of farms in the Netherlands: . Arable farms: mainly located in the provinces Zeeland, Flevoland and Groningen where the soil type is suitable for arable farms.

TULIP TIME, U. S. A.: STAGING MEMORY, IDENTITY AND ETHNICITY IN DUTCH-AMERICAN COMMUNITY FESTIVALS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Terence Guy Schoone-Jongen, M. A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Thomas Postlewait, Advisor Professor Dorothy Noyes Professor Alan Woods Adviser Theatre Graduate Program ABSTRACT Throughout the United States, thousands of festivals, like St. Patrick’s Day in New York City or the Greek Festival and Oktoberfest in Columbus, annually celebrate the ethnic heritages, values, and identities of the communities that stage them. Combining elements of ethnic pride, nostalgia, sentimentality, cultural memory, religous values, political positions, economic motive, and the spirit of celebration, these festivals are well-organized performances that promote a community’s special identity and heritage. At the same time, these festivals usually reach out to the larger community in an attempt to place the ethnic community within the American fabric. These festivals have a complex history tied to the “melting pot” history of America. Since the twentieth century many communities and ethnic groups have struggled to hold onto or reclaim a past that gradually slips away. Ethnic heritage festivals are one prevalent way to maintain this receding past. And yet such ii festivals can serve radically different aims, socially and politically. In this dissertation I will investigate how these festivals are presented and why they are significant for both participants and spectators. I wish to determine what such festivals do and mean. I will examine five Dutch American festivals, three of which are among the oldest ethnic heritage festivals in the United States.

  • The Sapling Project
The Sapling Project http://annefranktreeusa.com/ From her only window to the outside world, Anne Frank could see the sky, birds and a majestic chestnut tree. “As long as this exists”, Anne wrote in her diary, “how can I be sad?” During the two years she spent in the Secret Annex, the solace Anne found in her chestnut tree provided a powerful contrast to the Holocaust unfolding beyond her attic window. And as war narrowed in on Anne and her family, her tree became a vivid reminder that a better world was possible. Anne’s tree would outlive its namesake by more than 50 years, before being weakened by disease and succumbing to a windstorm in 2010. But today, thanks to dozens of saplings propagated in the months before its death, Anne’s tree lives on in cities and towns around the world. Here in the United States, the Sapling Project is bringing eleven of these precious trees to specially selected locations across the country. As the saplings take root, they will emerge as living monuments to Anne’s pursuit of peace and tolerance. In the process, they will serve as powerful reminders of the horrors borne by hate and bigotry and the need for collective action in the face of injustice. The Tree in Anne’s Diary During a speech delivered in 1968, Anne’s father, Otto Frank, reflected on just how important Anne’s tree was to his youngest daughter. “How could I have known”, he asked “how much it meant to Anne to see a patch of blue sky, to observe the seagulls as they flew, and how important the chestnut tree was for her, when I think that she never showed any interest in nature”.

  • Britain and the Dutch Revolt 1560–1700 Hugh Dunthorne Frontmatter More Information
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-83747-7 - Britain and the Dutch Revolt 1560–1700 Hugh Dunthorne Frontmatter More information Britain and the Dutch Revolt 1560–1700 England’s response to the Revolt of the Netherlands (1568–1648) has been studied hitherto mainly in terms of government policy, yet the Dutch struggle with Habsburg Spain affected a much wider commu- nity than just the English political elite. It attracted attention across Britain and drew not just statesmen and diplomats but also soldiers, merchants, religious refugees, journalists, travellers and students into the confl ict. Hugh Dunthorne draws on pamphlet literature to reveal how British contemporaries viewed the progress of their near neigh- bours’ rebellion, and assesses the lasting impact which the Revolt and the rise of the Dutch Republic had on Britain’s domestic history. The book explores affi nities between the Dutch Revolt and the British civil wars of the seventeenth century – the fi rst major challenges to royal authority in modern times – showing how much Britain’s chang- ing commercial, religious and political culture owed to the country’s involvement with events across the North Sea. HUGH DUNTHORNE specializes in the history of the early modern period, the Dutch revolt and the Dutch republic and empire, the his- tory of war, and the Enlightenment. He was formerly Senior Lecturer in History at Swansea University, and his previous publications include The Enlightenment (1991) and The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Britain and the Low Countries

  • The Art Market in the Dutch Golden
The Art Market in the Dutch Art 1600–1700 Dutch Golden Age The first great free market economy for art This painting is occurred in the Dutch Republic of the 1600s. an example of the This republic was the most wealthy and “history painting” urbanized nation at the time. Its wealth was category. based on local industries such as textiles and breweries and the domination of the global trade market by the Dutch East India Company. This economic power translated into a sizeable urban middle class with disposable income to purchase art. As a result of the Protestant Reformation, and the absence of liturgical painting in the Protestant Church, religious patronage was no longer a major source of income for artists. Rather than working on commission, artists sold their paintings on an open market in bookstores, fairs, and through dealers. (c o n t i n u e d o n b a c k ) Jan Steen (Dutch, 1626–1679). (c o n t i n u e d f r o m f r o n t ) This open market led to the rise in five major categories of painting: history painting, portraiture, scenes of everyday life, landscapes, and still-life paintings. The most prized, most expensive, and often largest in scale were history or narrative paintings, often with biblical or allegorical themes.

PhD Thesis Wageningen Agricultural University, Wageningen, the Netherlands With references - With summary in English and Dutch - 173 pp. ISBN 90-5485-8524 Bibliographic abstract Rhizoctonia disease causes severe losses during the production cycle of tulip. The complex nature of the disease requires a precise characterization of the causal pathogens. Typical bare patches are caused by R. solaniA G 2-t. Bulb rot symptoms are, apart from AG 2-t isolates, caused by R. solaniA G 5. AG 4 isolates seem of little importance in field-grown tulips. Anastomosis behaviour showed AG 2-t to be a homogeneous group, closely related to the heterogeneous group of AG 2-1 isolates. Pectic enzyme patterns discriminated tulip infecting AG 2-t isolates from AG 2 isolates not pathogenic to tulip. Geographically separated AG 2-t and AG 2-1 isolates, both pathogenic to tulip, differ in nucleotide number and sequence of ITS rDNA.
