The NHL Stats and Information Team Reminisces on Memorable Moments and Achievements of the Past Decade The NHL Stats and Information team reminisces on memorable moments and achievements of the past decade. “The Goalies” recaps some of the top goaltending performances of the 2010s. Tim Thomas Thomas won his second Vezina Trophy in 2011 after also winning both the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy that year. He posted a .940 save percentage in the 2011 Playoffs, tied for the fourth- highest on record for a single postseason (min. 20 GP). Henrik Lundqvist Lundqvist claimed the Vezina Trophy in 2011-12 after posting a career-high 39 wins. He posted the third-most wins this decade (299) to climb from 89th place (159) to fifth place (458) on the NHL’s all- time wins list during the 2010s. Sergei Bobrovsky Bobrovsky is the only goaltender to win the Vezina Trophy twice during the 2010s, claiming his first in 2012-13 on the strength of a career-high .932 save percentage and again in 2016-17 following a career-best 41 wins. Martin Brodeur Brodeur posted both the final win and final shutout of his NHL career on Dec. 29, 2014 while playing with the Blues - his only season not in a Devils uniform. He played one more game after that before retiring with 691 wins and 125 shutouts during the regular season – both NHL records. Braden Holtby Holtby won the Vezina Trophy in 2015-16 after matching Martin Brodeur’s single-season NHL record with 48 wins. He had three seasons of 40+ wins this decade, tied with Pekka Rinne for the most in the 2010s. Carey Price After leading Canada to a World Cup of Hockey title, Price translated his success to the 2016-17 season with a 10-0-0 start – an NHL record for longest season-opening win streak by a goaltender. The 2010s also saw Price capture the Vezina Trophy in 2014-15 after he posted a franchise-record 44 wins. Pekka Rinne After guiding the Predators to their first-ever Stanley Cup Final in 2017, Rinne posted a 42-win season in 2017-18 to claim the Vezina Trophy. He was a runaway winner and the third Finnish-born goaltender to capture the award, joining Miikka Kiprusoff (2005-06) and Tuukka Rask (2013-14). Marc-Andre Fleury Fleury led all goaltenders in regular-season wins over the past decade (321). He is one of four goaltenders with multiple Stanley Cup wins in the 2010s; only three netminders have more than his 47 playoff wins in that span. Jordan Binnington Binnington, a catalyst of the Blues’ historic turnaround in 2018-19, went 24-5-1 as a rookie with a .927 save percentage, five shutouts and an NHL-leading 1.89 goals-against average (min. 25 GP). He then became the first rookie in NHL history to earn 16 wins en route to capturing a Stanley Cup. Roberto Luongo Luongo announced his retirement just before 2019-20, ending his 19-season NHL career with the second-most regular-season games played among goaltenders (1,044) and the third-most wins (489). He also retired among the top 10 in regular season shutouts (9th; 77) and save percentage (t- 9th; .919). .

  • Vision Training for Goaltenders It's Hard to Imagine Any NHL Goalie
Vision training for Goaltenders It's hard to imagine any NHL goalie getting ready to play or practice without a series of dynamic stretches and movements designed to warm up the key muscles required to stop pucks. For many goalies, though, the most important muscles are in their head. "Your biggest muscle as a goalie is your eyes," Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby said. "I do a lot of visual training in my pregame routine to warm up my eyes and keep them sharp. If you're not seeing it, nothing else matters. Your eyes are the basis of your whole game." Whether it's bouncing balls off a wall or standing at the bench hours before the game with his eyes darting around an empty arena, warming up the eyes is a big part of Holtby's well-documented pregame routine. He's hardly the only one. Spend enough time in the bowels of NHL arenas before a game and you will see goalies juggling as often as stretching. "I use it as a warmup for my eyes just to get my focus and concentration going, watching the ball spin, watching it into my hand," said Richard Bachman, who has seen time with the Vancouver Canucks this season in addition to playing in the American Hockey League. "I try to incorporate the vision and tracking that I use on the ice with a tennis ball." Increasingly, that focus on being able to better focus the eyes is extending beyond warmups as more NHL goalies, coaches and even teams add vision training to their offseason.

Henrik Lundqvist is determined to stay the course and do all he can. It’s often said that “sports do not build character, they reveal it,” meaning that it was there all along and it wasn’t developed over time. When it comes to Henrik Lundqvist, there are few characters more seminal to the arch of New York Rangers’ history. From the very beginning of his tenure in net, the Swede has carried the hopes and dreams of an entire city on his shoulders every single time he skates out to the Seventh Avenue end of Madison Square Garden. The goaltender is on his fourth coach, captain and second general manager, even when the times are changing, there is one constant for the organization.

  • Turnbull Hockey Pool For
Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. Prizes: > Grand Prize awarded to contestant whose team accumulates the most points over the regular NHL season = 10" Samsung Galaxy Tablet > Monthly Prizes awarded to the contestants whose teams accumulate the most points over each designated period (see website) = Two Movie Passes How it Works: > Everyone in the community is welcome to join in on the fun.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 31, 2015 Capitals score 4 in third, rally for 5-2 win over Sabres By Jeff Seidel AP December 31, 2015 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals entered the third period Wednesday night with key players injured, missing good scoring chances and trailing by a goal. Then Alex Ovechkin scored twice during a four-goal rally and the Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-2 to extend their winning streak to nine games and overtake the Dallas Stars for the NHL points lead. "Tonight, you saw some backbone when it was needed," Washington coach Barry Trotz said. "It (was) an opportunity for guys to step up and they did. There wasn't any excuses." The four-goal third period came after the team lost forward Jay Beagle to an upper-body injury and center Nicklas Backstrom to an unspecific injury in the second period. Beagle will undergo surgery and miss significant time. Backstrom's injury was not disclosed and he could play Thursday at the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington already was playing without top defenseman John Carlson, out with a lower-body injury. Despite that, the Capitals turned around Buffalo's 2-1 lead quickly. "We are pretty relentless as a team," Washington goalie Braden Holtby said. "(Obviously, the injuries) makes it tougher. Those guys play a huge role on our team but we are just going to have to find different ways to win if they are out. " Trotz shifted Marcus Johansson from left wing to center and moved Evgeny Kuznetsov to center on the top line.
