  • L'atelier Du Canut Lyonnais

  • Taxes, National Identity, and Nation Building: Evidence from France∗
Taxes, National Identity, and Nation Building: Evidence from France∗ Noel D. Johnsony George Mason University This Version: October 2, 2015 Abstract We show that increases in state capacity can lower the collective action costs associated with political and economic exchange by encouraging the formation of a common identity. We test this by exploiting the fact that the French Monarchy was more successful in substituting its fiscal and legal institutions for those of the medieval seigneurial regime within an area of the country known as the Cinq Grosses Fermes (CGF). Disaggregated data from the 1789 Cahiers de Doléances confirm that regions just inside the CGF were more likely than regions just out- side the CGF to identify themselves with market enhancing national institutions. Key words: Culture; Institutions; State Capacity; Economic Development JEL classification: D03; N43; O43 ∗I am grateful to Saumitra Jha for bringing the data on the Cahiers de Doléances to my attention. John Markoff also very graciously offered assistance in locating data. Werner Troesken provided vital support at the beginning of the project. David Le Bris read and commented on an early draft as well as kindly providing data used in Sections 3 and 6. Nico Voigtländer and Mara Squicciarini provided the data on education drawn from Furet and Ozouf (1977). • The Judicial Court Structure of Sixteenth-Century France
TTJ 16.1 (2013): 34-59 ISSN 1598-7140 The Judicial Court Structure of Sixteenth-Century France Lauren J. Kim Torch Trinity Graduate University, Korea Although there are several books in the French language that outline government institutions during the Ancien Régime—written by established scholars such as Bernard Barbiche and Roger Doucet—an English monograph has yet to be created that discusses the various institutions in sixteenth-century France.1 Institutions, primarily the judicial courts, bound France as a single country tying a provincially segmented people to a single monarch. The diversity of French dialects, local laws, or cultures could not unify the kingdom under a common milieu. This essay is not the place for a detailed translation of immense referential works written by scholars on early modern French institutions. Instead, it will provide a rudimentary overview on the judicial system’s basic bodies in sixteenth-century France. The complex juridical structures will be simplified by discussing basic units and their locations in the kingdom and attempt to explain the layers of justice on a multilevel administrative cake. The purpose of writing this paper is to help my students who lack the language and resources to understand the basic judicial structure in French history. Many of my students have high interests in Huguenot history through the works and missionary heart of John Calvin. However, they find French legal politics extremely complicated. When they read textbooks, these institutions are never discussed as a whole system but in parts. My goal is to simplify their research by discussing the juridical structure.

  • The Huguenots and Henry of Navarre, Vol. 1
THE HUGUENOTS aND Henry of Navarre by HENRY MTBAIRD PROFESSOR IN THE UNIVERSITY OP THE CITY OP NEW YORK ; AUTHOR OP THE HISTORY OP THE RISE OF THE HUGUENOTS OF FRANCE WITH MAPS VOL. I. NEW YORK CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS 1886 THE HUGUENOTS AND HENRY OF NAVARRE Copyright, 188«, by CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS PREFACE. In the History of the Rise of the Huguenots I attempted to trace the progress of the Protestant party in France from the feeble and obscure beginnings of the Reformation to the close of the reign of Charles the Ninth ; when, by reason of heroic struggles, and of the fortitude wherewith persecution and treach ery had been endured, the Huguenots had gained an enviable place in the respect and admiration of Christendom. In the present work I have undertaken to portray the subsequent fort unes of the same valiant people, through a period not less critical and not less replete with varied and exciting incident, down to the formal recognition of their inalienable rights of conscience in a fundamental law of the kingdom, declared to be perpetual and irrevocable. As the Massacre of St. Bartholo mew's Day constituted the most thrilling occurrence related in the former volumes, so in the volumes now offered to the public the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes is the event toward which the action throughout tends, and in relation to which even transactions of little weight in themselves assume importance. A conflict persistently maintained in vindication of an essential principle of morals is always a noble subject of contemplation.

  • Southern French Waldensians and the Albigensian Crusade Abstract This Paper Contributes N
‘Sunt quadraginta anni vel circa’: Southern French Waldensians and the Albigensian Crusade Abstract This paper contributes new evidence and a new perspective to the study of the religious heresy known as Waldensianism in the high-medieval Languedoc, and its relationship to both orthodox authority and the ‘Cathar’ heresy. Although they were outlawed by Rome in 1184, Waldensians were operating openly in the Cathar lands pertaining to the viscounts of Béziers and the counts of Toulouse and Foix-with clerical complicity. This was until the Albi- gensian Crusade (1209-29). Its northern French army attacked Cathars and their noble sup- porters, but began executing Waldensians too. This paper offers a precise chronology and demography for these processes of toleration and persecution. For the first time, it reveals that from 1209, Waldensian refugees re-located beyond the warzone, fleeing to the County of Rodez, the north of the County of Quercy, and the Duchy of Gascony, and were no longer to be found in the Cathar heartlands. In doing this, it sheds light on the wider process of suppressing minority religious groups in the high middle ages, particularly their social and geographical dislocation and assimilation. It also contributes to the related historiographical debate concerning the nature of heresy in medieval Languedoc more generally. 178 words ‘Sunt quadraginta anni vel circa’: Southern French Waldensians and the Albigensian Crusade Medieval Waldensians constituted an important movement of Apostolic Christianity, devot- ed to reforming lay religious practice. They were outlawed as heretical throughout Europe in 1184, but the quotation in the title of this paper-‘It was around forty years ago’- refers to the recollections of inquisitorial witnesses in Languedoc in the mid-1240s, that Waldensians had operated openly in the region as recently as four decades previously.

The Royal Consultants: The Intendants of France and the Bureaucratic Transition in Pre-modern Europe* Yu Sasaki† This version: May 13, 2020 Comments welcome Abstract This article explores the pre-modern French bureaucrats of the intendants as proto-modern bu- reaucrats. Historical research highlights their role in consolidating the state’s authority, but few works provide empirical evidence on the intendants as bureaucrats. My paper fills this gap by constructing a new data set of 430 intendants for the period of their most systematic use from 1640 to 1789. My panel data set comprises the prosopography of nearly universal observa- tions in the period to document evidence on recruitment, promotion, and family backgrounds. My findings indicate that although France relied on the intendants for governance, it did not manage them well as the distribution of service duration and appointment age varies greatly. Dense networks intendants form through kinship and marriage also threaten impersonality. My analysis suggests the difficulty of structuring incentives to follow and implement rules. *I thank seminar participants at Keio University and Kwansei Gakuin University and participants at the 2020 Winter Workshop of the Japan Society for Quantitative Social Science for their constructive feedback to the previous drafts.
