'On Being Held Captive by the Unwelcome Guest'. NCS ‘On being held captive by the unwelcome guest’. NCS practitioners’ experiences of working with the victim-self. Sheila J Peelo Middlesex University and Metanoia Institute Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies 2016 1 ABSTRACT This research was set up in order to examine therapeutic practice with victimisation relating to clients abuse as children. The central concern of the study focused on how the victim aspect of the self, or the ‘victim-self’, impacts therapeutic practice and what the corresponding practitioner response is. This interaction provides clues to the way practitioners construct victimisation and whether this contributes to the client’s victim-self and victimisation. The second important concern of the project was to evaluate the learning achieved through collaborative researching. Taking a participatory action research approach to researching, I set up a co-operative inquiry group with five counsellor/therapist colleagues in the National Counselling Service in Ireland. The inquiry group’s stated aim was to change practice relating to the victim-self presentation. The inquiry and evaluation transcripts were analysed using a constructivist grounded theory method and preliminary findings were presented to the group for consultation and revision, in keeping with the multi-voiced philosophy of co-operative inquiry. Preliminary and intermediate findings were presented to my peers at conference to further develop their credibility and trustworthiness. The findings indicate that practitioners constructed the victim-self as a positional phenomenon, which acts both internally and in the world to protect, defend and control. The victim-self positions frequently exert a bind on practitioner agency resulting in urgent actions. The study revealed that practitioners moved through a stage process in addressing the bind. As a consequence, practitioners found a change in agentic functioning and empathic connection to victimisation. The findings suggest that the victim-self is poorly understood psychologically. Furthermore, there is a gap in awareness about the potential for practitioners to contribute to victimisation and further reduce client agency. It further suggests that therapeutic practitioners require specific forms of supervision in order to manage and transform the impact upon them of victimisation. 2 Acknowledgements To my husband Paul for his love, steadfastness and belief in me. White proposed the study of “historiophoty,” an imagistic alternative to written history. Subsequently, much scholarly attention has been paid to the category of History Film. Yet popular concerns for historical re‐presentation and heritage have not fully addressed aesthetic effects of prior history films and emergent imagistic‐historiographic practices. This dissertation identifies and elaborates one such alternative historiographic practice on film, via inter‐medial study attending to British and American history films, an instance of multi‐platform digital historiography, and an animated film – a category of film often overlooked in history film studies.

    Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62).

    Adrian Paul Botta ([email protected]) Lillian Diana Gish Lillian Diana Gish[1] (October 14, 1893 – February 27, 1993) was an American actress of the screen and stage,[2] as well as a director and writer whose film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912 in silent film shorts to 1987. Gish was called the First Lady of American Cinema, and she is credited with pio - neering fundamental film performing techniques. Gish was a prominent film star of the 1910s and 1920s, partic - ularly associated with the films of director D. W. Griffith, includ - ing her leading role in the highest-grossing film of the silent era, Griffith's seminal The Birth of a Nation (1915). At the dawn of the sound era, she returned to the stage and appeared in film infrequently, including well-known roles in the controversial western Duel in the Sun (1946) and the offbeat thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955). She also did considerable television work from the early 1950s into the 1980s and closed her career playing, for the first time, oppo - site Bette Davis in the 1987 film The Whales of August (which would prove to be one of Davis's last on-screen appearances). Asbahi A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OE PHILOSOPHY August 1973 BOWUNG GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Il ABSTRACT Nine American popular novels that use the Arab-Zionist conflict as a setting were examined in this study with the purpose of determining how objective is the image of the conflict they present. The examination focused on the historical details and the ideological arguments contained in these novels. In order to determine the authenticity of the historical details, they were contrasted with non-fictional historical accounts written by Western, Arab, and Israeli authors. On the other hand, the arguments advanced explicitly or implicitly in the novels were examined to determine the soundness of their historical bases, their logical consistency, their universal applicability, and their fairness in representing the views of the conflicting parties. The study showed that the novels present oversimplified, biased versions of the history of the various developments of the conflict. Due to the omission of certain historical details and the use of others that are highly questionable or definitely inaccurate;; the "history" offered in these novels is unfair to the Arabs. While there is hardly any attempt in the studied novels to represent the Arab point of view, there is an extensive, often zealous, presentation of the Zionist argument. The various arguments advanced to justify the Zionist position, however, are based on the novels’ biased "history" and are characterized by lack of profundity, self-contradiction, and poor logic.

Pickford was intrigued with film acting, and before long she began to enjoy “posing” for motion pictures. She stayed with the Biograph Company, working as both an actress and writer from 1909 to 1911, leaving for a brief stint with the Independent Motion Picture Company (IMP), and later with Majestic Pictures Corporation. She returned to Griffith at Biograph in early 1912, finishing out the year with him.

ABSTRACT Kumu Kahua Theatre is a non-profit theatre company in Honolulu which has been in existence since 1971. It is the only theatre in the world dedicated to producing plays which speak particularly to the multi-ethnic audiences of Hawai‘i. Over the past thirty years Hawaii’s “local” playwrights have benefited from a working relationship with Kumu Kahua Theatre, which has served as an original stage on which they could practice and refine their craft. This dissertation defines what is meant by “local” theatre, and includes a brief historical overview of Haw aii’s socio-political climate and theatrical activities before 1971 to provide a foundation from which to discuss Kumu Kahua Theatre and Hawaii’s contemporary “local” playwrights.
