5 February 2015
5 FEBRUARY 2015 Australian audiences will be able to celebrate an explosive four nights of television with the EastEnders 30th Anniversary premiering on UKTV from March 2 until March 5 at 6.15pm with a special flashback episode on March 4 at 7.25pm. The anniversary week will see a tempestuous week of drama with shocking revelations, story twists that will leave a lump in the throat and moments that will elicit gasps from fans. With storylines culminating and momentous events happening, the EastEnders 30th Anniversary will take its place in television history and change Albert Square forever. Viewers will discover who killed Lucy Beale and have an opportunity to see exactly how and why it happened as EastEnders takes viewers back to the night she was murdered in a flashback special at 7.25pm on Wednesday March 4, directly after an hour-long episode. This episode will fill in the blanks and answer questions that have been haunting the residents of Walford since last year. Hetti Bywater will be reprising her role as Lucy Beale, Tanya Franks returns as Rainie Cross and Jamie Lomas as Jake Stone. The week will also see the return of some of EastEnders most iconic characters. Barbara Windsor will reprise her role as Peggy Mitchell for one episode where she makes a visit to her beloved Queen Victoria. Jo Joyner and John Partridge will also reprise their roles as Tanya Cross and Christian Clarke to attend Ian and Jane’s wedding as part of the celebrations. Tim Christlieb, Acting Director of Channels for BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand, says “UKTV will mark the 30th Anniversary of its flagship series with a heated four nights of thunderous television. -

Annual Review 2009 www.sightsavers.org Registered charity numbers 207544 & SC038110 Contents Introduction 1 Our performance in 2009 2 Preventing and curing blindness 4 Education is for everyone 8 Including everyone 10 Working with communities 12 Long lasting change 14 Where our money is spent 16 Meet the experts 18 Income and expenditure 19 Our supporters 20 Thank you 21 Atul Loke/Panos/Sightsavers Introduction 2009 has been a year of great challenge for everyone, with a deep recession across much of the world. We were very worried at the beginning of the year, so we cut our planned expenditure and were rigorous about cost control. I am so touched that despite the economic conditions, our supporters have come through for us and donations actually increased. Our overall income was hit by reduced legacies, but we ended the year in a far better financial position than I could possibly have hoped. Thank you all so much. This will help us in 2010, which is looking to be just as turbulent – as I write this sterling is plummeting and problems in Europe are creating new worries. Although we cut back somewhat on our spending in 2009, we reached more people than ever before in terms of those we screened and treated, and trained far more eye health workers than in any other year. We are determined to make long lasting change – strengthening the health systems in countries where we work so that eye health services will be embedded and will endure. I visited a number of our programmes this year and am always impressed by the dedication of our staff and our partners – at a time of great uncertainty they work hard to improve the lives of some of the most marginalised people in the world. -

BRINGING ART TO WALES: THE DAVIES SISTERS Saturday, May 24, BBC Two Wales, 7.30pm In the early 1900s, Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, two sisters from Llandinam, Newtown, started to create one of the great British art collections of the 20th century. Ignoring critical derision and following their own taste, they bought controversial Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings including the first Cézanne to be exhibited in Britain and one of the first Van Goghs to enter a British collection. On their deaths, they bequeathed their art to the National Museum Wales as a gift to the nation. In Bringing Art to Wales: The Davies Sisters, presenter Trevor Fishlock explores how the sisters succeeded in building their remarkable, pioneering collection. He considers the paintings that in their time were the ‘shock of the new’. Why was such a painting so upsetting? And how was it that two shy and devout Calvinistic Methodist sisters were drawn to such controversial art? Trevor returns to Gwendoline and Margaret’s family roots to track the source of the wealth that funded their buying and to explore the religious principles and commitment to philanthropy that governed their lives. -
