He married in 1770 and by 1792 had involved himself in religious and social reform to the extent that he was able to organize what became known as, "The African Church." It was also Jones who organized the Black community to serve as nurses and attendants during Philadelphia's severe Yellow Fever epidemic in 1793. In 1797, when the first African Masonic Lodge of Philadelphia was warranted, Absalom Jones was installed as First Worshipful Master and in 1815 he was elected the First Grand Master of the First African Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. During his ministry, Jones never lost his deep conviction that religious and social action go hand in hand. He founded schools for his congregation, helped those in financial distress by creating an insurance company, and supported them in their protes ts against slavery. Jones died at his home at 32 Powell Street in Philadelphia in 1818. The church organization he founded in 1792 is now known as the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas at 361 Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia. Spotti. Spotti’s style is easily recognized after seeing examples of his/her work, and I have a very high regard for the artistry. However at this time, I have no information about Spotti as an artist or individual. I don’t even know what the initial “F” is for. More proof that postcard collecting is a continuous learning process. Some months ago I received six scans from a fellow collector who knows and shares my interest in Spotti’s work. He had just purchased the set. I had seen only one or two of the cards over the years and had no idea who the women were.
