David Frego Graduate Program ABSTRACT Recent sport scholarship has expanded the literature on race and sport beyond African-American experiences to increasingly include those of Asian Americans and Latinos/Latinas. Nonetheless, studies on Japanese American sport have generally focused on Japanese American participation in baseball and internment camp recreation/ sporting practices. Though illuminating previously untold aspects of sport history, the aforementioned studies focus on an especially dramatic and painful moment in Japanese American history. Meanwhile examinations of Hawai’ian sport have looked at what might be labeled “native” activities like surfing and swimming without exploring sport within different immigrant groups. In contrast, this paper examines American football, a non-native mainland sport within the context of everyday plantation/cannery life in pre- and post-World War II Kaua’i. The Barefoot Leagues consisted of loosely affiliated teams from various towns on the island of Kaua’i. Participants played football in their bare feet: in part because they rarely wore shoes -- in part because as field and cannery workers, they could not afford athletic gear. The leagues drew players from a range of ages and ethnicities provided they could meet the weight limits of 115 to 135 pounds. -

The art gallery, sports and pornography offered socially sanctio ned or cordo ned-off images, but the cinema, the major visual narrative form of the twentieth century, only did so in particular cases. This was not so with non -white male bodies. In the Western, the plantation drama and the jungle adventure film, the non -white body is routinely on display. Dance numbers with body-baring chorus boys (up to and includi ng Madonna's videos) most often used non -white (including 'Latin') dancers. Paul Robeson , the first major African-American acting star (as opposed to featured player), appeared to rso-naked or more for large sections in nearly all his films, on a scale unimaginable with white male stars. The latter might be glimpsed for a brief sho t washing or coming out of a swimming pool or the sea (at which point they instantly put on a robe ), but a star like Rudolph Valentino (in any case Latin and often cast as a non-white) or a film like Picnic (1955) stand out as exceptions, I together with two genres: the boxing fil m (not really dis cussed here) and the adventure film in a colonial setting with a star possessed of a champion or built body. -

Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) is accom- panying her friend Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) lo Piiris on a cruise across the Atlantic. While Lorelei is romantically involved with a wealthy young man, Dorothy is single—and lonely for some company. So she is only too happy to find tliiit the ship is filled with a team of handsome male athletes, bodybuilders, and gym- nasts. As Dorothy asks in an earlier scene, "The Olympic team? For me? For example, it can be given in RNA copies per milliliter of blood plasma. Determination of viral load is part of the therapy monitoring during chronic viral infections, and in immunocompromised patients such as those recovering from bone marrow or solid organ transplantation. Currently, routine testing is available for HIV-1, cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus. HIV viral load test Several different HIV viral load tests have been developed, and three are currently approved for use in the US: • Amplicor HIV-1 Monitor test (Hoffman-La Roche), better known as the PCR test • NucliSens HIV-1 QT, or NASBA (bioMerieux) • Versant/Quantiplex HIV-1 RNA, or bDNA (Chiron/Bayer) These tests have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States for use in monitoring the health of people with HIV, in conjunction with other markers. Higher numbers in the viral load tests indicate an increased risk of getting sick from opportunistic diseases. These tests are also approved for monitoring the effects of anti-HIV therapy, to track viral suppression and detect treatment failure. -

Questa tesi è pertanto consacrata allo studio della scrittura di Assia Djebar, Fatima Mernissi, Leila Ahmed e Nawal El-Saadawi e ha lo scopo di verificare l’impatto del tempo della storia, dei luoghi e delle origini sulla formazione ideologica, professionale e sulla definizione dell’identità delle scrittrici. La scelta è caduta su queste autrici in quanto sono le uniche quattro che, essendo nate nel decennio compreso fra il 1930 e il 1940, hanno in comune il periodo storico, caratterizzato dal passaggio dalla colonizzazione alla decolonizzazione, il contesto culturale e sociale, quello nord-africano e una scrittura che esprime una forte ricerca delle origini e sviluppa il tema del ritorno inteso sia come revisione della storia collettiva sia come ricostruzione della loro genealogia femminile. Pur appartenendo a stati diversi, Nawaal El-Saadawi e Leila Ahmed all’Egitto, Assia Djebar all’Algeria e Fatima Mernissi al Marocco 2 , le scrittrici sono state direttamente coinvolte dal processo di decolonizzazione dei loro paesi, hanno vissuto gli ultimi anni della dominazione straniera, hanno assistito alla nascita dei movimenti di indipendenza e di formazione delle nazioni arabe e hanno subito le conseguenze di un clima socio-culturale-politico all’insegna della contraddizione e dell’ambiguità. -

When an author is implicitly alluded to without being identified, a grey area is entered where the reader has to decide whether the context warrants a link between a vague allusion and an unidentified author (cf. n.6). 6.5.1 Similesand metaphors Tartt appears fond of employing comparisons, mainly in the form of metaphors or similes, between classical figures, usages or edifices, and characters in her novel. In such instances classical allusions are but stylistic devices in the service of the author or narrator, and not indicative of classical topoi per se. This is commensurate with her penchant for comparing her characters to authors of or characters in post-classicalliterature.2 In both instances two purposes are served: to illuminate the character who is compared to the literary original; and, incidentally, to parade the literary erudition of the speaker or narrator (and thus, implicitly, of the authorial persona). In neither case is the original (whether post-classical or classical) of any further relevance to the novel. On a number of occasions architecture or art is employed as the object of comparison in a simile or metaphor. -

PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Peplum, Neo-peplum, Géneros populares, Steve Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger. ABSTRACT Through a historical and formal analysis, this article aims to analyze the influence of the peplum , a series of adventure films produced in Mediterranean Europe between 1958 and 1964 in the contemporary Hollywood cinema, particularly in a movie cycle I will call neo- peplums because, as the European peplum , these films are distinguished by a fanciful recreation of the Ancient World and the hypertrophy of the formal work, using new technological resources in creating a highly stylized mise -en- scène.
