En el presente trabajo se lleva a cabo el estudio filológico de la primera edición impresa de la Farsalia de Lucano, preparada por Giovanni Andrea Bussi e impresa en el taller romano de Sweynheym y Pannartz en 1469 (R), con el objeto de identificar la forma textual que fija y su transmisión inmediata, en el periodo incunable. En primer lugar se contextualiza la preparación de la edición, prestando atención a los principios que G. A. Bussi expone en sus prólogos y a la polémica con Niccolò Perotti para tratar de identificar los criterios seguidos por G. A. Bussi para preparar la edición. A continuación, se describe R y se exponen los resultados de la colación interna y externa de la edición, analizando algunos de sus elementos paratextuales. La colación de las variantes que R introduce en la tradición nos permitirán conocer la labor de G. A. Bussi y trazar la transmisión durante el periodo incunable, desde un punto de vista crítico, de la princeps del texto de Lucano. The editio princeps of Lucans’ Pharsalia (Roma 1469): identification and incunable transmission of the textual (1469-1483) Abstract. This article focuses on the philological analysis of the editio princeps of Lucan’s Pharsalia, prepared by Giovanni Andrea Bussi and printed by Sweynheym y Pannartz in 1469 (R). The aim of this paper is to identify the textual form that the editio princeps establishes and its immediate transmission during the incunable period. In the first place, the preparation of the edition is contextualized, concentrating on the principles that G. A. Bussi exposes in his prologues and on the controversy with Niccolò Perotti, in order to explain the criteria followed by G. A. Bussi to prepare the edition. R is described and some of its paratextual elements are analyzed, and the results of the internal and external collation of the edition are exposed. The variants that R introduces into the Lucan tradition will allow us to know the work of G. A. Bussi as editor and to identify the textual form of the Lucan editio princeps and its persistence during the incunable period from a critical point of view. Introducción Los estudios recientes sobre las ediciones incunables de autores clásicos han arrojado luz sobre la enorme importancia de éstas en la fijación del texto y su influencia, directa o indirecta, en las ediciones impresas en el periodo incunable y postincunable, marcando la recepción de los textos clásicos en el Renacimiento3. En el caso de la tradición de la Far- salia, la editio princeps fue impresa en Roma en 1469 en el taller de Konrad Sweynheym4 y Arnold Pannartz56. A esta edición la denominaremos R a lo largo de este trabajo. Antes de 1465 Sweynheym y Pannartz habían impreso un Donatus pro puerulis en el convento de Santa Escolástica, cerca de Subiaco, a apenas 70 kilómetros de Roma. No conocemos el momento y las razones exactas por las que llegaron y se instalaron allí, aunque las principales hipótesis apuntan a que este convento benedic- tino habría facilitado a los impresores los espacios y la mano de obra requerida y una biblioteca en la que podrían encontrar las fuentes sobre las que preparar las primeras ediciones. La selección de los títulos impresos durante el periodo de actividad de Sweynheym y Pannartz en Subiaco –el citado manual para aprender latín, un volu- men con obras de Lactancio, y el De oratore de Cicerón, ambos en 1465, y en 1467 el De ciuitate Dei de S. Agustín– se adapta al ámbito benedictino y a las demandas de los potenciales compradores de los nuevos productos editoriales. En los últimos meses de 1467 Sweynheym y Pannartz se trasladaron a Roma. Pro- bablemente la principal causa del traslado fue la búsqueda de más bibliotecas en las que encontrar textos para imprimir nuevas ediciones y, sobre todo, la posibilidad de acceder a un mercado de clientes y lectores más amplio. En Roma el nombre de los impresores comenzó a figurar en los colofones de sus ediciones junto al de los Massimo7. El periodo de Subiaco habría permitido a Sweynheym y Pannartz adaptar su arte al gusto y a las demandas de un nuevo mercado, diferente del de sus regiones de origen (Gregori 1942, 47-61). Es especialmente llamativo el periodo de inactividad entre 1465 y 1467, que podría haber sido un periodo de ensayo. Para el estudio de este periodo no contamos con más fuente que los ejemplares de las ediciones impresas en Subiaco que han llegado hasta nosotros –del Donato no se ha conservado ningún ejemplar– y un testimonio tan raro como valioso: el manuscrito utilizado por Sweynheym y Pannartz en la preparación de su edición de la obra de san Agustín (Frova 2002, 87-113). Las ano- taciones manuscritas dejadas por los impresores en el mismo dan cuenta de una de sus principales preocupaciones: la elección de una tradición textual. Lat. 39 (2) 2019: 257-272 259 La colaboración de Giovanni Andrea Bussi, obispo de Aleria, con Sweynheym y Pan- nartz se inició en 1468 y se prolongó hasta 1472. A partir de este estudio trataremos de conocer en profundidad en qué consistió la labor de Bussi. La labor editorial de Bussi dio lugar a la primera polémica filológica relaciona- da con textos impresos, ampliamente estudiada. A continuación destacaremos los aspectos que pueden ayudarnos a conocer mejor cómo preparaba Bussi los textos. Niccolò Perotti dirigió una carta a Francesco Guarneri, secretario de Marco Barbo, en la que acusaba a Bussi de apropiarse de un testimonio y publicarlo anteponién- dole un epílogo de su autoría8. Perotti critica duramente a quienes preparan para la imprenta textos en los que se transmiten numerosos errores. La responsabilidad de quien preparaba un texto había crecido exponencialmente, pues una mala lectura no figuraría ya en un solo testimonio manuscrito, sino que se multiplicaría en de- cenas de ejemplares. Perotti señala de forma directa la edición de Plinio preparada por Bussi9 y apunta una serie de errores que éste ha introducido en su edición, bien porque ha enmendado lecturas que no debían ser enmendadas, bien porque no ha co- rregido lecturas que debían ser corregidas. La respuesta de Giovanni Andrea Bussi a Perotti llegó en el prefacio de las Cartas a Ático de Cicerón. En esta respuesta, Bussi alude al ingente volumen de ediciones preparadas en un corto periodo de tiempo y a la dificultad de encontrar y acceder a manuscritos para proceder a su colación. Precisamente en los prefacios de sus ediciones Bussi alude insistentemente a que su propósito es ofrecer a un público amplio un texto legible y comprensible10. Bussi muestra en los prefacios de sus ediciones que era claramente consciente de la necesidad de consultar el mayor número de testimonios posible en el momento de preparar el texto. Así, por ejemplo, para la edición de Apuleyo, se lamenta del mal estado de los códices de los que pudo disponer, reconociendo que éstos están plagados de corruptelas y errores, que son fragmentarios o ilegibles: Nam et multa latina erant, librariorum inscitia, negligentia, socordia, deprauata, et multo plura greca, propter lingue desuetudinem, corrupta, trunca, manca (h.

    N ICCOLÒ P EROTTI AND B ESSARION’ S I N C ALUMNIATOREM P LATONIS By John Monfasani Perotti’s role in revising Bessarion’s Latin for the 1469 edition has long been established. It now seems probable that Giovanni Andrea Bussi helped with Bessarion’s various Latin revisions prior to 1469 and perhaps with the Latin of the new Bk. 3 of the 1469 edition. Giovanni Gatti, OP, however, was responsible for the mass of scholastic citations in the new Bk. 3. Pe- rotti’s intervention resulted in the translations of classical Greek sources being noticeably different from Bessarion’s original translations, especially in the case of Greek poetry. Perotti completed his revision in just a few months between April and August 1469. I would like to revisit in this paper a topic I first discussed in three articles of the early 1980s.1 I argued in those articles that Niccolò Perotti was re- sponsible for the Latin of the 1469 edition of Cardinal Bessarion’s In Ca- lumniatorem Platonis. I could not produce an autograph manuscript which would have, in a sense, caught Perotti in the act of revising Bessarion’s original Latin text, but I believed I had collected persuasive circumstantial evidence. Not only had I found in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence Pe- rotti’s own copy of the 1469 In Calumniatorem which he had corrected in his own hand as if he were the author,2 but in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan I had also discovered Perotti’s autograph of his Latin revision of a corpus of Bessarion opuscules already available in Bessarion’s own ver- sion,3 achieved it would seem, in the same period that he, Perotti, revised the Latin of the In Calumniatorem as part of a large project to re-present Bessarion to the Latin West in a more polished Latin dress.

    INTRODUCTION Caesar has never been an author in search of an editor. Witness the large number of printed texts of the Commentaries. 1 With this indisputable fact in mind, one wonders if anything more can be said about the textual transmission of an ancient writer who has enjoyed such popularity. The explanation and justification for this study are simply that the basic problems confronting any editor who approaches his task systematically are still unresolved for the Civil War. A brief survey of various editions from the Renaissance to the present will supply the background needed to make this clear, and may also be of interest to those concerned with the history of scholarship. The first phase in the editing of the Civil War belongs solely to Italian incunabula. Giovanni Andrea Bussi (Joannes Andreas Aleriensis) is responsible for the editio princeps which was printed in 1469 at Rome by Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz 2 and contains the genuine as well as the spurious Wars. Born in 1417 at Vigevano, Bussi pursued a somewhat undistinguished career until 1451 when he became an acolyte to Pope Nicholas V. Hence­ forth his path lay in the service of pontiffs and cardinals, and he was named Bishop of Accia (Corsica) in 1462 by Pius II and trans­ ferred to the see of Aleria on that same island by Paul II in 1466. 3 Whether a matter of personal preference or whether he could not get away from more pressing duties, he appears never to have gone to Corsica. Moses' reputation as a powerful magician needs no comment here;' Jannes is also well known as an Egyptian wizard who resisted Moses.' The name of Lotapes by contrast has been a crux interpretum ever since the publication of Pliny's text in the fifteenth century.'     A Census of Print Runs for Fifteenth-Century Books Many historians seeking to measure the impact of the ‘printing revolution’ in fifteenth- century Europe have taken a quantitiative approach, multiplying the total of all editions by the number of copies in a typical edition. However, whereas the Incunable Short Title Catalog (ISTC) lists more than 28,000 fifteenth-century editions that are represented by surviving specimens, the number of lost editions will always remain indeterminate.1 The second factor in the equation – the typical or ‘average’ fifteenth-century print run – is just as indeterminate as the first, if not more so. Inevitably, the ‘editions × copies’ formula has produced estimates of fifteenth-century press production that range anywhere from eight million to more than twenty million pieces of reading material.2 Such irreconcilable results (in which the margin for error may be larger than the answer itself) only serve to demonstrate that any effort to arrive at a meaningful quantification of fifteenth-century press production will require a much more systematic analysis of the available data on print runs. The present study, a census of print runs for fifteenth-century books, takes a step in that direction by asking a much more basic question: what is the available data? Oct. 2021 Aurelius Victor and the Ending of Sallust’s Jugurtha Abstract: In his De Caesaribus, the historian Aurelius Victor drew a comparison between the emperor Diocletian and the Republican general and consul Marius: two ambitious individuals from humble backgrounds who had dressed in an excessively extravagant and arrogant fashion. That comparison used an allusion to what is now a fragment of Sallust (Maurenbrecher 2.62) to sharpen its point. This article shows that the conventional interpretation of the fragment (as a reference to the battle of Sucro) is unlikely and that it instead relates to Marius’ dress at his triumph over Jugurtha: it logically belongs to Sallust’s monograph, not his Histories (for which it is too early in date).

    The Eternity of the World and Renaissance Historical Thought William J. Connell In order to develop the non-providential form of narrative history that is the ancestor of modern historical writing, Italian humanists of the fifteenth century had to free their narratives from the consideration of those first things of the distant past that are explained by the Bible. Geology and evolutionary science did not yet exist to help them in this respect. However, the science of their own day—natural philosophy—may have offered suggestions that functioned in a manner not entirely dissimilar from the way eighteenth- and nineteenth-century natural science also affected thinking about the past. Medieval and Renaissance controversies over the Aristotelian doctrine of “the eternity of the world” have hitherto been treated as disputes restricted to natural philosophers and theologians. While eternalism—the proposition that the world is uncreated and has always existed—has been discussed as an ancient philosophical doctrine that surfaced from time to time in medieval universities and in Church Councils, the idea that it may have had an impact in other cultural arenas remains unexplored. Modern historians of Renaissance Aristotelianism and Averroism have tended to neglect eternalism while focusing on other, equally heretical Averroist doctrines concerning the unity of the intellect and the mortality of the soul (Schmitt 1983; Pine 1986; Wallace 1988; Mahoney 2000). Yet there is good evidence that with the revival of learning during the Renaissance in Italy it became common to discuss the possibility that the world is eternal. Among the popular Averrroist philosophers of the Renaissance, there existed a cohort of university professors who were committed to teaching eternalism in their classes in natural philosophy.

    ENRICO PEROLI Nicholas of Cusa in Italy The purpose of my Essay is to briefly reconstruct the history of Cusanus' presence in Italy, or, more precisely, the history of how his ideas were per- ceived in Italian culture of the 20th Century. My reconstruction is divided into two parts: the first part («Germanus») is dedicated to examining the image of Cusanus as it has been repeatedly supported and authoritatively spread by the Italian philosophical historiography of the Renaissance from the early decades of the twentieth century. In the second part («Philosophus antinomiarum») I will deal with the complex and difficult relationship that Italian Catholic culture has had with Cusanus; in this context, I will examine, in particular, the different interpretations of Cu- sanus' philosophical and theological thought as proposed by Italian Ne- oscholasticism. These two «steps» of my short «iter italicum» are pre- ceded by a first analysis, entitled, for the reasons I shall indicate, «labor maximum». In this section I will propose a brief interpretation of Cusan- us' thought which, from my point of view, can offer a key to interpret the historiographical account I will try to give in the second part of my Essay. I. Labor maximum 1. Homo viator With the expression «homo viator» I refer to a simple biographical fact: Cusanus spent a considerable part of his life travelling. This aspect of Cu- sanus' biography has often been investigated: We know the itineraries fol- lowed by Cusanus during his travels as a papal legate, the distance he cov- ered on horseback; Honecker has also calculated the rest periods between the different journeys that could have allowed Cusanus to write his first philosophical works1.

IL LIBER DE TEMPORIBUS SUIS DI MATTIA PALMIERI* È difficile resistere alla tentazione di identificare la storiografia del Quattrocento italiano con Leonardo Bruni e Poggio Bracciolini, Lorenzo Valla e Biondo Flavio, Pier Candido Decembrio e Bartolomeo Platina, Bartolomeo Facio e Antonio Panormita, e assimilare le memorie di storia del secolo con le loro opere. Questa è la grande storiografia del secolo del- l’umanesimo. Laudationes, biografie, res gestae si identificano in qualche caso con la storia (così a volte gli stessi umanisti teorizzavano, in altri la distinzione è molto più articolata), anche se spesso siamo coscienti di una loro rarefatta diffusione e circolazione e verifichiamo che questi testi rima- nevano nascosti nelle biblioteche dei committenti (anche se questo non esclude che alcune di esse raggiungano un’ampia diffusione), e la stessa committenza, implicita o esplicita, era uno dei loro limiti di fondo. Nascono però come opere destinate ad un ambiente limitato, spesso non superano la cerchia di amici o di avversari degli stessi autori; non valicano la corte del signore, laico o ecclesiastico. Sappiamo invece che la storiografia umanistica è articolata in una plu- ralità di tipologie e che nel Quattrocento si assiste a un fenomeno che può sembrare contraddittorio: da una parte una raffinata e precisa definizione dei generi, dall’altro un moltiplicarsi delle forme di scrittura1. * Isa Sanfilippo ha accompagnato, dall’inizio alla fine, la straordinaria impresa del Repertorium fontium historiae Medii Aevi: per questa ragione, il ricordo di un repertorio di segno tutto diverso, scritto al tramonto del medioevo.     E DITING AND T RANSLATING P LINY IN R ENAISSANCE I TALY: Agency, collaboration and visibility1 By Andrea Rizzi Abstract: The present article applies a recent approach concerning visibility and agency articulated by Mairi McLaughlin, Theo Hermans and Sharon Deane- Cox. It does so by making a case study of paratextual features of successive editions and translations of Pliny the Elder’s Natural History produced in late Quattrocento and Cinquecento Italy. The aim is to illuminate specific ways in which editors, translators or printers made themselves manifestly visible to readers, and asserted their agency by claiming different types of collaboration: synchronous (translator and printer working together on a new project), asynchronous (translator, editor or printer expressly acknowledging the work of an earlier translator or editor, whether perfunctorily or otherwise) or concealed (editors or translators availing themselves of earlier works by fellow scholars without acknowledgement). Asynchronous collaboration is an understudied aspect of Renaissance translation. This article is an attempt to fill this gap. Introduction In a 2012 essay, Anne Coldiron re-examined Lawrence Venuti’s claim that the notion of invisible translators and translation has dominated the history of British and American translation. Coldiron’s study invited scholars to study and re-evaluate marks of translators’ visibility.2 ‘Visibility’ refers to the multiple and complex ways in which translators and their editors or publishers present their work, and the value they place upon it, their aspirations, and 1 I am grateful to the anonymous reviewers for their suggestions.     CoNCETTA BIANCA NICCOLÒ CUSANO E LA SUA BIBLIOTECA: NOTE, 'NOTABILIA', GLOSSE Nella dedica a Paolo II dell'edizione di Lucii Apuleii Opera, stampata a 1 Roma da Sweynheym e Pannartz il 28 febbraio 1469 , Giovanni Andrea Bus­ si, vescovo di Aleria, tracciava un profilo di Niccolò Cusano, cardinale di San Pietro in Vincoli, di cui era stato segretario per quasi sei anni, dal 1458 alla morte di quest'ultimo nel 1464 2• Il profilo è intessuto di ricordi personali, ma, di là dall'affetto dichiarato e dal riconoscimento della funzione culturale che il Cusano ebbe nella formazione intellettuale del Bussi, ne scaturisce un giudizio lucido e ponderato: le doti morali («vitiorum omnium hostis acerri­ mus») si intrecciano con quelle intellettuali («studiosissimus», «eloquens et latinus») 3, gli interessi filosofici - di cui il Bussi, proprio negli anni in cui scoppiava violenta la polemica tra platonici ed aristolelici con la pubblicazio­ ne, tra l'altro, dell'In calumniatorem Platonis del Bessarione4, sottolineava giusta­ mente le direttive principali («philosophiae aristotelicae acerrimus disputa­ tor»)5 - si accompagnano con le preoccupazioni di riforma ecclesiale e con 1 L.
