• Last season, the Red Storm boasted one of the nation’s most high-pressure defenses. St. John’s finished second in the nation in steals per game, averaging 10.0 thefts per contest. The Johnnies also ranked among the national leaders in turnover margin, forcing their opponent into 5.7 more miscues per game than they average. • St. John’s finished 62nd in the NET and 71st in KenPom a season ago and was primed for at least an NIT bid after securing a winning record with a win over Georgetown to open the BIG EAST Tournament. • Head Coach Mike Anderson has finished .500 or better in each of his 18 seasons as a Division I head coach from 2002-03 to 2019-20. He is one of only four current Division I head coaches to boast 15 or more years of experience and no losing seasons. Gonzaga’s Mark Few, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Arizona’s Sean Miller are the others. • Julian Champagnie’s father, Ranford Champagnie, played soccer at St. John’s from 1995-98 and was an integral part of the Red Storm’s 1996 national championship squad. He also was a part of teams that won BIG EAST Championships in 1995 and 1998. Champagnie’s twin brother, Justin, plays basketball at Pittsburgh. He led the Panthers in both scoring (12.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) as a freshman in 2019-20. Champagnie attended the same Brooklyn high school, Bishop Loughlin, as legendary Red Storm point guard Mark Jackson. • Rasheem Dunn made his St. John’s debut in 2019-20 after starting his career at St. Francis Brooklyn and Cleveland State. He played two seasons for the Terriers, averaging 14.3 points over 60 games, before sitting out as a transfer at Cleveland State in 2018-19. He missed the first three games of 2019-20 before being granted a legislative relief waiver from the NCAA. Dunn was a high school teammate of Shamorie Ponds, the Red Storm’s fifth leading scorer all-time, at Brooklyn’s Thomas Jefferson High School. The pair led the Orange Wave to PSAL and New York State Federation Championships in 2016. In the PSAL title game at Madison Square Garden, Dunn scored 23 points in a 29-point rout of New York City power Abraham Lincoln and was named the game’s Co-MVP alongside Ponds. The win marked Jefferson’s first city title since 1954. • Although basketball has always been his first love, Marcellus Earlington turned more than a few heads on the gridiron in high school while playing for Don Bosco Prep. A three-star football recruit and the no. 26 prospect in the state of New Jersey for the class of 2018 according to 247 Sports, Earlington held a number of Power Five football offers before signing his letter of intent to play basketball at St. John’s. • Earlington is part of a junior class that had a tough time getting off the bench as freshmen on the Red Storm’s 2018-19 NCAA Tournament team. With the Red Storm employing a rotation that was often capped at seven or eight players, Earlington, Josh Roberts and Greg Williams did not get a sizable amount of game action until last season. Williams got the most run, averaging 8.4 minutes per game in 28 appearances, one of which was a start. Roberts played in 18 games and also made one start, averaging 6.3 minutes per showing. Earlington played the least, logging 3.9 minutes per game in 15 appearances as a reserve, but averaged 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds, highlighted by a 10-point showing against Providence during BIG EAST play. • After welcoming a pair of high school teammates in freshmen Posh Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu, St. John’s signed another pair of high school teammates to National Letters of Intent for 2021-22 in Rafael Pinzon and Drissa Traore of Long Island Lutheran, the no. 1 team in New York State a year ago. Pinzon, a four-star recruit according to ESPN, plays internationally for Puerto Rico, averaging 16.2 points during Puerto Rico’s silver medal showing at the 2019 Centrobasket U17 Championships in San Juan. The pair will be joined by O’mar Stanley of Link Year Prep in Branson, Mo. Before enrolling at Link year, Stanley was an All-State selection at Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, Kan. • TJ Cleveland has been a part of Mike Anderson’s staff since the latter’s first season as a head coach at UAB in 2002-03. Cleveland, who is Anderson’s nephew, played for Arkansas from 1998-02 during Anderson’s tenure as an assistant for Nolan Richardson and was a key part of the Razorbacks’ 2000 SEC Championship. Cleveland, a two-year team captain, appeared in three NCAA Tournaments during his playing tenure at Arkansas. • The Red Storm’s two assistant coaches, Van Macon and Steve DeMeo, both originally hail from Queens. Macon has enjoyed success as an assistant coach at programs like Hofstra, Rutgers and Saint Louis. DeMeo was a longtime assistant coach for Tim Welsh at Iona, Providence and Hofstra and has had his own successful head coaching stints at the junior college and Division II levels. • Anderson’s streak of 18 seasons without a losing record is reminiscent of a streak belonging to another St. John’s coaching great. From 1965-70 and then again from 1973-1992, Lou Carnesecca made 24 postseason appearances in 24 tries as a head coach, leading his teams to 18 NCAA Tournaments and six NITs. Four of those NCAA Tournament teams advanced to at least the Sweet 16, highlighted by the Redmen’s run to the 1985 Final Four. The Johnnies also won the 1989 NIT title under “Looie.” During that span, St. John’s also won five BIG EAST Regular Season titles and BIG EAST Tournament titles in 1983 and 1986. • The Red Storm’s newest graduate assistant will look familiar to St. John’s fans, as Thomas O’Connell will join the staff for the 2020-21 season. Last season, O’Connell came to the Red Storm as a walk-on graduate student before eventually earning a scholarship from Head Coach Mike Anderson. O’Connell had never played college basketball before last season, but arguably boasted more big game experience than anyone on the roster. O’Connell enjoyed four highly successful years of lacrosse at The University of Maryland, winning a national championship with the Terps in 2017. O’Connell, whose parents both hold undergraduate and graduate degrees from St. John’s, is the older brother of Michael O’Connell, a freshman guard on the Stanford basketball team. O’Connell’s mother, Tara, was a two-time All-BIG EAST honoree on the softball diamond at St. John’s. ST. JOHN’S RECORD WHEN... THE LAST TIME A ST.
