    1 Analyse the perception level and the causes of 2 migration in Mali. 3 4 Abstract: 5 Subsistence farmers in Sahelian Africa are highly exposed to the environmental challenges 6 associated with climate change. Temporary or Permanent emigration can offer to an 7 individual or household the opportunity to cop against these special effects. One of the 8 most important challenge to quantifying the impact of climate change on emigration in 9 Mali is lack of accurate temporal and spatial data. Emigration data must be adequately 10 detailed to take in both long distances and short distances. The objective of this research 11 was to identify the socioeconomic characteristics of migrants based on the push factors. 12 For instance, to identify the characteristics of people who migrant due to bad weather or 13 environmental challenges. From the result, the factors that significantly influenced 14 migration were sex, age and age squared, household size, labour constraint, and location. 15 Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyse the subject. 16 Key words: migration drivers, multinomial logit, rural Mali, environmental challenges. 17 INTRODUCTION 18 Even if movement is a fundamental part of human being, in fact Mali has a long history of 19 migration particularly emigration. Recently it has become an important transit place for 20 migratory flows within the Sahelian region and beyond. [email protected] ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the impact of climate change on market garden production in the extreme south of Mali through the perception and adaptation of market gardeners to climatic phenomena. The study used two models, namely the probit selection and Heckman results models and multinomial logistic regression, based on data collected from producers. A total of 194 producers were surveyed. The results of Heckman's probit model indicate that experience in agriculture and the educational level of the producers are the two main determinants of producers' perception and simultaneous adaptation to climate change. Among these variables agricultural experience is both positively and negatively correlated with perception. Keywords: Adaptation, climate change, southern Mali, Heckman probit, vegetable production 1. INTRODUCTION Climate change and its impacts have now become one of the greatest challenges for humanity, its environment and its economies (IPCC, 2013). At the global level, climate change is reflected in the rise in the average temperature of the planet, the melting of glaciers, the rise in sea level and the increase in the frequency of extreme events, the disappearance of species of animal origin, changes in rainfall patterns, etc. The average temperature in the world will increase by 1.8°C to 4°C, and in the worst case 6.4°C by the end of this century (IPCC, 2007).

    Profil de Moyens d’Existence : Mali Région de Sikasso : Cercle de Kolondièba Zone Agricole – Maïs, Coton, Fruits 20091 Contexte Ce profil décrit ici les moyens d’existence d’une population agricole qui vit et pratique les activités quotidiennes dans la bande centrale du cercle de Kolondièba de la région administrative de Sikasso (voir la carte ci-dessous). Le cercle de Kolondièba a une superficie de 9200 km² et une population totale estimée à 188 818 habitants en 2009 soit une densité de 20 habitants au Km 2. Selon les projections, cette population atteindra 216 260 habitants en 2014 2. Le cercle de Kolondièba est situé au centre de la région de Sikasso et occupe la quatrième place en termes de superficie de la région de Sikasso après Bougouni, Sikasso et Koutiala. Le cercle de Kolondièba est limité au Nord, à l’Ouest et au Sud Ouest par le cercle de Bougouni, au Sud par la République de la Côte d’Ivoire, à l’Est par le cercle de Sikasso, et au Sud -Est par le cercle de Kadiolo. Le chef lieu de cercle, Kolondièba, est situé à 240km du chef lieu de région Sikasso et à 245km de Bamako. Le climat est de type tropical. Les sols sont couverts de forêts claires à feuilles caduques accompagnées d’un tapis herbacé très vigoureux: la savane. Toute la végétation pousse sur des sols latéritiques ou légèrement sableux caractéristiques des pays tropicaux. Réputés pauvres, ces terres sont cependant Nord facile à travailler. Leur texture physique constamment labourée avec un apport hydrique suffisant donne une marge de garantie au travail agricole plus que ceux du Nord du pays.

    Profil de Moyens d’Existence : Mali Région de Sikasso: Cercle de Yorosso Zone Agricole - Mil, Sorgho, Coton 20091 Contexte Ce profil décrit une population agricole qui est essentiellement composée d’ethnies Minianka et Bobos. Cette communauté vit et pratique leurs activités quotidiennes dans la bande centrale du cercle de Yorosso qui est dans la région administrative de Sikasso (voir carte au dessous). Selon les informateurs clés, la plupart des villages de Yorosso ont été créés entre le XIIIe et le XVIIIe siècle par les Minianka et les Bobos, qui restent les deux ethnies dominantes ; les Minianka à l’Ouest et les Bobos à l’Est. D’autres groupes ethniques minoritaires sont rencontrées à savoir les Bambaras, les Soninkés les Peuhls et les Dogons venus de la région de Mopti. Ces populations ont fuit les guerres tribales dans le Mandé les dépossédant de leurs terres à la recherche d’endroits tranquilles et propices à l’agriculture qui constitue leur activité principale. Sur place, ils ont subi la colonisation au point que certaines familles ont été dans l’obligation de vendre des enfants pour payer l’impôt. Si les Minianka constituent un groupe homogène linguistiquement et culturellement, les Bobos forment deux groupes presque distincts dans le cercle : les Bobofings ou Kounakoumo et les Bobo-oulés . Ces deux ethnies constituent respectivement 65% et 27% de la population du cercle. Trois religions sont pratiquées dans la zone à Algérie savoir : l’animisme, le christianisme et l’islam. Quelques Nord pratiques rituelles animistes demeurent toujours. Chacune des religions pratique l’initiation des jeunes. D’après les projections sur le recensement démographique de 1998, la population totale du cercle est de 187 700 habitants en MALI 2009 et atteindra 214 980 habitants en 2014 2.

Its geographical situation makes it part of southern Mali in Sikasso Region. In this location, it benefits by a simple relief and a climate limited by the isohyets 1000 mm in the south and 800 mm in the north. Under this climate called north Malian Sudanese the population perform various production activities. The exploitation of natural resources caused by the practice of different activities constitutes a factor engaging the area into dynamics. Thus, our work aims at the knowledge of the pace and the extent of the natural resources dynamics on the one hand, and on the other hand at the present agrarian landscape figured and its effects on the agricultural productions. For that an exploitation of landsat images has been done. These images were of 1984; 1999 and 2006. Their treatment, classification the files conversion into shape format on ENVI software, the files transformation on MapInfo have enabled to realize maps of occupancy mode at each of the dates; The extracted information revealed enough availability of resources. As far as the exploitation of the important resource potential is concerned. The agricultural production is thought of as a priority activity.
