This article is a representation of the unconventional style of the area, as even the newspaper there was styled in a way that would be considered highly abnormal in most print news. The Grateful Dead give a free show in the Haight neighborhood in 1968. Free shows were commonplace for the Dead and other bands from the Haight did jam sessions and shows for the people of the area so they could better interact with their audience. “In the Land of the Dark the Ship of the Sun is Driven by the Grateful Dead” – This piece of artwork promoting the Grateful Dead was featured in the sixth issue of The Oracle from 1967. It shows the psychedelic and abstract nature of the band and what they represented. This poster for Country Joe and the Fish appears as many of the posters from the Haight bands did with twisting different sized lettering, bright colors, and curious images. This represents the bands psychedelic feel and nature and captures the uniqueness of their music. Poster advertising the infamous “Acid Tests” run by Ken Kesey where people would all come together and experiment with LSD. This was a key feature of the Haight-Ashbury lifestyle at the time and Jerry Garcia and his partner Mountain Girl both received their Acid Test diplomas. An image from the infamous Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway shows the band performing as one of the Hell’s Angels guards walks in front of them. This concert showcases how the counterculture of the Haight could not be translated into the rest of the world as it broke out in violence and chaos. The 1967 “Death of the Hippies” march in which local people from the Haight marched with a coffin filled with different quintessential “hippie objects” to signify the end of the counterculture movement after the media had taken hold of and ruined it. .

All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered.

    MUSIC 351: Psychedelic Rock of the 1960s Spring 2015, T 7:00–9:40 p.m., ENS-280 Instructor: Eric Smigel ([email protected]) M-235, office hours: Mondays & Tuesdays, 3:00–4:00 p.m. This is a lecture class that surveys psychedelic rock music and culture of the 1960s. Psychedelic music played an important role in the development of rock music as a predominant art form during one of the most formative decades in American history. Emerging along with the powerful counterculture of hippies in the mid-1960s, psychedelic rock reflects key elements of the “Love Generation,” including the peace movement, the sexual revolution, the pervasive use of recreational drugs (especially marijuana and LSD), and the growing awareness of Eastern philosophy. The main centers of countercultural activity—the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and the London Underground—drew a high volume of media exposure, resulting in the famous “Summer of Love” and culminating in popular music festivals in Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont. Students in this course will examine the music and lyrics of a selection of representative songs by The Grateful Dead, The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and other bands closely associated with the burgeoning psychedelic scene. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. The counterculture of San Francisco in the 1960’s worked to reMove itself from MainstreaM society by creating their own realM on the outside of “normal”. The counterculture aMong the youth in San Francisco, contrary to popular belief, was a highly disorganized MoveMent with little to no political motives. It was an oddly unified chaos fueled by the idea of trying to find oneself and dig deeper into the individual. While many other youth moveMents were focused on the ideas of coming together in society, the counterculture in Haight-Ashbury focused on the individual. The counterculture moveMent that evolved in the Haight during the 1960’s was doomed to end from the start as the ideals of dropping out of society could never fully be achieved. Once the moveMent was picked up by the main streaM media, the people of the neighborhood felt that they were in a zoo as people from all over flocked to San Francisco to witness and sometiMes even try and take part in their culture. The music and events that evolved within the Haight neighborhood becaMe one of the main outlets of expression for the hippies as it works hand in hand with the culture that they created there. The music scene and sound showcase ideals of individuality and the uniqueness of it all shows how the hippies were trying to create their own reality and separate from the mainstreaM.
