Nordic co-operation Nordic co-operation is one of the world’s most extensive forms of regional collaboration, involving Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland. Nordic co-operation has firm traditions in politics, the economy, and culture. It plays an important role in European and inter- national collaboration, and aims at creating a strong Nordic community in a strong Europe. Nordic co-operation seeks to safeguard Nordic and regional in- terests and principles in the global community. Common Nordic values help the region solidify its position as one of the world’s most innovative and competitive. Nordregio was established in 1997 by the Nordic Council of Ministers, and is built on over 40 years of collaboration. Stockholm, Sweden, 2015 Preface This publication has been produced as part of the projectForesight Analysis for Sustainable Regional Development in the Nordic Arctic, commissioned by the Nordic Working Group for Sustainable Re- gional Development in the Arctic. Foresight analysis is a method that is used in the development of local economic and social development strategies, based on a structured dialogue between relevant actors and with input from local, regional and national actors. The objective of this process is to cre- ate a foundation for action, focusing on the opportunities that become evident from the analyses. The Nordic Working Group for Sustainable Regional Development in the Arctic has defined three key questions for this foresight analysis: 1. What social and resource conditions - both natural and human-related - can be expected to have a decisive influence on regional development in the Arctic over the next ten, twenty and thirty years? 2. How will the management of these conditions affect the living standards and future prospects for the regions? 3. What are the implications of the identified challenges for future planning and regional policy? An investigation of social sustainability involves questions about attracting and/or keeping young people and women in peripheral communities. A significant part of the foresight analysis comprises a workshop series of three steps: the vision phase, the realism phase, and the implementation phase. First, in the vision phase, local workshops are organised in two selected local communities in each part of the Nordic Arctic with the participation of local inhabitants (a total of 12 workshops). Sec- ond, in the realism phase, the dialogue is raised from the community level with a workshop that also includes municipal, regional and national representatives (a total of six workshops). Finally, in the implementation phase, two transnational workshops are organised: one for the West Nordic coun- tries and one for the North Calotte region. The Working Group has been established by the Nordic Committee of Senior Officials for Regional Policy for the period 2013-2016. It comprises representatives from the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Modernisation (chairmanship), the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environ- ment, the Icelandic Regional Development Institute, the Prime Minister’s Office of the Faroe Is- lands, the Greenlandic Ministry of Industry, Labour and Trade, the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten in Sweden, and the North Calotte Council in Finland. This publication Nordic“ Arctic Youth Future Perspectives” contributes with visions from the young generation to get insight on which trends are influencing young peoples’ perception of the future and affecting their decision making in relation to their future. It is an important component of the Foresight work to understand the preferences of young people in relation to education, employment, family and settling in the Nordic Arctic regions. The case studies present a broad scale of expecta- tions and ambitions both for them as individuals and for society as a whole. As part of the project, a policy brief has also been produced to present recommendations on how politicians henceforth can work with including young people in regional planning. To live out his dream of winning the Battle of the Bands, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching the students what it means to truly rock, something happens Dewey didn’t expect... they teach him what it means to care about something other than yourself. For almost 200 years, The National Theatre has occupied a prominent position on Pennsylvania Avenue – “America’s Main Street” – and played a central role in the cultural and civic life of Washington, DC. Located a stone’s throw from the White House and having the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site as it’s “front yard,” The National Theatre is a historic, cultural presence in our Nation’s Capital and the oldest continuously operating enterprise on Pennsylvania Avenue. The non-profit National Theatre Corporation oversees the historic theatre and serves the DC community through three free outreach programs, Saturday Morning at The National, Community Stage Connections, and the High School Ticket Program.

  • Different Paths Towards Autonomy
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Sagnfræði Different paths towards autonomy: A comparison of the political status of the Faroe Islands and th Iceland in the first half of the 19 century Ritgerð til B. A.- prófs Regin Winther Poulsen Kt.: 111094-3579 Leiðbeinandi: Anna Agnarsdóttir Janúar 2018 Abstract This dissertation is a comparison of the political status of Iceland and the Faroe Islands within the Danish kingdom during the first half of the 19th century. Though they share a common history, the two dependencies took a radically different path towards autonomy during this period. Today Iceland is a republic while the Faroes still are a part of the Danish kingdom. This study examines the difference between the agendas of the two Danish dependencies in the Rigsdagen, the first Danish legislature, when it met for the first time in 1848 to discuss the first Danish constitution, the so-called Junigrundloven. In order to explain why the political agendas of the dependencies were so different, it is necessary to study in detail the years before 1848. The administration, trade and culture of the two dependencies are examined in order to provide the background for the discussion of the quite different political status Iceland and the Faroes had within the Danish kingdom. Furthermore, the debates in the Danish state assemblies regarding the re-establishment of the Alþingi in 1843 are discussed in comparison to the debates in the same assemblies regarding the re-establishment of the Løgting in 1844 and 1846. Even though the state assemblies received similar petitions from both dependencies, Alþingi was re-established in 1843, while the same did not happen with the Løgting in the Faroes.
