When I give talks about doughnut economics to groups of students or midlife executives, I'll often say, "What's the first diagram you remember learning in economics?" And it's the same the world over, supply and demand. Tristan Harris: That's Kate Raworth. She calls herself a renegade economist. A few years ago, she sat down and drew a new economics chart in the shape of a doughnut. Her chart includes the whole picture, not just of what we buy and sell, but the parts of our lives that mainstream economics often leaves out or oversimplifies. For example, here's how she looks at the story about Vietnamese farming communities. Kate Raworth: There are parts of rural Vietnam where they're famous for their rice paddy fields. And these households aren't particularly well off, and so somebody had an idea like, "Hey, let's have them come, and having home-stay tourists." You get to stay with a family, you get to be there. Great. And it did well, and it expands, and it expands. Tristan Harris: That's good, right? I mean, growth means everyone is better off. Kate Raworth: And now it's expanded to the point that those families are utterly dependent upon the income from the home-stay tourists, and actually they're not really doing the farming, so they're having to just try and maintain it so it still looks good. -

! 1 Fundamentals of Screenwriting: Assessment Two Analyse EITHER a film OR a screenplay of your choice, referring in detail to one or more of the models and/ or theories of narrative structure that you have encountered on this module. --------------------------- The Social Network in an adapted screenplay based on the book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’ By Ben Mezrich. The screenplay was written by Aaron Sorkin and tells the story of the social networking site, Facebook, and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, from the inception of the idea to Zuckerberg’s establishment as one of the youngest billionaires in recent history. It also details the other people said to be involved in Facebook’s creation including Eduardo Saverin, Zuckerberg’s best friend, and the Winklevoss twins, who claim that Zuckerberg stole the idea of Facebook from them. The Social Network is both an adaptation of book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’, by Ben Mezich, and a historical adaptation. Whilst Mezrich claims to have tried to accurately re-tell the events of the creation of Facebook, himself saying “I have tried to keep the chronology as close to exact as possible” (Mezrich, 2009), Sorkin appears to have written the screenplay for The Social Network under no such restriction, adhering more to the logic mentioned in unused dialogue of Lawrence of Arabia, “History isn’t made up of truth anyhow, so why worry”. (Chopra-Gant, 2008). This essay will analyse the screenplay of the Social Network, first through the lens of a number of classical film theories, before discussing the tendency of Sorkin’s screenplay to bend rules, particularly those of the modern screenwriting gurus. -

This attention has primarily been focused around the spread of anti-vaccine propaganda as a global resurgence of diseases have been observed by the World Health Organisation. These giants have created this problem through the use of targeted advertising, bolstering confirmation bias, aiding the creation of echo chambers and using their platforms to hijack the neural chemistry of its users. This paper will endeavour to show the real-world negative consequences that come hand-in-hand with giving people freedom of association online. Introduction The technology boom of the 21st century has brought with it the overconsumption of social media platforms, like Facebook, that lead to the creation of online communities. These communities allow communication and instantaneous information sharing. Albeit, factual or not. Platforms like Facebook give users the freedom to connect with likeminded peers and facilitate the forging of strong relationships. Searches for new leaders at brand names like The Washington Post, ABC News and the Los Angeles Times are coming at a time of rapid change in the news industry and increased attention paid to diversity in decision-making roles. The two latest openings came this week when Marty Baron, the executive editor who transformed the Post over the past eight years, and ABC News President James Goldston both said they will step down over the next two months. The Los Angeles Times is further along in its search for a successor to Executive Editor Norman Pearlstine. The Reuters news agency is looking to replace its editor-in-chief, Stephen Adler, who is retiring on April 1. HuffPost and Vox Media need leaders, too. Dean Baquet, executive edi- tor of The New York Times, is the subject of speculation, both because his job is the golden ring of journalism and he’s 64 years old. By tradition, the Jones Times’ top editor steps down before reaching 66. CNN chief Jeff Zucker, whose name was frequently invoked by former President Donald Trump during his administration’s battles with the media, is expected to announce soon whether or not he will move on. Cecilia Diaz Critical/Cultural Methods Dr. Bob Bednar 4/8//21 Research Project Draft Protests in the name of social reform have recently undergone drastic transformations in how they are founded and manifested. The ascension of social media use in the early 2000s gave rise to streamlined instant communication between people that otherwise may have never communicated organically. History has proven that we gather together in times of hardship and join forces when those hardships necessitate change and reform. The internet eliminates the practical issue of distance and facilitates the possibility of an infinite number of formed communities. In the case of protest, it facilitates the ability to organize and gather to demand social and political change. Sebastián Valenzuela suggests that one explanation for use of social networks and political protest may be online expression as a foundation for action. It is stated, “In addition to cognitive preparation, the expression of opinions can be facilitators of political protest” (Valenzuela, 2014). Research has shown that when individuals talk about political subjects publicly, they are more likely to mobilize and engage in political activities. The expression “allows people to face their ideas, make arguments, and reflect on the information obtained” (Schmitt-Beck, 2008). Platforms like Twitter and Facebook have acted as multiplexes for the expression of political views and serve as the foundation for many modern protests such as the Black Lives Matter movement, #MeToo, Arab Spring, and the Sunflower Student Movement. The protest this study will focus on is unique in that it was not founded as a politically driven protest but became one, or perhaps more accurately, was received as one as it gained popularity in mainstream media publics.
