Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless Love Careless Love is perhaps the most enduring of traditional folk songs. Of obscure origins, the song’s message is that “careless love” could care less who it hurts in the process. Although the lyrics have changed from version to version, the words usually speak of the pain and heartbreak brought on by love that can take one totally by surprise. And then things go terribly wrong. In many instances, the song’s narrator threatens to kill his or her errant lover. “Love is messy like a po-boy – leaving you drippin’ in debris.” Now, this concept of love is not the sentiment of this author, but, for some, love does not always go right. Countless artists have recorded Careless Love. Rare photo of “Buddy” Bolden Lonnie Johnson New Orleans cornetist and early jazz icon Charles Joseph “Buddy” Bolden played this song and made it one of the best known pieces in his band’s repertory in the early 1900s, and it has remained both a jazz standard and blues standard. In fact, it’s a folk, blues, country and jazz song all rolled into one. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, cut an extraordinary recording of the song in 1925. Lonnie Johnson of New Orleans recorded it in 1928. It is Pete Seeger’s favorite folk song. Careless Love has been recorded by Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Fats Domino recorded his version in 1951. Crescent City jazz clarinetist George Lewis (born Joseph Louis Francois Zenon, 1900 – 1968) played it, as did other New Orleans performers, such as Dr.

NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Jazz Fest Family Ties The 46th annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival came to a close Sunday, May 3, 2015, with attendance figures the largest since before Hurricane Katrina. The festival's producers approximated the crowds at 460,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous year. Jazz Fest even had to shut down its stages an hour early on the first Friday of the Fest (April 24) due to severe weather. Big name acts like Elton John, The Who, Jimmy Buffett, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and “The Killer,” Jerry Lee Lewis, performed this year. Saturday (May 2) had three highly popular headliners: On the Congo Square Stage was Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., aka T.I., American rapper, record producer and actor. Elton John hit the Acura Stage and former London street busker Ed Sheeran wowed the crowds from the Gentilly Stage (opening with his two hits, “I’m a Mess” and “Lego House”). Great music and sublime weather on a Saturday made for a fantastic day at the Fair Grounds. Dr. John and Davell Crawford at Jazz Fest Other crowd favorites played the Fest, too, such as Steve Winwood, the indomitable O’Jays and Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff. Local faves were on hand to please, as well, such as Irma Thomas, The Meters and Dr. John. And on Sunday, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue closed the Acura Stage to a greater audience than the year before. Shorty’s cousin, Glen David Andrews was back this year and Davell Crawford presented a wonderful tribute to Fats Domino, entitled “To Fats with Love.” Dr.

The #takeatest initiative follows the UK government’s lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions from today (July 19th), allowing music venues to fully re-open for the first time in over 16 months and is a response to the move towards ‘personal responsibility’ as the principal guidance moving forward. Music Venue Trust, in consultation with grassroots music venues around the country are launching a social media led campaign urging music fans to accept responsibility to keep themselves, their fellow gig-goers safe and the staff at music venues safe as restrictions are lifted. Using the hashtag #takeatest the messaging will be very clear: Be Kind: Be respectful. Be part of the live music community #takeatest or Artists are taking a test to protect you.
