Stites was born June 3, 1899 in north Idaho. He worked for the Pocatello Tribune, predecessor to the Idaho State Journal, from 1931 through 1950 as telegraph and sports editor, and then served as bureau manager for the Salt Lake Tribune from 1950 through 1962. Stites served as a staff writer, columnist and editor for the Idaho State Journal for ten years beginning in 1962, and was responsible for the columns “Ernestly Yours” and “Travel Topics”. He retired to part-time status in 1972. Ernie was an avid outdoorsman and ardent supporter of wildlife programs. His love of the outdoors is evident in his photography. He photographed many scenic and rugged places throughout Idaho, the American West, and Alaska. He followed Idaho State University and other local sports closely. He and his brother, Hayden Stites, were instrumental in the creation of the Bengal Gridiron Club. Stites also organized and served as the president of the Pioneer League Baseball Writers Association, and was the official scorekeeper for the Pocatello Cardinals. Ernie married Catherine “Katie” E. Buckinaw (varied spelling, Buchenau) on June 17, 1932. Mrs. Stites worked at the Idaho State Journal for many years as well, in the circulation department. Mr. Stites passed away on July 21, 1973 at the age of 74 in Pocatello, Idaho. Utah--Pictoral works Washington--Pictoral works Wildlife--Pictoral works Wyoming--Pictoral works © Idaho State University, 2017 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Ernest Stites Papers are comprised of over 1,500 photographs, slides, and negatives focusing on Idaho, the Pacific Northwest, and the Western United States, including National Forests and National Parks. The bulk of the collection pertains to the years 1950 through 1973, dealing with his writing and photography career, his 1967 trip to Alaska, and correspondence with his wife, Catherine. It also contains handwritten and typed notes on various topics for the newspaper, newspaper clippings and a scrapbook, which round out the collection. ARRANGEMENT The collection is arranged in seven (7) series: Series I, Photographs, contains images taken by Stites. The images are of historic and local buildings in Idaho and the surrounding states, scenic places throughout Idaho, the American West, including many from his trips to Alaska, and Canada. This Series is further subdivided into two (2) Subseries: the Built Environment (Subseries 1); and the Natural Environment and People. Series II, “Slides”, contains images taken by Stites during the 1950s and 1960s, on trips throughout Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Canada, with the bulk of them being from Alaska. The Series consists of 35 mm paper-mounted slides as well as 2 ¾” x 2 ¾” metal-mounted and unmounted slides. Series III contains two photograph albums, one of which pertains to images of landscapes and animals throughout the American West. The other is a photograph journal that contains writing, drawings, and photographs of a five-day trip Stites took with friends through the Sawtooth Mountains in 1962. Series IV contains the corresponding negatives to the photographs in Series I, with the exception of those that have no corresponding print. Series V contains the notes and writings of Stites including typed and handwritten notes covering a variety of topics for his newspaper columns; and, typed and handwritten notes regarding his 1967 trip to Alaska. Series VI contains correspondence (love letters) to Katie (Stites) from a man named Carl, other correspondence to and from Ernest Stites, from 1927-1967.
