Partition 438 into hundreds, tens and ones using numbers. Look at my example below to help you. In Year 2 we have learnt that we don't always have to partition numbers with hundreds together, tens together and ones together. There are other ways to partition numbers, here are some examples.

Fill in the part-whole model with numbers. Use my part-whole model on the right to draw out the dienes for this example.

Partition 274 in any way that you would like. You can draw the dienes or if you are feeling confident you can write the numbers. Task 2a: Find six ways that 524 can be partitioned, use numbers for this. If you would like to draw the dienes, you can do this on a separate piece of paper.

524 524

524 524

524 524 Session 3- To be able to show the value of a 3-digit number in more than one way (continuing from last session) Choose one of these numbers and show six ways that it can be partioned: 514, 361, 480, 209 and 57. Session 4- To compare numbers within 1000 using the <, > and = signs

The digits can be used in any order!

Did you find all of the possibilities? How do you know?

Which number is greater? How do you know? Remember! < less than > greater than = equal to Complete this number sentence by adding in the missing symbol.

Draw the dienes below!

Compare the numbers by filling in the blanks. Compare the numbers by adding the correct symbol.

Task 4a- compare two 3-digit numbers verbally using the example below to help you.

Example: 179 < 228 One hundred and seventy nine is less than two hundred and twenty eight because it has fewer hundreds. Two hundred and twenty eight is greater than one hundred and seventy nine because it has more hundreds. Two hundred and twenty eight is the greater number. 378 and 143 201 and 210 789 and 876 11 and 211 425 and 654 If you feel that your child needs support with this, you can ask them to draw out the dienes (hundreds, tens and ones) this will help them to visualise the number. Knowledge Quiz: 1. Circle the jobs that Captain had:

2. Captain James Cook became a cartorapher during the Seven Years War.

3. Captain James Cook created a new set of rules for his crew. Why?

4. Which continent was Captain Cook looking for?

5. Captain Cook was killed by Hawaiians after they kidnapped him: Amelia Earhart was an aviator who is best known for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. An aviator is someone who flies planes.

Amelia's first "flight" was when she was just seven years old. With the help of Muriel and her uncle she made a homemade roller coaster. After crashing dramatically she told her sister that it "was just like flying". When Amelia was eleven years old she saw one of the Wright Brothers first airplanes at a State Fair. The Wright brothers built the world’s first engine powered aeroplane which could fly – it only flew for 12 seconds but it did fly! Amelia however, had no interest in flying and did not think much of the plane or the Wright brothers at the time. Amelia lived in America in the 1920s. Before this, women had always needed to stay at home, look after the children and have low skilled jobs. However during the war, in the years before, women had needed to do the jobs usually done by men because the men had gone to fight. The women started to work in factories and on farms. They were doing jobs they had never been able to before.

Task: How does this compare to the jobs women can do today? Today women can... but back then women... Back then women would... but now they... Jobs women had back then were... but now women..

Task: What is special about Mount Everest? Which countries is it near? ______

______

______

______

______Everest is one of the world’s deadliest mountains. The first attempt to climb it was in 1921 by a British expedition, however they were unsuccessful.

Mount Everest is often linked with the local people who live in the valley below, known as Sherpa. They are usually farming people who grazed their animals high up in the mountains. They are excellent guides and assistants to those who wish to climb Everest. Being so high, the summit of Everest is extremely cold. Climbers do not only have to prepare for the cold, but also strong winds.

There is less oxygen in high places and so many people can get sick because of this. This sickness is called altitude sickness. It can hurt the body and the mind and it is very dangerous. What equipment do mountaineers need?

Hilary’s equipment Modern equipment

Oxygen tank

Goggles

Gloves

Warm clothing and windproof clothes

Climbing tools

Special shoes and poles called crampons which help with walking Task: Why do you think so much equipment is needed to climb Mount Everest? ______

______Why do you think Edmund Hillary’s photo in black & white? ______

______

On May 29th 1953, Edmund Hilary and his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became the first people to summit Everest.

In 1953 the British were told they were allowed to try and climb Mount Everest. The government of , where Everest is, would only allow one group to try every year and so this was a big deal. The leader of the expedition, John Hunt, asked Hillary to join in the climb. There were over 400 people on the trip. They climbed the mountain in stages, moving to a higher camp every few weeks. At each stage fewer and fewer people would continue to climb. Once they got to the final camp, there were two teams chosen to climb the last stage to the summit. One team was Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The other team was and Charles Evans. The team of Bourdillon and Evans tried first, but they failed to make it to the top. Finally Hillary and Tenzing got their chance to try for the summit. They ran into some difficulties, including a 40-foot rock wall that is today called 'Hillary's Step', but they made it to the top. They were the first to climb to the top of the world! Because the air was so thin, they only stayed at the top for a few minutes before returning to tell the world of their achievement. Task: How do you think Hilary and Norgay felt when they reached the summit of Everest? Why do you think they felt like this? ______

Session 5: Will switching off a light bulb really save the world?

Key Knowledge  Turning off lights helps to save electricity, thereby conserving energy.  Turning off lights also reduces the amount of heat released into the atmosphere.  So turning off lights actually does help save the world.  Everyone must take responsibility for their own actions.

Key Vocabulary

 A bulb is the glass or plastic fitting which lights up when connected to a source of power.

 Energy. We need energy or power to make things work.

 Conservation means looking after and reducing the amount used. Conserving energy means looking after the energy that we have by not using too much.

Knowledge Quiz 1. Which of these is not used as one of the 3Rs of recycling?

reduce recycle

2. Is all the water in the world water that we can drink?

Yes No

3. Trees make the air we breathe, they also

Provide shelter Can be made into plastic Create light Make water

E 4. Which of these is NOT a reason why people cut down trees

To make paper To build things For firewood To save energy

5. It takes more energy to…

recycle reuse build something new reduce It’s time to save the world!!

Saving the world might seem to be something that only superheroes can achieve.

But superheroes are fictional characters from stories. The person who can make a real difference and save the world is… YOU! Simply by doing this outrageously simple action: turn off the lights ALWAYS ASK AN ADULT BEFORE USING A LIGHT SWITCH!! Task

Turning off the lights is a simple way that people can help save the world.

Turning off the lights! There are lots of ways in which people are encouraged to turn off lights:

Why could turning off a light save the world?

Turning off lights helps to save electricity – therefore conserving energy. It also reduces the amount of heat released into the atmosphere. So, turning off lights does actually help to save the world.

One person alone will not make a difference – but there are lots and lots of people in the world. Even if just a small number decided to ‘turn off lights’ this would make a massive difference. HOME PROJECT: Protecting our Environment

In the last session, we looked at a ‘campaign’ to encourage people to turn off lights. If everyone does this – then we can save a lot of energy… and save the world.

Using everything you have learned in this unit, you are going to create your own poster to encourage people to... ‘Protect Our Environment’

You will need to think about everything we have done so far.

Why do we need to protect our planet?

How can we save water?

Does recycling make a difference?

Why are trees important to the environment?

Will switching off a light bulb really save the world?

Home Project - Protecting our Environment

The poster can focus on one idea that we have learnt about e.g. saving water or it can include all from the list above! You can plan it in the box below. TASK: Create a campaign poster
