Dubrovački Zemljišnik Diobe Zemlje U Stonu I Pelješcu Iz God. 1336
Josip Lučić NAJSTARIJA ZEMLJIŠNA KNJIGA U HRVATSKOJ — DUBROVAČKI ZEMLJIŠNIK DIOBE ZEMLJE U STONU I PELJEŠCU IZ GOD. 1336. Dubrovačka komuna je 1326. osvojila i zaposjela Ston i Stonski rat (Pelje šac). Nekoliko godina kasnije car Dušan je poveljom 22. I. 1333. odobrio stje canje davši joj čitav poluotok sa Stonom (i drugim zemljištem) »u baš tinu i djeci njihovoj i unučadi«. II. 1333. piše: »dasmo i darovasmo u vijeke vijekova u baštinu i plemenito ljudima dubrovačkim i našim dragim prijateljima sav Rat i Ston i Prevlaku i otoke«. -
Ragusa (Dubrovnik) and the 1590-91 Crisis1
Dubrovnik Annals 14 (2010): 71-98 71 Original paper UDC 339.564(497.5Dubrovnik)ˮ15ˮ:94 338.1(4)ˮ15ˮ PER CONSERVARE LA CITTÀ TRIBUTTARIA ET DIVOTA: RAGUSA (DUBROVNIK) AND THE 1590-91 CRISIS1 STEFANO D’ATRI ABSTRACT: Within the broader context of the 1590 grain shortage crisis, for many historians the main food crisis that had struck Mediterranean in the sixteenth century, the author focuses on the continual problem of grain supply in the Republic of Dubrovnik. The pattern of government intervention is reconstructed not only in the face of famine, but also in relation to the system of food administration taken as a whole. The aim of this article is to highlight the political genius and commercial enterprise with which Dubrovnik managed to secure its demands for cereals through a privileged relationship with the Ottoman Empire, here defined as Ragusa’s ‘corn diplomacy’. Key words: famine, corn, shortage, Rupe granary, privileges, Levant, Albania, Republic of Dubrovnik, Ottoman Empire, sixteenth century The Mediterranean society, according to Braudel, “never lived under the sign of affluence”.2 Famine, in other words, represented “normality” in a general situa- tion in which “the Western man had to adapt himself to a constant dearth of food”,3 1 I wish to thank Nenad Vekarić, Director of the Institute for Historical Sciences of Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Dubrovnik for his hospitality and Vesna Miović, who first suggested I should write this article and whose esteem and constant help throughout all these years have been—and still are—of fundamental importance for my research. -

The Closing of the Nobility and Council of Dubrovnik in the Political and Social Context of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Century
Dubrovnik Annals 23 (2019): 7-36 7 Original paper UDC: 929.7(497.5 Dubrovnik)“12/13“ DOI: 10.21857/9xn31crg8y Submitted: 10.10.2018 Accepted: 9.1.2019 THE CLOSING OF THE NOBILITY AND COUNCIL OF DUBROVNIK IN THE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL CONTEXT OF THE THIRTEENTH AND FOURTEENTH CENTURY ZDENKA JANEKOVIĆ RÖMER ABSTRACT: This article addresses the closing of the nobility and Major Council of Dubrovnik as a long-term process most clearly articulated in the course of the thirteenth and fourteenth century. Analysed are the criteria used for the definition of nobility and its closing before the actual closure of the council, while special attention has been given to the preserved lists of the Major Council membership from the mid-thirteenth and early fourteenth century, their purpose and effect. As the Venetian Serrata of the last decades of the thirteenth and first decades of the fourteenth century proved to have been a model and impetus for the closing of the Ragusan along with other Dalmatian councils, its meaning as well as different interpretations of this process are being thoroughly considered. The article compares the method and effects of the closing of the Ragusan council with those of other cities of the Eastern Adriatic. The interpretation of these processes as presented in Ragusan chronicles inaugurates the final assessment of the significance and consequences of the closing of the Major Council of Dubrovnik. Key words: Dubrovnik, commune, nobility, closing of the council, Serrata of Venice This article has already been published in Croatian under the following title: »Zatvaranje dubrovačkog plemstva i vijeća u političkom i društvenom kontekstu 13. -

The Ragusans in Venice from the Thirteenth to the Eighteenth Century

The migration of the population from the eastern coast of the Adriatic to Venice taking place over the centuries, can be viewed as a complex process caused by the political, cultural, and trade links between the two neighbour- ing regions. Most of the towns along the eastern Adriatic coast share common histori- cal features, having all once been part of the Venetian Republic. Dubrovnik, however, managed to retain its independence as a city-republic, except for the period from 1205 to 1358, with a powerful economy founded on sea-borne commerce, and a cultural and scholarly life stirred to the greatest heights among the cities on the eastern shores of the Adriatic. The article examines the impact of the government’s emergency measures on the reconstruction carried out in the urban area and on the postponed restoration of the villas in the countryside, as well as the shifts in the social perception of theft prevailing in the mentioned period. Analysis of the type of stolen construction material contributes to our knowledge of the distribution of earthquake damage on the entire Republic territory. Keywords: Dubrovnik Republic, 17th century, thefts, 1667 earthquake, damage, reconstruction, villas, construction material Introduction Dramatic events such as earthquakes, fires, epidemics and wars represent a specific challenge for every society.
