Yet scientists have recognized a set of common characteristics shared by all animals, including sponges, jellyfish, sea urchins, and humans. The kingdom Animalia is a group of multicellular Eukarya. Animal evolution began in the ocean over 600 million years ago, with tiny creatures that probably do not resemble any living organism today. Since then, animals have evolved into a highly diverse kingdom. Although over one million currently living species of animals have been identified, scientists are [1] continually discovering more species. The number of described living animal species is estimated to be about 1.4 million, and there may be as many as 6.8 million. Understanding and classifying the variety of living species helps us to better understand how to conserve and benefit from this diversity. The animal classification system characterizes animals based on their anatomy, features of embryological development, and genetic makeup.

Chapter 3 ‘It Is, Say Some, of a Ravenous Nature’: Zoomorphic Images of Cancer In Chapter 1, I described the crab as the oldest and most pervasive zoomorphic image of cancer, bound up with the disease’s etymology and diagnosis. This creature, however, was arguably the least colourful, and certainly the least frightening, of several animals which came to be associated with cancerous disease. In this chapter, I shall argue that the most extreme and culturally resonant figurations of cancer during the early modern period were to be found in the unlikely pair of the worm and the wolf. Through examining the use of these beasts as both popular and medical images, I discuss why early modern Englishmen and women came to associate these creatures with cancer, and how the cultural freight of worms and wolves shaped, and was shaped by, anxieties surrounding this disease. The relationship between human and non-human species in the early modern period has proven a productive field for literary and historical scholars of the past decade, though it remains under-explored within the medical humanities. Studies of the human/animal interface have often focussed on the anxieties generated by incomplete or fragile distinctions between (wo)man and beast, and on creatures which seemed to bridge the gap between the two.

And since all endings are difficult, many troublesome years precede. But repeatedly doctors and hospitals succeed in fooling poor old Death. Until at a given time all resistance proves in vain. For after 70 or 80 years the curves for many serious diseases and causes of death increase sharply. This is the era of the competing illnesses and causes of death: heart- en vessel disease deny the several forms of cancer their toll, and at their turn pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease try their best. Scylla and Charybdis welcome their victims. This is also the era of the replacing illnesses and causes of death: if medical shrewdness convicts a certain cause of death, many others are greedy to take its place. It seems to be the struggle with the Hydra of Lerna. Nevertheless we succeeded in expanding the life expectancy to 75 years for men and even more than 80 years for women. And expansion is still feasible to 85 till 90 years. Much was due in this respect to the suppression of infant and children’s mortality. At the start of this century one in ten new born died before the age of one and again one in ten of the survivors deceased before the age of five. And those 20% were still favourable compared to a century before, when it was double. We end with the beginning.

"The trees, animals, you, me, everything will be gone.” He carefully picked a fly from the rotting algae on his stomach, his backward-facing claws making the rescue difficult. “Farmers, miners, loggers...they’re destroying the forest,” he told her. “And we’ll all disappear with it.” Anaconda raised her head slowly and turned to face him. Her wide, almond-shaped eyes drifted open and her eyelids drooped. “You call yourself Guardian of the Forest," she hissed, "and you say you've got magic powers, but I doubt it. And anyway, any magic you might have will make no difference, no difference at all. You’re really just a weird, old giant sloth," she told him, and turned away.
