Governors hope that all children will attend the acts of collective worship and will take part in the religious education curriculum offered by the schools. This does not remove the right that parents have to request that their children be withdrawn from these activities. Reception Class - Governors will admit 30 children per year. The closing date for applications is 1 March 2010. Offer letters will be sent out to Parents on 10 May 2010 for the September 2010 and January 2011 intakes. St Marylebone Parish Church Records of Burials in the Crypt 1817-1853
Record of Bodies Interred in the Crypt of St Marylebone Parish Church 1817-1853 This list of 863 names has been collated from the merger of two paper documents held in the parish office of St Marylebone Church in July 2011. The large vaulted crypt beneath St Marylebone Church was used as place of burial from 1817, the year the church was consecrated, until it was full in 1853, when the entrance to the crypt was bricked up. The first, most comprehensive document is a handwritten list of names, addresses, date of interment, ages and vault numbers, thought to be written in the latter half of the 20th century. This was copied from an earlier, original document, which is now held by London Metropolitan Archives and copies on microfilm at London Metropolitan and Westminster Archives. The second document is a typed list from undertakers Farebrother Funeral Services who removed the coffins from the crypt in 1980 and took them for reburial at Brookwood cemetery, Woking in Surrey. This list provides information taken from details on the coffin and states the name, date of death and age. Many of the coffins were unidentifiable and marked “unknown”. On others the date of death was illegible and only the year has been recorded. Brookwood cemetery records indicate that the reburials took place on 22nd October 1982. There is now a memorial stone to mark the area. Whilst merging the documents as much information as possible from both lists has been recorded. Additional information from the Farebrother Funeral Service lists, not on the original list, including date of death has been recorded in italics under date of interment. -

Environmental Destruction in the 1991 Gulf War* by Adam Roberts Since the 1991 war between Iraq and the coalition powers there has been much interest in the question of how to limit the environ- mental damage of warfare. In addressing that question, it is necessary to look at the events of the war itself, and to draw some conclusions from that experience as well as from other experience and from more normative approaches. That there would be a high risk of environmental destruction in any war over Kuwait had been expected beforehand — not least because, in September 1990, Iraq had threatened destruction of oilfields. Thereafter, for better or for worse, many of those warning of environmental destruction described the probable damage in apoca- lyptic terms, and used it as an argument against resorting to war at all. In the months between the occupation of Kuwait in August 1990 and the outbreak of war in January 1991 there was rather less public debate about the need to observe laws of war restraints, including those in regard to the environment, if war should break out. The UN Security Council did not address laws of war issues systematically in its resolutions in this period. However, the ICRC, in its representations to governments in mid-December 1990, did refer to protection of the natural environment. Then, in the letter handed to the Iraqi foreign minister in Geneva on 9 January 1991, President Bush warned that the US would not tolerate "the use of chemical or biological weapons, support for any kind of terrorist actions, or the destruction of Kuwait's oil fields and installations". -
Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral

Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral Since London is a Solar City – with St Paul's Cathedral representing the "sun" – we should expect to find evidence of solar rays , the symbolic use of Asherim to depict the radiant, life-sustaining power of the sun. Such a feature would seem to be required by the Babylonian worldview, where Asherim are conceived as conduits of hidden power, visible portals through which the gods radiate their "beneficent" energies into the universe. The spires and towers of 46 churches are aligned with the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, creating 23 "solar rays". I was already familiar with this idea from my research into the monuments of Dublin, where church steeples and other Asherim are aligned in radial fashion around the "sun," the huge modern obelisk known as the Millennium Spire. As it happens, a total of 23 "solar rays" pass through the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, based on the alignment of churches alone . Thus, in the diagram above, two churches sit on each line. If other types of Asherim are included – such as obelisks, monoliths, columns and cemetery chapels – the number is substantially greater. If it is reproduced, the Journal of Indo-Pacific Affairs requests a courtesy line. ith a shift in the balance of power in the Far East, as well as multiple chal- Wlenges in the wider international security environment, several nations in the Indo-Pacific region have undergone significant changes in their defense pos- tures. This is particularly the case with India, which has gone from a regional, largely Pakistan-focused, perspective to one involving global influence and power projection. This has presented ramifications for all the Indian armed services, but especially the Indian Air Force (IAF). Over the last decade, the IAF has been trans- forming itself from a principally army-support instrument to a broad spectrum air force, and this prompted a radical revision of Indian aipower doctrine in 2012. It is akin to Western airpower thought, but much of the latest doctrine is indigenous and demonstrates some unique conceptual work, not least in the way maritime air- power is used to protect Indian territories in the Indian Ocean and safeguard sea lines of communication. Because of this, it is starting to have traction in Anglo- American defense circles.1 The current Indian emphases on strategic reach and con- ventional deterrence have been prompted by other events as well, not least the 1999 Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan, which demonstrated that India lacked a balanced defense apparatus. -

Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) Introduction to CAE’s MSHATF The Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) was developed by CAE in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence. Responsible for the design, construction and financing of the facility that opened in 1999, CAE operates the MSHATF under a 40-year private finance initiative (PFI) contract. CAE’s MSHATF is delivering the total spectrum of synthetic aircrew training demanded by the UK Joint Helicopter Command Support Helicopter Force. The turnkey training program includes academic classroom training and simulator training delivered by experienced instructors. The MSHATF is equipped with six full-mission simulators configured for CH-47 Chinook, AW101 Merlin and Puma helicopters. Under the terms of its PFI contract, CAE also has the ability to provide turnkey training to third-party users. This enables approved military and civil operators across the globe to take advantage of the advanced simulation, training and mission rehearsal capability at the MSHATF on a highly cost-effective basis. Other NATO nations and wider alliances also regard the MSHATF as part of their normal training regime. For example, Royal Netherlands Air Force Chinook crews routinely train alongside their Royal Air Force (RAF) counterparts before operational deployments. In addition, Royal Navy crews operating the UK Merlin and other operators of the AW101 helicopter such as the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Danish Air Force, and Portuguese Air Force use the advanced Merlin simulators for a range of training applications, including battlefield and search and rescue (SAR) roles. The MSHATF also offers Puma helicopter training where the customer base includes the RAF and several Middle Eastern customers. -

Paul Fox A Privatised Sense of the Past: Flying Officers’ Photograph Albums and the Memory of Air Operations In Egypt, 1915— 18 Paper read at the University of Greenwich Memory Symposium, 6 June 2015 Military aviation played a role in the war in the Middle East from the outset. From January 1915 until the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) and Royal Flying Corps (RFC) flew from sites along the line of the Suez Canal over the eastern Mediterranean and Ottoman controlled Sinai Peninsula, and Egypt’s Western Desert. Moreover, the Egyptian climate made it an ideal place to train pilots and observers for service on every front. This paper examines how flying officers who had served in Egypt during the Great War made use of airborne photography in their photograph albums to structure their memory of the experience. The albums compiled by flying officers, now in the archive of the RAF Museum, offer a seemingly haphazard concentration of images. Typical military subject matter comprises: infrastructure, especially aerodromes, shipping and logistic installations; operational activity, including bombing and reconnaissance; Ottoman, German and Arab enemies; and off-duty activities such as sporting events. Many albums also include touristic material, including views of archaeological sites, native types, and the ‘Arab Quarter’. Whatever their subject, the photographic prints pasted into these albums are here figured as displaced samples whose contingent origin was fundamental to their appeal to the veteran owner; every 1 Paul Fox included object functioned metonymically for what Susan Stewart describes as ‘the now-distanced experience’.1 The paper advances the view that these photograph albums originally served as condensers, crystallising personal memories of wartime experience in Egypt through a process whereby their makers ordered the material at their disposal in order to give shape to memories and thereby construct a ‘privatized sense of the past’.2 F. -
