3 Dated Artifacts, Furnishings and Memorials

1870 Charter The original 1870 Charter of the Delta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon was lost by 1894 or, most probably, before.1 A replacement charter was obtained, framed and also lost some years later.2 In 1994 The Sigma Phi fraternity (One Forest Park Lane) was exposed for wide scale thievery of artifacts from other Cornell fraternities.3 The theft was discovered by pledges of Theta Delta Chi (800 University Avenue), an off-campus fraternity not recognized by the University. More than 180 items were recovered, including the 1870 charter and a later vintage replacement charter. Dimensions: 17.50 x 11.75 inches (or, including the mounting, 19.82 x 24.25). Black & white and color images and a transcription follow.

5 1893 Cornerstone The cornerstone of the Deke House was dedicated on 18 November 1893. It is situated in the northwest corner buttress of the 13 South Avenue lodge and contains several items of memorabilia.4

1899 Clifton Beckwith Brown Memorial Fireplace The library fireplace was rebuilt as a memorial to Clifton Beckwith Brown, the only Cornellian to be killed in the Spanish American War. The cast bronze plaque measures 15 by 26 inches.

The hood of the fireplace was originally ornamented with the chapter's coat of arms. This wood carving was stolen in the nineteen-thirties and replaced with a duplicate. The duplicate was taken by vandals in 1982.5 The current arms are the third in this series. Photographic reference: ΔKE1- 067.

6 1899 Clifton Beckwith Brown Memorial Tablet The Class of 1900 commissioned a bronze tablet measuring approximately 24 inches wide by 42 inches high depicting a draped female figure holding a naked sword in one hand and resting the other on an oval shield bearing the following words: TO THE MEMORY OF CLIFTON BECKWITH BROWN WHO DIED ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE AT EL CANEY, JULY FIRST 1898

The tablet, sculpted by Bela Lyon Pratt (1867-1917), became a somewhat mobile memorial.6 Originally destined for , it was instead placed in the University Library ──now, Uris Undergraduate Library.7 On 20 October 1900, the Delta Chi chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon resolved to place roses on the tablet at the beginning of each year in Septem- ber.8 This ritual was faithfully conducted by the brotherhood for many years thereafter. The memorial remained mounted in the library until some time after World War II.9 One distinguished member of the faculty recalled that it was located in the “College of Architecture” ──presumably Sibley Hall── for a time, but this has never been verified.10 Circa 1972 the plaque was placed in the Uris vault for reasons that may have been connected with renovations to the li-

1899 Roosevelt Spruce Trees The two Norway Spruce trees (picea abies) standing on the west lawn of the Deke House were planted on 20 June 1899 by Governor Theodore Roosevelt, Alpha 1880, in memory of Brother Clifton Beckwith Brown 1900.14 On 11 February 1989, the 119th anniversary of the Delta Chi Chapter's Charter, the trees were rededicated and officially placed on the New York State Famous and Historic Trees Register.15 See ΔΧ of ΔΚΕ Special Study #04 for further details.

1901 Clifton Beckwith Brown Memorial Medal Established by John Harkness Brown in memory of his brother, this medal is awarded by the University to that member of the graduating class who has attained the highest cumulative average in architectural design over his entire course of study, but “only if the record was exceptionally distinguished.” The medal was sculpted by Olaf Martinius Brauner, Professor of Drawing and Painting.16

8 1902 Library Table Brothers Clifton Beckwith Brown 1900 and Arthur Dewitt Brooks 1900 were appointed “to draw up plans for a new library table” on 4 December 1897.17 The table, noted for its decorative lion feet, was eventually constructed after the Spanish American War that claimed Brown's life and presented to the chapter as a gift from the Senior Class.18 It measures 72 inches in length, 37 inches in width and 30 inches in height. 1902 Sigmund Meyer Lehman Window An opalescent stained glass window depicts (1) a scroll bearing the Greek letters ΔKE, (2) a green wreath and (3) two burning torches. The window was given to the House by Brother Sigmund Meyer Lehman 1879, a member of the well known New York banking family.19 See ΔΧ of ΔΚΕ Special Study #05 for further details.

1907 Alumni Memorial Stained Glass Windows The two principal windows situated in the main staircase of the 13 South Avenue lodge were crafted by Frederick Stymetz Lamb, a noted turn of the century artisan. The left side window lists the names of those brothers who died before the 1893 Deke House was erected. The right side window depicts the Delta Chi Chapter coat of arms and a scene from Book Nineteen of Homer's Iliad. William Cullen Bryant's 1870 translation of the Greek, lines #8-11, is regarded as the House standard: “Leave we the dead, my son, since it hath pleased The gods that he should fall; and now receive This sumptuous armor, forged by Vulcan's hand, Beautiful, such as no man ever wore.” See ΔΧ of ΔΚΕ Special Study #05 for further details.

CLAYTON CASKEY INGERSOLL DELTA CHI OF DELTA KAPPA EPSILON 1918 1ST LIEUTENANT 27th AERO SQUADRON AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES KILLED IN FRANCE APRIL 26th 1918

Ingersoll was killed in an aviation accident near Issoudoum in France. Brother Alton Fletcher “Monte” Baker 1916 attended his funeral on 28 April 1918 near the accident site.23 The Ingersoll family later gave a substantial sum to endow a room in the Cornell War Memorial complex in memory of their lost son.24 The bronze plaque was stolen by vandals in the spring of 1990. A subsequent criminal investigation by the Cornell University Department of Public Safety obtained no result, but the plaque was eventually recovered.25 See the following studies for further details about Ingersoll’s military service and death. 17 1936 Dorance Meyers Place 1897 Badge A Delta Kappa Epsilon badge with the following citation in (fancy printing) was framed and kept in the House chapter room (CMM, 9 Mar 1936) until some time in the mid-seventies when it was lost. I AM SENDING YOU MY FRATERNITY PIN. I HAVE BEEN PARALYZED FOR TEN YEARS AND AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING FOR MYSELF, AND I CAN'T EVEN PIN ON THE PIN. SO I'M ASKING YOU TO GIVE IT TO SOME BROTHER WHO PERHAPS CAN'T AFFORD ONE. I HOPE HIS LIFE IN THE FRATERNITY WILL BE AS HAPPY AS MINE WAS. DORANCE MEYERS PLACE '97 January Twenty-Sixth, Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-Six.

The active chapter thought that it would be appropriate to frame this pin in the Fraternity as a symbol of what ΔKE means to every brother.31

1947 World War II Memorial Painting The oil-on-canvas painting, “Initiation by Moonlight,” by Brother Charles Baskerville 1919 was presented to the Chapter on Alumni Weekend, 1947, by Brother E. Vail Stebbins 1893.32 The painting measures 30 by 36 inches and is set in a wooden frame having peripheral dimen- sions of 37 by 43 inches. The painting was restored by McClees Galleries (Haverford PA) and the original frame was rebuilt by Avondale Galleries (Swarthmore PA) in 1989. A custom frame mounting contrivance with a secret lock mechanism was constructed by Red Barn Creations (Slaterville Springs NY) in 1990. The painting now hangs in the library of the 13 South Avenue lodge. Photography is filed under ΔΚΕ1-071. An engraved brass plaque measuring 3 by 6 inches is mounted to the frame and bears the following legend.

1948 House Bar The mahogany bar in the basement of the lodge was erected by Brothers Robert Conkling Phillips, Jr. 1949, John Arthur Krieger 1949, Don Innes 1949 and William Eaton Pierce 1951.33 Furnishings from a Child's restaurant on 34th Street in Manhattan were subsequently added by Brother Kenneth Allaire LeBarre 1954 in 1951.34 The bar measures 132 inches long, 30 inches deep and 45 inches high.

1952 George Harmon Coxe III 1953 Memorial Plaque A plaque named to honor a brother who died on 27 July 1951 was commissioned by the Delta Chi chapter.35 The plaque was conceived as an award for the brother who was “most active in University publications.” The first recipient was Brother St. Clair McKelway, Jr. 1952.36 The memorial was intended to be a permanent fixture of the 13 South Avenue lodge, but has since been lost.37

1970 Burnside Pocket Billiards Table The pocket billiards table located in the lodge's basement billiards room was given to the House by Brother Frank Boyle Burnside, Jr. 1973 (AKA Michael MacLeod Burnside). It was originally installed in a secondary building on the Burnside family property in Harveys Lake PA and moved to the Deke House by Brother David Austin O’Day 1969 and others. It was subsequently renovated by Brothers Fran Reiner 1993, Adam Hayden 1995 and Eric Neumann 1996.38

19 1979 Caesar A. Grasselli Memorial Room The first floor reception room was dedicated as a memorial to Brother Caesar Augustin Grasselli, II 1922 (1901-1978) who was a singularly active member of THE DELTA CHI ASSOCIATION and a generous benefactor of the Cornell Deke House.39 An oil portrait of Brother Grasselli, measuring 25 by 30 inches, was painted by Alan Henry Dube, brother of Daniel Normand Dube 1980 in 1979. A brass plaque measuring 4 by 8.5 inches and bearing the following legend is affixed to left door of the first floor room known as the “reception room” or the “card room” at various times:

CAESAR A. GRASSELLI MEMORIAL ROOM DEDICATED NOV 3, 1979

A brass plaque measuring 3 by 7 inches and bearing the following legend is affixed to right door:

THERE FOLLOWED AFTER ME TODAY A YOUTH WHOSE FEET MUST PASS THIS WAY HE, TOO, MUST CROSS IN THE TWILIGHT DIM. GOOD FRIEND, I AM BUILDING A BRIDGE FOR HIM.

The inscription is taken somewhat carelessly from lines #3, 4, 7 and 8 of the third stanza of “The Bridge Builder” (also called, “Building The Bridge”) by Miss Will(iam) Allen Dromgoole (d. 1 September 1934). The poem appears on the Charles N. Vilas Bridge crossing the Connecticut River near Bellows Falls VT where it was presumably noted by a passing brother and copied down for eventual use in the memorial to Grasselli.40

Seal of Delta Chi The chapter procured an embossing seal to mark official documents and library books. The circular imprint there from is 1.5 inches in diameter overall circumscribing a concentric ring 1.125” in diameter. The legend, “DELTA KAPPA EPSILON FRATERNITY,” is expressed between the two circles from SSW to SSE. Within the smaller ring, from top to bottom, are three devices: (1) the date, 1844, (2) the Greek letters, Delta Chi, and (3) the date, 1870. The seal has since been lost, but many of the House Library books still carry its imprint.
