(United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) following in the tradition of such luminaries as Audrey Hepburn, Sir Peter Ustinov and Danny Kaye. In his non-paying role, Moore has travelled to the far ends of the world raising funds for the organization and at the same time promoting the causes of underprivileged children. Queen Elizabeth n awarded him a Knighthood in recognition for his services. There were twelve years of 007 and for the record his adventures as BOND were "Live and Let Die," "The Man With the Golden Gun," "The Spy Who Loved Me," "For Your Eyes Only," "Moonraker," "Octopussy," and "A View to a Kill." Under Moore's command, the Bond character evolved into a new persona that suggested to everyone concerned that it might be a good idea not to confuse the fims with "War and Peace." Moore's talent for laid back comedy was so effective that he conveyed the erroneous impression that no effort was being made. , LI"j/ 1 'j,l L.Utl i' 1'-; U'j -:L-:88b::bU4 F-JOU\.1.H I c.u I V i-HqL. U.J page ROGER MOORE - BIOGRAPHY 2 Recognizing the actor's magnetic personality, Associated Television International head David McKenzie signed Roger to a contrae! hosting specials relating to secret KGB fies. In one of the costliest and most-dangerous-to- produce documentary series ever produced, Roger gives an authenticity in revealing the most frightening secrets kept by former Soviet spies Few actors have matched the son of a Lindon policeman, who was born in Stockwell, south of the Thames. He was signed up for one school, but World War II was breaking out, so instead he evacuated to Worthing Sussex, and later to Chester, in the North of England, with his mother. Hitler's "phony war" lulled evei'ybody into a false sense of security and as nothing happened, no bombs dropped on the city, the evacuee began to drift back, including Roger and his mother, only to beat a hasty retreat to AmeTsham, BuckinghamshiTe, a few months later when the war began in earnest. At Amersham, Roger attended Dr. Challoner's Grammar School and watched the distant fires burning at night in London where his father still worked at Bow Street Police Station. Art and drawing were his best sub.iects and when he left school to find a job he was given an introduction to Publicity Picture Productions in D'Arblay Street iu the West End of London which specialized in animated Cärtoons. For 3.50 pounds a week Roger worked as a tracer and filler-in, made tea and ran errands, made cold tea and worst of all made a mistake on some celluloid. He was fired. "Being fired was the luckiest break, but it didn't feel like that at the time," he recalls. , Uj," l.ji ¿~f':IU l 1. '-. t::J ~L.:J:.:.O:.OtJ.. "Anything remotely connected with acting had not occurred to me, but 1 went along to an offce on Wardour Street, Soho, offered myself as an extra, collected a piccc of paper and made a long journey on a bus out to thc studio," he remembers. "I did this highly pleasurable job for a few days, and on the third day as 1 walked through the gates a car stopped alongsidc me. Co-director on the fim was Brian the window." Hurst asked him if Desmond Hurst, and it was his hcad that stuck out of he was interested in becoming an actor. "From that moment it seemed I always wanted to he an actor!" he said. Hurst told Roger that ifhe could get his family to support him for a while he would pay his fee to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Roger recalls, "Like a fim script, isn't it? But that is the way it happened." Roger remembers his time at R.A.D.A.
