Written by Noël Coward and directed by Phil Jordan, the production will run through October 26—just in time to get in the Halloween “spirit!” Blithe Spirit was first seen in the West End of London in 1941, creating a new long-run record for non-musical British plays of 1,997 performances. The play concerns the socialite and novelist, Charles Condomine who invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. At the séance, she inadvertently summons Charles's first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. Madame Arcati leaves after the séance, unaware that she has summoned Elvira. Only Charles can see or hear Elvira, and his second wife, Ruth, does not believe that Elvira exists until a floating vase is handed to her out of thin air. The ghostly Elvira makes continued, and increasingly desperate, efforts to disrupt Charles's current marriage. She finally sabotages his car in the hope of killing him so that he will join her in the spirit world, but it is Ruth rather than Charles who drives off and is killed. Ruth's ghost immediately comes back for revenge on Elvira, and though Charles cannot at first see Ruth, he can see that Elvira is being chased and tormented, and his house is in uproar.

During this formative period it has been very successfully led by Michael Imison as Chair and Gareth Pike as Secretary and General Manager. Michael is to retire from his role in November but will remain on the Society’s committee and stay as a director of Noel Coward Ltd., the charitable company that has responsibility for the Society. Gareth Pike who retired from his post last month will also stay with us on the committee. The Society owes a great deal to their efforts in establishing and directing its work over this period - we thank them both! The new Chair for the next year is to be Tracy Cutting who has been a member of the committee during this last year and is the representative of Warner Chappell the music publishers. Tracy’s incisive, imaginative style and dedication will bring opportunities to develop further the work of the Society. John Knowles has taken on the role of Secretary and General Manager and has a brief to develop and share the work of the Society amongst its members. He and other committee members are keen to see the establishment of new Society groups and events across the globe, regional groups in the UK and activities that involve members in the work of the Society. FAINER 2 DIRECTOR’S NOTES COMETS IN THE SKY BY CAREY PERLOFF At the beginning of my directing career, I had the good fortune to be in rehearsal with Harold Pinter, who took me aside one day and said, “If you respond so strongly to my stuff, perhaps it’s time for you to direct Noël Coward.” It has taken thirty years for me to follow his advice, but as soon as I got into the room with Coward’s forensic language and his desperate, hilarious, love-sick characters, I understood what Pinter meant. It is often assumed that Coward’s world is a kind of brittle upper-class exercise in style, but (as is the case with Pinter) the gorgeous surface of his language belies a kind of existential and chaotic despair but hailing originally from a poor and underneath. “Expert use of language is anonymous background. So everything in to me a perpetual joy,” Coward averred; his theatrical universe is invention and role- in particular, he was a master at language playing. And, indeed, opportunities for new disasters!” Boris Johnson As I write these words, parliament has just voted to hold the general election on 12th December to try to break the seemingly endless deadlock around Brexit. It seems appropriate that the programme for the Spring term has plenty of light-hearted comedy to lift our spirits. A modern take on Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster stories should transport us to a simpler time and the NT live showing of Present Laughter, starring Fleabag’s Andrew Scott, has received rave reviews. On a political theme NT will also be offering Hansard, a warts and all imagining of life in a fictional MP’s family.     S T E P H E N U N W I N Curriculum Vitae Theatre and Opera Director Writer and Teacher Stephen Unwin was born in Budapest in 1959. He read English at Cambridge University, where he studied under Margot Heinemann. He directed and de- signed fifteen student productions. These included an award-winning produc- tion of Measure for Measure that transferred to the Almeida Theatre from the 1981 Edinburgh Festival. As a result, he was awarded an Arts Council of Great Britain Trainee Director’s Bursary to worK at the Almeida for a year. Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh For much of the 1980s, Stephen was Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. All of his productions there were of new plays from Scotland, Eng- land and abroad, including Chris Hannan’s Elizabeth Gordon Quinn and The Or- phans’ Comedy, Peter Arnott’s White Rose and Elias Sawney and Peter Jukes’ Abel Barebone and Shadowing the Conqueror. Six of his productions transferred to London theatres: Michel Tremblay's Sandra/Manon (Donmar Warehouse); Mario Vargas Llosa's Kathie and the Hippopotamus and Peter Arnott's White Rose (Al- meida); John McKay's Dead Dad Dog (Royal Court Theatre Upstairs); and the British premieres of two plays by Manfred Karge: the Time Out Award-winning Man to Man (with Tilda Swinton) and The Conquest of the South Pole (with Alan Cumming), (both to the Royal Court). Actors Stephen directed at the Traverse include Simon Russell Beale, Ewen Bremner, Katrin Cartlidge, Alan Cumming, Kathryn Hunter, Tilda Swinton and Ken Stott. National Theatre In the early 1990s, Stephen was Resident Director at the National Theatre Studio, where his work included: Marivaux’ The Lottery of Love; Goethe's Torquato Tasso (Cottesloe); the anonymous A Yorkshire Tragedy (Cottesloe); Shakespeare’s Poor; Terry Heaton's Echoes of a Revolution; the British premiere of Peter HandKe's The Long Way Round (Cottesloe); and his devised show for the under-fives The Magic Carpet for the RNT Education Department (Cottesloe and Olivier).
