Uefa Champions League UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 2013/14 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS (First leg: 0-1) Fußball Arena München - Munich Tuesday 29 April 2014 FC Bayern München 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Real Madrid CF Semi-finals, Second leg Last updated 27/04/2014 23:13CET UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OFFICIAL SPONSORS Match background 2 Legend 5 1 FC Bayern München - Real Madrid CF Tuesday 29 April 2014 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich Match background FC Bayern München host Real Madrid CF in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final looking to take the penultimate step towards retaining their European crown. • Madrid, semi-final losers in each of the past three seasons, hold a 1-0 lead thanks to Karim Benzema's 19th-minute goal in the first leg and are looking to avenge their defeat at this stage by Bayern in 2011/12. Josep Guardiola, now Bayern's coach, oversaw FC Barcelona's semi-final victory over the Merengues in 2011. • While Madrid are seeking a tenth European Cup after last lifting the trophy 12 years ago, Bayern, five-time winners, are seeking to become the first side to retain the trophy since AC Milan managed the feat in 1989 and 1990 with a team featuring Carlo Ancelotti, now Madrid coach. Bayern would become the first team since Juventus (1996-98) to reach three consecutive finals should they get past Madrid. Previous meetings • Bayern's home record against Madrid is W8 D1 L0. Overall they have 11 victories to Madrid's eight from 21 encounters. • The sides have met in five European Cup semi-finals with Bayern prevailing in 1976, 1987, 2001 and 2012; Madrid's sole win came in 2000. • The clubs' 2011/12 semi-final produced a 3-3 aggregate draw, Jupp Heynckes' Bayern winning on penalties. In the first leg Mario Gomez hit a 90th-minute winner after Mesut Özil (53) had cancelled out Franck Ribéry's opening goal (17). In Madrid, José Mourinho's hosts struck twice in the first 14 minutes through Cristiano Ronaldo but Arjen Robben's penalty (27) levelled the aggregate scores and led to the concluding shoot-out where Bayern prevailed 3-1. • In that shoot-out Bastian Schweinsteiger converted the winning kick while David Alaba and Gomez were also on target. Xabi Alonso was the only successful taker for Madrid, Manuel Neuer saving from Ronaldo and Kaká while Sergio Ramos missed. Iker Casillas denied Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm. • Overall they have faced each other nine times in two-legged encounters, with five aggregate wins for Bayern and four for Madrid. The Spanish club last got the better of Bayern in the 2003/04 round of 16 when Zinédine Zidane – now Carlo Ancelotti's assistant coach – secured a 1-0 second-leg victory at the Santiago Bernabéu and 2-1 overall triumph. • Madrid had to overcome Bayern en route to their two most recent European Cup conquests, beating them by the same 3-2 aggregate score in the 2000 semi-finals and 2002 quarter-finals. Match background • Including last season's 4-0 semi-final win over Barcelona, Bayern's home record against Spanish clubs reads W15 D5 L1. The solitary defeat was a 3-2 loss to RC Deportivo La Coruña in 2002/03. • Bayern have won 20 of their last 24 UEFA Champions League home games, but only one of their last three – 3-1 against Manchester United FC in the quarter-finals. • This is Madrid's third consecutive UEFA Champions League away fixture in Germany after a 6-1 win at FC Schalke 04 in the last 16 and 2-0 quarter-final loss at Borussia Dortmund. That triumph at Schalke was only their second away to Bundesliga opponents, their record in Germany reading P27 W2 D6 L19. • Madrid have suffered five losses in their last 23 European away fixtures – four of them in Germany. • Bayern's record against Spanish opponents in two-legged ties is W9 L6, while Madrid's record against German teams is W13 L8. • Bayern have recovered from an away first-leg defeat to win the tie on nine occasions; they have suffered ten defeats, including seven in the last nine contests. • Bayern have won five of six ties after losing 1-0 away first, most recently against FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 when they won 7-0 in Munich – the biggest UEFA Champions League knockout victory. The sole defeat came in the 1989/90 European Cup semi-finals, AC Milan going down 2-1 in Munich but triumphing on away goals. • Bayern's European Cup semi-final record is ten wins and five defeats: 2012/13 FC Barcelona, won 7-0 (4-0 h, 3-0 a) 2011/12 Real Madrid CF, 3-3, won 3-1 on penalties (2-1 h, 1-2 a) 2009/10 Olympique Lyonnais, won 4-0 (1-0 h, 3-0 a) 2000/01 Real Madrid CF, won 3-1 (1-0 a, 2-1 h) 1999/00 Real Madrid CF, lost 2-3 (0-2 a, 2-1 h) 1998/99 FC Dynamo Kyiv, won 4-3 (3-3 a, 1-0 h) 2 FC Bayern München - Real Madrid CF Tuesday 29 April 2014 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit Fußball Arena München, Munich 1994/95 AFC Ajax, lost 2-5 (0-0 h, 2-5 a) 1990/91 FK Crvena zvezda, lost 3-4 (1-2 h, 2-2 a) 1989/90 AC Milan 2-2, lost on away goals (0-1 a, 2-1 h) 1986/87 Real Madrid CF, won 4-2 (4-1 h, 0-1 a) 1981/82 PFC CSKA Sofia, won 7-4 (3-4 a, 4-0 h) 1980/81 Liverpool FC, 1-1, lost on away goals (0-0 a, 1-1 h) 1975/76 Real Madrid CF, won 3-1 (1-1 a, 2-0 h) 1974/75 AS Saint-Étienne, won 2-0 (0-0 a, 2-0 h) 1973/74 Újpest FC, won 4-1 (1-1 a, 3-0 h) • For Madrid, this is a record-extending 25th European Cup semi-final and they are endeavouring to get to their 13th final. • Modelling the Financial Contribution of Soccer Players to Their Clubs
Journal of Sports Analytics 5 (2019) 23–34 23 DOI 10.3233/JSA-170235 IOS Press Modelling the financial contribution of soccer players to their clubs Olav Drivenes Sæbøa and Lars Magnus Hvattumb,∗ aDepartment of Industrial Economics and Technology Management, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway bFaculty of Logistics, Molde University College, Norway Abstract. This paper presents a framework for evaluating the financial consequences of player transfers as seen from a club’s perspective. To this end, an objective player rating model is designed based on players’ contribution towards creating a positive goals differential for their team. A regression model is then applied to predict match outcomes as a function of the players involved in a match. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is used to predict the final league standings and the financial gains obtained as a function of sporting success. The framework is illustrated on player transfers from the 2014-2015 English Premier League season. Keywords: association, football, rating, simulation, regression 1. Financial Inequality among Firms: Globalization and the Concentration of Money and Success in European Football Stefan Leggey Steffen L¨ohrz June 14, 2019 Abstract Football has an enormous following in Europe with more than 100 million fans in the big five European markets alone and numerous more across the continent. It is also in- sightful from an economics point of view. At the core, it represents a market in which all firms compete domestically and a small subset of them sells its products and services on an international market as well. Furthermore, football is characterized by workers of dif- ferent skill level, the best of which are highly mobile across countries. In the present study, we examine two features of this market. Using a novel data set, we first document the large and increasing financial inequality among European football clubs. Subsequently, we show how strongly the inequality in financial means correlates with clubs' performance and results. JEL Classification: firm inequality, football, labor mobility Keywords: F22, J44, J61, L83 y Stefan Legge, University of St.Gallen, Department of Economics, SIAW Institute, Bodanstrasse 8, CH- 9000 St.Gallen, Switzerland. According to Nielsen, more than forty percent of people 16 or older in major population centers around the world consider themselves interested or highly interested in following football.1 However, football is not only interesting for fans but also for economists.
