The Gunners have hope, however, having triumphed 2-0 at the Fußball Arena München in last season's round of 16 second leg, although they lost the tie on away goals. Previous meetings • In last season's round of 16, Bayern took the upper hand with a 3-1 first-leg win in London thanks to goals from Kroos (7), Müller (21) and Mario Mandžukić (77), Lukas Podolski (55) pulling one back against his former side. • Arsenal came close to wiping out that home defeat as Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny scored in Munich, but bowed out on away goals as Bayern progressed to the quarter-finals for the fourth time in five seasons. • The lineups on 13 March 2013 at Fußball Arena München were: Bayern: Neuer, Alaba, Dante, Van Buyten, Lahm, Luiz Gustavo, Javi Martínez, Kroos (Tymoshchuk 81), Robben, T Müller, Mandžukić (Gomez 73). Arsenal: Fabiański, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Walcott (Oxlade-Chamberlain 72), Arteta, Cazorla, Ramsey (Gervinho 72), Rosický, Giroud. • Bayern also beat Arsenal 3-2 on aggregate in the 2004/05 round of 16, winning 3-1 at home in the first leg, and beat the Gunners 1-0 in the 2000/01 second group stage. Match background • This is Bayern's sixth successive last-16 appearance; their 2011 reverse against FC Internazionale Milano, when they won 1-0 in Milan but lost 3-2 in Munich, is the sole defeat in that run. • The German champions won five of their six games in Group D to qualify in first place, losing at home to Manchester City FC on matchday six with their passage to the next stage already guaranteed. • That ended Bayern's ten-game UEFA Champions League winning run – a competition record that started following that second-leg defeat by Arsenal – and was only their third defeat in their last 24 home games in the competition with the other 21 games all ending in victory. • This is Bayern's third meeting with English opponents in 12 months; they also took on Chelsea FC in the UEFA Super Cup on 30 August in Prague, winning 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Franck Ribéry and Javi Martínez got Bayern's goals. • They have lost their last two games at home to English sides, and not won in three fixtures, drawing 1-1 with Chelsea after extra time in the 2012 UEFA Champions League final before losing on penalties. Although this was played on their own ground, it was classed as a neutral venue. • Bayern's record at home to English teams is W10 D5 L3; overall it is W16 D14 L12. • Bayern lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup with a 2-0 final triumph against Leeds United AFC in 1975, but have since lost finals to Aston Villa FC (0-1, 1982), Manchester United FC (1-2, 1999) and Chelsea (1-1, 3-4 pens, 2012). • As FC Barcelona coach, Guardiola's record against Arsenal was W2 D1 L1. His team lost 2-1 in north London in the 2010/11 round of 16 first leg but won the return 3-1. • Arsène Wenger's team, in the last 16 for the 14th successive year, have been eliminated in the round of 16 in each of the last three seasons, also losing 4-3 on aggregate to AC Milan in 2011/12. • The Gunners have won on three of their last five visits to Germany, with the other two ending in draws. The 1-0 victory at Borussia Dortmund on matchday four extended Arsenal's record away to Bundesliga sides to W5 D4 L5; overall it is W14 D5 L10. • In their other away games in group F, Arsenal beat Olympique de Marseille but lost at SSC Napoli on matchday six to finish as runners-up behind Dortmund.
