The man. The myth. The writer revealed.

MON-WED | Apr 5-7 | 8p

Atlantic Crossing American Experience: Frontline: The Virus on Masterpiece American Oz that Shook the World 1 Atlantic Crossing SERIES PREMIERE SUN Apr 4 | 9p A princess steals the heart of the president of the United States in this epic, eight-part drama series based on the World War II relationship of Franklin Roosevelt and Norwegian Crown Princess Martha. Kyle MacLachlan stars as Roosevelt with Swedish star Sofi a Helin as the beautiful Martha, who fl ees the Nazis with her three young children and lives under Roosevelt’s protection.

Hemingway A fi lm by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick MON-WED | Apr 5-7 | 8p This three-part, six-hour documentary fi lm examines the visionary work and the turbulent life of Ernest Hemingway, one America’s greatest and most infl uential writers. Interweaving his eventful biography – a life lived at the ultimately treacherous nexus of art, fame and celebrity – with carefully selected excerpts from his luminous short stories, novels, and non-fi ction, the fi lm allows us to see beyond the façade of the public man and become intimately familiar with this brilliant, ambitious, charismatic and egocentric genius.

American Oz MON Apr 19 | 9p This documentary tells the story of author L. Frank Baum and the making of his classic novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the movie it inspired and the importance of this iconic work in American life. Baum broke new ground in writing for children, rejecting the stereotypes of the era – the formal language and heavy-handed moral lessons that were common in fairy tales – in favor of a lighter, more humanistic approach where characters could be both fallible and good.

The Virus that Shook the World MON Apr 26 | 9p and TUE Apr 27 | 10p This two-part special tells the story of people around the world living through the pandemic, from lockdowns to funerals to protests. Using extensive personal video and local footage, the fi lm shows the diff ering struggles, beliefs and responses, across cultures, race, faith and privilege.

American Insurrection TUE Apr 13 | 10p Over the last three years, FRONTLINE has collaborated with ProPublica to investigate the rise of extremism in America – from the deadly Charlottesville rally in 2017, to a neo-Nazi group that has actively recruited inside the U.S. military, to the assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. This new documentary explores how far-right groups were emboldened and encouraged by former President Trump, how individuals were radicalized and brought into the political landscape, and what the fears and concerns are going forward.
